Total Conversions

Post by Macar »

Has anyone out there played a really good TC? All the ones I've tried have been pretty half baked. Except TR, of course

No, they've all been pretty craptastic. Swords of Preithria was cool the first time, being as I had never played a TC before, and had a much lower standard in mod quality. However, looking back, the mod is pretty bad. There is no way you could beat it without the strategy guide, and it is entirely too linear. Plus, most of the cities are cut and paste jobs.
Then there is the infamous Morrowland, which was so bad that if there is a Christian god, he will damn the two brothers that made it to Hell for creating such a piece of crap to represent him.

The only mod I would ever recommend was Suran Underground. Not a TC, but absolutely huge with a brilliant plot that had you run all over Vvardenfell for a crazy old ******* with a penchant for *****. I don't want to spoil it for you. Just play it. :)

Morrowland *gags* , the absolute WORST mod I have ever played. Not only was the creater a self-rightious jerk, but the mod sucked as well. The only DECENT thing in the mod was the scripting.

:( Sorry, I meant to put it there. I goofed. It was 2:00am. You can subtract 1 net IQ point per minute after midnight for me, so I by then I had IQ of a small invertibrate sea slug.

Do you mean 1 point per minute after midnight?

Well in that case, all total conversions suck, because TR is an addition not a TC.

SOP was craptastic. That guys sense of what he called "humor" was less mature than a 12 year olds. worst npcs and dialogue ever.

Thats the only TC I tried. I haven't really played sea of destiny(with quests version) or Wizards Islands. I started WI, but reverted to a backup save without it activated, not because of any quality reasons, its just the scripting murdered my framerate too much, and the scripted music going to 100% volume was driving me mad.

Sea of Destiny isn't really a TC, since you can go back and forth freely, but it is pretty bad. The towns are fairly well-done, especially the Hlaalu-style city, but that is about it. Dialogue sucked, plot was linear and anticlimactic, and the "good" god looked exactly like Vivec. The "evil" god was some duschebag NPC running around in Jeremy's Arkay armor. Lame.

Morrowland *gag* never heard of it before, but what a name. It's my dream to make a TC someday (not by myself). I might think about it when oblivion comes out. Of course, I'll have to buy it first. which will, of course, require buying a new computer. And once I have it I will want play the orignal untill I am fully satified. And after that, I'll have to spend some time learning the new CS.

So, basicly, in about 10 years I think I'll take a crack at it.

I love WI, at one point being a Team Member for it. But yes, the scripted music is really irritating. According to the read-me, they only want you to play the game with the original themes and their music. I know the guy who's idea this was, and he composed the majority of it. He's not a very nice guy.

I have started to many huge mod projects to begin with, which is my problem. I think I'm gonna spend the rest of Morrowind's days contributing to the bigger projects out there.

The only good Total Conversions for any game I know of are not for Morrowind, but for Dungeon Siege: "MageWorld" and "Lands of Hyperborea", both created by Jim Farris, alias Xaa. But those are rare exceptions and Farris is a professional writer which gives the stories of those games a higher quality than in most professionally made games. Also the game-play, especially in MageWorld, was improved much in comparision to the original Dungeon Siege. Lands of Hyperborea is a good RPG (still a little action-oriented), but MageWorld is almost a piece of art and a very difficult, very time-consuming RPG.

Anyway, a person who loves older RPGs like Baldur's Gate or other 2D-RPGs will love MageWorld, which is in fact an Old-Style-RPG with 3D-Graphics. With this I mean it got hundreds of Gameplay-hours (it takes about a month to complete the game), a good story, deep characters and a high-quality skill-system (crafting skills play a major role in the game, for the more advanced weapons and armors are only available, if you create them yourselfs).

Oh, and did I mention that Jim Farris created those TCs all by himself with no help at all?

I bet MEM would have been pretty awesome. That is a shame, and I only heard about it after it was called off.

What about that Tower of .....? While their cities seem large, I really wasn't impressed with the intro. But I dunno, the light in it was bothering me. And the Suran Underworld mod is awesome, and although it doesn't quite fit with lore (ok, you got me, it blatantly smashes it through a wall) is the Private Mobile Base, and its armies of Dwemer Cyborgs (another lore issue.)
