Okay, now my crazy physics teacher has given us a project that's almost worse than that mouse trap car thing that I had last fall.
I must design an eggdrop experiment. The catch?:
I may only use 3 sheets of 8.5 X 11 paper (standard typing paper), 2 ft of tape (not sure what kind... he will tell us tomorrow), and 3 ft. of string (no yarn). Also, I may not make these things into a parachute of any kind. And this also excluded the traditional "box" that most contests of this kind use.
So, yeah, I must drop an egg using only those things as protection. Anyone have any ideas? I am totally clueless as to how I am gonna get this crap to protect my eggy .
This seems pretty impossible, although i would suggest cutting the paper into strips, and rolling it into tight tubes. Attach them to the egg with the tape so it represents pinhead or some shit like that. Then use the string to strangle your teacher.
What worked well for me was crumpling up one sheet of paper, then uncrumpling it slightly to form a kind of bowl-shape, then add a foot of yarn packed into a small area, add another sheet of paper crumpled up, into a drinking glass shape. Set it inside the bowl-object on top of the string, then set the egg in, and fold the paper over it and tuck it in. Then add string on top of that and to the side a little, and then crumple up the third sheet of paper. Uncrumple it(don't flatten it or press it, just uncrumple it), and put it around the big mass of an object you now have, and then make sure it covers the whole object. Then take your tape in 2 and a half inch increments and tape over 1 or 2 areas to keep it all together, and then use the rest of it(in 2&1/2 increments) all on one side(of the sphere, not one big lump on the bottom. Then when you drop it. Drop it so that the taped half hits the ground.

Or you could just bring a hard-boiled egg to the class and switch them out when no one's looking.

i have an idea
(well i think i do..)
bend one peice of paper into an upside down "U" shape
then cut the other 2 pieces of paper in half.
then place these pieces of paper at an angle to the u shape around all 4 sides of it.Some extensive cutting will have to be done but hey.
ok so the theory is that the "U" shaped paper will work as a sorta trampoline to cushion most of the eggs fall.The it will hit one of the 4 pieces of paper and roll down them onto the floor.(so the 4 pieces of paper will just basically act to suround the trampoline paper)(like ramps)

I'd have tried about the same thing as haplo suggested. Protect the egg against the impact by wrapping it into the crumpled paper seems to be a simple, but effective solution...
if i remember well one time my teacher say if the proctection is stick to the egg (dont know if you understand) this will make the shok absorbed by the protection but it need to be a hard protection(dont know if this can help)
ok, attach the string to the smaller part of the egg, with a small piece of tape, roll up the paper,and tape one piece to the bottom, then do yourbest to make a ring around theegg, like a dwemmer mace

even better would beto take the pannunder the counter, beat your teacher intosubmission, and use a bunsen burner to make scrambled eggs, mmm... i think i'm gonna go makesome scrambled aggs now
Or . . . if you're actually going to try at creating the real thing . . .
You could make a cone out of one sheet of paper with strings running across the middle, creating a harness for the egg. The other two pieces of paper could be attached to the sides and create something of a bubble by bending the paper such that one side connected to the cone and one side is parallel to level ground. You could also wrap string across this portion to make it land and hopefully not fall over. Tape could be used to attach the paper and strings and strengthen the edges.

ok, make the cones outta the 3 sheets of paper. all three into one cone. as long as you can make it, and as stiff as you can make it. you want a long.. hard... nevermind. anyway, with your newly aquired implement of minimal destruction, tape it to the narrow part of the egg. then tape the string cut into a bunch of strips (think furby with dreadlocks) to the top, so you have a spike on the bottem and the strings on top. what you have here is an egg in a paper spike with a funny haircut, err i mean, a cushing device, and "streamer" drag mechinezims. So the string creates drag and slows it down a bit, and the cone absorbs shock... good luck
