Pope John Paul II thread.
Just a few minutes ago (1:00 pm, American Central time), Pope John Paul the 2nd died. I think that it is only appropriate that we have a thread about him here. Even non-Catholics, such as myself, had great respect for this man. If you wish to post something, please do, but treat this as a 'memorial' thread, not a debate of any manner.
John Paul II was 84, and the first non-Italian Pontif in 450 years. He was also the first Polish Pope ever. He was the most well-travelled and most linguistically skillful Pope in history. He was one of this centuries greatest pacifists, encouraging peace where it was at all possible, being the Catholic equivelant to Muhtme Ghandi. He was the first pope to set foot in a Jewish Synagogue since St. Simon Peter around 2000 years ago. Only really good things can really be said of this man. He corrected the scandels of the Church, he helped in the downfall of the U.S.S.R., he offered peace where others offered war, and made a point that though capitalism was important to the modern world, we should live for a higher purpose than just money. He maintained the traditions of the church, all the while, making ammends to Muslims and Jews for the past crimes commited upon them by Christians. He was truly a good man, by whatever standard, and was truly a good Christian, following the Bible to the dot of every i. May he truly rest in peace, and may we remember him and what good he did in the world. But let us also remember that his death should be neither cause for mourning nor sadness, for he walked this earth 84 years, surviving World War 2, and doing good all of those years, and he will be remembered, by both the faithful and the secular world. Amen (or The End for the secular).
Does anyone else wish to say anything?

Stendarr is the God of Mercy and Justice. Therefore, he must also be the bearer of Duck Tape, for only Mercy and Justice can use Duck Tape for the Good of man.

Someone else was watching this? I don't know really what to say. I've been watching for the last half hour.
Edit: I found something to say... Poor Popy.

I disagreed with many of his policies (most notably the one Stumpy mentions) but he did do a lot of good things in the world, and broguht many necessary changes to the Catholic church. While I may be an athiest, he represented much of what is good about religion and if someone can name a better (or more influential, for that matter) Pontiff in the last 1000 years I'd like to know who it was.
He will be sorely missed.

I meant Peter. He wasn't necissarily a pope, but he was the first leader of the Church.
Please Stumpy, try to make this flame free, and let us please stay on topic for this thread. If you wish to post something, please do, but treat this as a 'memorial' thread, not a debate of any manner.

I thought he was a good guy, with the exception of a couple stances he took on certain things.
By saying abstinence is the only supported thing of the church, he proliferated the ignorance of sexually transmitted diseases. Much like reagan he has now doomed an entire continent to a raging pandemic.
He did however have compassion for all people, and believed that all were welcomed in the kingdom of god, and for that I have respect.

The College of Cardinals will hold its preliminary hearings tommorrow (I'm ashamed I don't remember the proper name, this is the NEglish. As to a successor I do not believe there is currently a strong favorite. Time will tell who the winner is, certainly no one would have predicted that Karol Wojtyla would have been elected 26 years ago, but he was.
@Artemis - There have been 260 or so Popes, IIRC. John Paul II was the first non-Italian in 450 years, and while the Italians were disappointed in his selection, time and experience have largely reversed that verdict.

Pope John Paul II was certainly a charismatic leader, the effect the past day has had on Non-Catholics confirms that. He certainly had some good effects on the world in general, and the Catholic faith in particular during his term.
However, I'd have to agree with some of the other posters here, he did make some mistakes, especially concerning:
- Contraception
- Homosexuality
- Female Priests
Time will tell what will be our final view on the man. God bless his soul.

Ok, im not religious but Ill feel bad if I dont say something in this thread.
I'm sure the pope will rest in peace.
I wonder who the next pope will be? Well, It probably wont matter much to me anyhoo but still. Apparantly there was once an imposter woman pope and so now, they have a test where the perspective pope sits naked in a chair with a hole in the seat to make sure he is really a man. wierd eh?
anyway. Yes. Ive said something now. RIP Pope

Are you sure that's just not a rumor? I've never heard of anything like that.Massalinie wrote:Apparantly there was once an imposter woman pope and so now, they have a test where the perspective pope sits naked in a chair with a hole in the seat to make sure he is really a man. wierd eh?

Yeh im sure, i know the whole story. Its true. The womans name i have forgotten but she dressed as a man (cant remember why) and became the pope (not entirely intentionally) and she had a lover who knew she was a woman, she got pregnant and gave birth in the middle of an impotant event and the killed her on the spot. and now they check everytime

It's true. My History Teacher (PHD) can tell me. I'll report back with it tommorow unless someone else posts it correctly.

According to most versions, as the pope was mounting a horse, she went into labor and gave birth to a son. Moments later, some reports said, the crowd tied her feet to the horse's tail, then stoned her to death as she was dragged along a street.
But other versions showed her banished to a convent and living in penance as her son rose to become a bishop, I'm not sure which one to believe myself.

You shouldn't write about the Pope because you most of you don't know what he did for the world. You only write that bad thing happened but all write this, because this is public opinion. TV say that good man died but for most people(especially when they are not from Europe) John Paul II was like the other pope, but he was different, but people do not understand that.
Don't write if you really know WHO died.

Nope, not really. I just read some dutch internet polls and they say only 19% of the ppl are touched by the pope's passing, the other 81% don't really care I think. He isn't so popular over here because he's conservative. Ah well... the next pope'll be conservative, gives us more to complain about.
Not meaning this disrespectfully in any way.
