Gol Mok (Village)

Post by Yeti »

This thread is for discussing the identity of the shack village Gol Mok that rests in the Thirr River Vally Delta. In the previous naming thread, I had this to say:
Yeti wrote:I'm in favor of keeping Gol Mok as an impoverished shack village similar to to Gnaar Mok and Hla Oad, except not in the swamp. Perhaps it's origin could lie in peasant farmers being pushed off their lands on the west bank of the Thirr by expanding Hlaalu plantations. Now they're mostly fishermen. Add in a little Camonna Tong presence (perhaps a hideout for the group's losers who are too lame for Andothren), along with a little smuggling traffic between the Inner Sea and Thirr River Valley, and I think we have a good concept for the place.

The shack village has been mentioned in three threads: 1, 2 and 3.

I'm fine with leaving the shack village in its current location, in which case it should be adjusted to fit the new coastline. At the same time, as somewhat discussed in the third link, the Andothren-Thirr section currently has a few almost-settlements, especially as far as travel services go, so I also think consolidating some of them in some way could have its merits. The main question is whether we like that location for the shack village. It's pretty easy to move it.

Is everyone fine with where this village is located?

Does anyone have any comments concerning the description of the village I posted above?

I'm fine with the description. If, as I have seen suggested, the villagers are largely of Indoril stock, the strained relations between the villagers and the owner of the manor in Gol Mok might be an interesting theme for the settlement.

Hey, I've contributed a shanty town name to TR. :D

Is there a map showing where Gol Mok sits in relation to Vvardenfell? I'm just curious because if there were to be a Tong presence here, perhaps they could be working in tandem with the Hla Oad group to smuggle goods into Vvardenfell.

It's not the best map for the situation, but this one is the most accurate map I could find with a quick skim that shows a lot of Vvardenfell:

Given the sort of triumvirate of Teyn, Seyda Neen and Ebonheart, I think a direct water connection of the smuggling ring is very unlikely. It would require rather extensive corruption, incompetence or some combination of the two on the part of the Imperial coastguard. The proximity of Old Ebonheart also makes things rather sticky.

On the other hand, that situation could make for more nuanced and intriguing smuggling routes. Perhaps the smuggled goods are sent north down the river Thirr, circumnavigating Almas Thirr via Indal-ruhn, and then creeping between the islands at the mouth of the Thirr where they stop at Gol Mok (still shackville on that map). From there they go overland to Andothren, and then? Maybe at some point in the river that flows past Bodrem the goods are transferred back to ships? Or would the Redoran actually have covert Camonna Tong presence? Maybe Teyn is incredibly corrupt, and the goods go through there?

Really, a direct over-sea route from Gol Mok to Suran would seem more sensible, but the Inner Sea is fairly broad and open there, so perhaps smuggler ships have a harder time keeping hidden. (While I know this is backwards thinking, such a route would also largely invalidate the role of Andothren and the Bittercoast in smuggling, which is hardly ideal).

The role smuggling routes played and play in Hlaalu's expansionism might be an interesting topic to discuss, but I don't think we really have all the information we need yet and this is naturally not the best thread to discuss it in at length.

That's a very useful map. Might I see the full map, if there is one?

I agree that I don't think Gol Mok would be the best tie-in for smuggling operations. Unless there are geographic barriers, which I don't see, it lies among a lot of Imperial holdings.

Maybe there is another town up the coast which could be used.

Andothren is going to have a lot of smuggling. I agree that this village might not be the best location for it.

That is the full map, unfortunately. I mocked it up myself, and as far as I know there is currently no larger map that reflects the changes I have made to the coast around Andothren. I should add that the southernmost part of the map is a complete approximation.

I'm guessing this map from this thread is the most up-to-date map that shows all of Morrowind posted on this forum, though I am probably wrong. Unfortunately the settlements aren't labelled in that map.

I do think that Gol Mok makes for a good final stop for goods transported along the River Thirr. (Or probably smuggler caves near Gol Mok). The goods could also be transported overland through the plantations in the Thirr River Valley, of course.

As for other towns, I am pretty certain that my map shows all of the Hlaalu settlements within the confines of the map, and certainly along the Inner Sea. But come to think of it, rather than going through towns, goods bound for the Vvardenfell are probably shipped out from coastal smuggler caves. (Which may need to be added, but there's a general lack of dungeons in the area anyway so that shouldn't be a problem).

Well you did a good job on that map, I found it very useful. It'd be helpful to have a fully labelled map of TR's Morrowind.

Whenever someone posts up a map on TR I usually save to my computer for easy access. These are two I think you'll find helpful.

This map doesn't show everything in detail, but it does show the whole province. It's a bit out of date (Gah Ruhn has been renamed to Othrensis and the Hlaalu settlement deep in Redoran territory has been made Imperial). The red lines showed the five Imperial districts on the main land. The colours showed the territory of each Great House + the Temple + the Empire.

This map shows most of the major settlements (and Bal Oyra). It also shows the rough division of releases. The red lines show the old Map 1, Map 2 etc. The yellow rings were settlements with a Thieves Guild presence, which was what the map was originally discussing.

Both of the maps TDF linked are absolutely heartbreaking for me, since they do not include Hlersis. :(

Those are quite helpful, TDF. Thanks!

Though they won't help much when discussing something as small as Gol Mok, unless I have another map, like what Gnomey gave to give me a frame of reference. :D
