This is just an opening idea. I don't know if this is even a relevant suggestion but I was thinking there should be like a cross-country marathon race across the continent of Tamriel. Following a set course that liks from town to town. But occasionally sidetracks into some rugged or even dangerous territory.
Of course no forms of teleportation or long distance travel will be allowed. Just straight forward foot momentum. Oh yes and no magical enhacements that would aide in overcoming difficult terrain. (ie. water walking, levitation, swift swim, water breathing, increased acrobatics)
This will truly put your navigation and athletic skills to the test. And of course reaching the finish line in a set amount of time will constitute
Tamriel Endurance Marathon!

Not a bad idea, but I'm afraid we can't make it happen. Here is why:
Unfortunatly for us, the AI of the NPCs is absolutely horrible. I am sure you have done quests where you need to escort an NPC from one place to another. You must have experienced the frustrating stupidity of their AI. They get caught behind rocks and run in place, randomly decide to take turns, get stuck in corners, and generally behave like idiots.
Now, can you imagine trying to script a race across all of Tamriel? It would be a nightmare. Also, there is the pretty substantial problem that we aren't even done with Morrowind yet, let alone all of Tamriel.
Since you are unfamiliar with the way TES3 scripting works, the best way to guess at the playability of your quest would be to go by the quests in the original game. You want to try and work off of what those quests gave you.
Good luck, and don't get discouraged

If it could be done it would be really cool, although all of Tamriel at the moment seems a pipe dream. I have real concern for the NPC's pathfinding abilities. They can't navigate an interior, nonetheless a continent.
'What if man is not really a scoundrel - man in general, I mean, the whole race of mankind - then all the rest is prejudice, simply artificial terrors and there are no barriers and it's all as it should be.'
This is the kind of idea that would be awesome, but at the moment is so far in the future that discussing it now isn't at all benificial.
I personally think that a running trek across Morrowind alone would be insanely cool. Like from Tel Ouada to Naryaebal or from Gargon Huul to Tear.

like I said this suggestion may not even be a relevant one. but I still like this idea.
What I was thinking is that there really wouldn't be an actual live competition running alongside your character or even at all for that matter. Just run the course of the path in the most timely manner as possible.
Just set a goal time and try to reach it. And I do know that of course we are no where near the completion of the entire continent of Tamriel so maybe we could consider this on a much smaller scale for now.

If this could or would ever be done, there would need to script something in to prevent the player from using mark/reacall so they don't finish the race in a couple of seconds. A cool reward could be a choice of a teleportation power to a city on the mainland of your choice, and since this is a power, it could only be used once a day.

Taking a hint from an EQII Epic Quest...
We could make it as one run per province. You have to run a set route and we could manage that with a series of activators, eg certain landmarks in cities which say their history when touched. Once you finish the race in one province you get a nice item. In a hypothetical completed Tamriel you get one of the few 'uber' items we could add, like a belt which has the constant effect version of those nifty Scrolls of the Wind (invisibility and very fast levitation) or maybe Icarian Flight

I was thinking a power would be something more realistic. It could be something like 'Traveller's Story' and could fortify Speechcraft or Merchantile for a minute or so, of course only being able to be used once per day, as all powers. That way instead of just one more item, you have something that you will always have with you. Yes I think Jale's idea probably is best, something similar to a 'Pilgram's Path' type quest. Of course, first we need to finish all of Tamriel, but in the meantime we could have a Morrowind one, the only issue being that Vvardenfell is a fairly important part of Morrowind and we can't touch it. Not that it really matters, if Vvardenfell was in the race, Map 6 may be neglected. Just my two drakes worth.

Starcloud's second idea is absolutly script friendly. Scripting a time trial is not hard at all. OK, no, there will be some probs but hopefully all of them could be overcame. So what about small runs around each map and than one big around Morrowind ?
