Just a thought:

If a bug in a new TR release occurs under OpenMW, it ought to be confirmed under regular Morrowind.exe before it gets posted as a bug here, since OpenMW handles stuff a little differently –– and bugs only occurring under OpenMW ought to be posted at the OpenMW site, not at Tamriel Rebuilt.  TR is, actually, not developing for OpenMW, but for Morrowind, and it is OpenMW’s task to be fully compatible to the original engine.

While it’s definitely helpful to recieve comprehensively-detailed bug reports in general, we do have to take what we can get in some regards. Not everyone has an active installation of vanilla MW to test on, so if it’s down to someone with issues posting about them or keeping quiet I’d rather have the issues noted even if they turn out to not really be our problem; issues unique to OpenMW can still point to a technical difference between something we’ve implemented and how the implementation was performed in the original game.

Something that would be nice is to have a dropdown in the bug tracker for indicating if the reporter found the bug in vanilla or OpenMW (or just a blurb encouraging reporters to specify what engine they’re running the game in).

Hmm… how can you not have a vanilla MW installation when you’re using OpenMW, since you need all the files from vanilla MW to run OpenMW?  AFAIK, OpenMW does not run with Skywind or Morroblivion files…

EDIT: I really forgot to state the important message:
Even if somebody does have only OpenMW.exe and for some strange reason not Morrowind.exe after installing OpenMW and its game file dependancies, the right way to hint towards a potential bug would be „I came across <this and that> in OpenMW, can somebody confirm/deny this in regular Morrowind?”

…or do I see this wrong?

People using mac or linux would not necessarily be able to run vanilla Morrowind even if they have it ‘installed’.

Also, because save files don’t transfer easily between vanilla and OpenMW, players might have a hard time replicating the conditions which triggered the bug.

And for your second point, yeah that seems like a good idea. I think that’s what Sirrah was getting at in his post as well.

Yes, there is a point.  Although one could counter:
mac or linux: …unless they have Wine installed, which is in every distro, and on Mac you could use Bootcamp or crossoverWindows.  I’m running on Linux, for example (although I admit that I had a regular MW install before I toyed around with OpenMW).
save files: see the quick’n’dirty approach I hinted at in http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/forum/stuck-telvannis-council-chamber, there is no save file necessary, just a handful of console commands from a virgin game with TR loaded.  Works even with quest related stuff (see the UESP wiki for console commands, if you don’t already know them).

And yes, sirrah and me were at the same line there, but I wanted to name a method really clearly once.  It would greatly simplify the efforts for all people which get involved in a bug report if the circumstances (engine, in this case) are stated clearly.

Regards, sirrah and fufufu (nice name, by the way ;-)

We can just add in another checkbox for if you’re using OpenMW or not in the bugtracker. Then if someone is using OpenMW it gets recorded in the bug.

Does: concepts, textures, youtube vids, admin stuff e.g. PR, handbook, assets, small website things. Activity level: wildly unpredictable. Still active. Find me on Discord.

That’d be really good.  There ought to be topic-related categories, too.  For now, prefixing new bugtracker entries would suffice, eg. as in „OpenMW: stuck in Port Telvannis’ Council Chamber”.
