I moved this out of the Assets Needed thread since it is a nice piece of concept art. See the posts below.

Well, this is very interesting. I feel that maybe the life cycle could be more mirrored to a Kwama where as it matures it finds a Cephalopod or Dreugh corpse to burrow in and it takes on a new/different look.

Ah, that’s a lovely concept. I do think the ‘legs’ could be extended to make the creature look a bit more threatening, though. (I’m not sure whether it’s supposed to be hostile or not, but if it lives in Morrowind it’s always a safe bet to make it look more threatening).

I have an idea of how, with slight modifications, the creature (or one of the stages of its life cycle) could work quite well as a concept for lampskates:

[State] House Redoran

They moved the Skar back to Vvardenfell, dragging it overland with hooms and floating it over water, guided by lampskates.

I might elaborate on that idea later today, if I find the time.

Also, for the record, it’s encouraged to host images on an online image hosting site. I’d suggest Imgur, which allows the hosting of images without registration, and with a free registration allows for 200 images to be hosted visibly at the same time, with any images going over that number still being hosted but not visibly on Imgur. (So if you have linked to the image, the link will still work). We are looking into creating native user galleries for our members, as we’ve had bad experiences with image hosting sites changing their policies for the worse or eating images in the past. Imgur hasn’t given me any problems so far, though, at least.

Actually, you’ve piqued my interest...considering I’ve had various firefly/glowing fauna ideas I wanted to work on eventually.
Give me some descriptions/ideas you want me to work with and I’ll get cracking.

I’ll have to post some of my work once I find a solution to my photobucket account dying out on me...and from what I’ve seen of the new leadership here on Tamriel Rebuilt, you can count on more than 200 pieces from me :D

Therefore, I’m likely going to just hop on deviant art for file/image hosting.
Cheers.

I decided to try several ideas out while I was at it, so a short introduction to Lampskates:

-’lampskate’ is the name of a particular stage in an as-yet-unnamed aquatic creature’s life cycle.

-lampskates fly low over the water, often with their legs skimming (skating) over the surface of the water.

-their tail is tipped with a ‘lamp’. The lamp generally dangles in the water to attract fish, and is sharply pulled up before the fish can bite it.

-the legs at the same time shoot out to catch the fish.

-as an extra precaution, and to spear the fish once caught, the lamp is tipped with a sting.

-I decided to try giving the critter three pairs of wings instead of just the one pair, to make it look more viable as a flying creature. And because of this.

-I sort of imagine the lampskate flapping its wings very vigerously, like a hummingbird.

-I’d say these creatures would turn hostile when approached. More mature, water-bound specimens would behave the same.

Most of the other changes like the eyes were just me trying out different ideas. The eyes are the main thing I’m not sure about in your concept, and to a lesser extent the head shape.

Wow :D
Gnomey, I’m blown away at how fast you put this awesome piece together. I think the idea is actually much improved to what I had going on as a semi-aquatic/land-roaming creature, especially considering that it would give the skies over Tamriel some variety beyond the Cliff Racer.

An additional idea I was toying with was that the carapace *(head) could be collected off one of these creatures large enough to accomodate the crafting of a chitin/dreugh/bonemold-like helm or mask – could even be useful as a quest or trophy item to hunt out the largest one of these creatures down.

Let me know if there is anything you want me to work with on designs for this guy...otherwise, I think your piece is perfect.
