Creatures of Necromancy

Post by Psyborg »

Hey. It's Psyborg again, armed with another idea. My idea this time is... necromancy. Well, no, that's not my idea, my idea is thus:

Necromancy is very... scary. Necromancy is a BAD THING. Necromancers are BAD PEOPLE. Therefore, Necromancers could use their powers of Necromancy to create VERY BAD THINGS. Such as ZOMBIES. Such as CONGLOMERATE CREATURES MADE OUT OF ZOMBIE PARTS. Such as VERY DISGUSTING CREATURES SEWED TOGETHER OUT OF DECAYING PARTS, WHICH HAVE METAL AND BONE STITCHED IN BETWEEN THE FLESH AND MISCELLANIOUS BIOLOGICAL MATERIAL WHICH SHRIEK AND HOWL IN THE DARKENED CAVERNS OF THE NECROMANCER'S HIDDEN CAVERNS AND RATTLE THEIR CHAINS AND... AND... and... (cough)

Anyway, so we don't really have that many creepy monsters in Morrowind. Especially not with Necromancers... I mean... skeletons aren't scary in the slightest. No offense, anyone who thought skeletons were scary. So what I'm asking here is for people to submit ideas for SCARY ZOMBIE CREATURES. I tried, but they ended up looking foolish and rather cute, in the case of one of them (who I named "Peppy")

Anyway, so perhaps this is a bad idea, but I'm asking anyway. Right. Righto. Ta ta for now...

Necromancy itself isn't neccessarily bad, there can be good necromancers. They just often are bad.

Yes I would agree we do need some scarier creatures. maybe when vorrheis gets back.

Naw, never really been a fan of RTSs myself, save Rome:Total War... anyway, got this idea while fighting my way through Ravenholm in HL2... and feeling very frightened at those nasty fast headcrab zombies. Luckily, my shotgun saved me from a quick dismemberment by them, and I survived to bring y'all this idea.

Hey all, it's Psyborg with a pic... unfortunately, after adding hundreds of gory details to it, I realized it's just cute with it's big eyes like that... I named it "Nana", and figured I'd show it to y'all.

Cool, huh? Nana's one mean dude. He'll... look at you. With his creepy eyes. THEN you'll be sorry!

Well these do sound like some of the corpse preporation books, so this does not go against lore :)) you have my vote. Oh, and one of these "Zombies" could be a remodled/retextured Corprus Stalker.
Anyway your drawings are  COOL!!

It's...it's DANCING! Run away!
Try adding some yellow eyes and red sockets to Nana.
Keep the things holding the eyes open, though!

EDIT: Argh, disrupted by the pic-width.

P.S. After looking at your site, I had a thought: Undead Kagouti!

It might not have to do with necromancy, but it rates somewhere on someone's standardized creepiness scale and does involve some form of infernal summoning.

Oh well, to late. Just, pretend all the iron ore sticking out it is super-compressed bone that, by some magical and totally unrealistic process, turned it into metal.

Be wary of going overboard and making it gory for the sake of it; that way you just end up with something from Resident Evil. Things that look threatening just don't make you crap yourself in Morrowind, because you know for a fact that you can rip it to pieces with a few swings of your Daedric dai katana.
Instead try and make undead things look creepy, and most of all make them look DEAD, like they have no earthly right to be walking around looking for their best socks: bulging glazed eyes, no emotion in their expressions, all that jazz.

I have to say, the Corprus Stalker was by miles a lot scarier than any of the Bonewalkers. It's not just a creatures look, it's gotta be their movement, their motivation. These things can't be done with blood everywhere. It's gotta be in the animation, and above all, the setting. I think we need suitably creepy environments to set these in. Those Velothi tombs are child's play.

Yeah, most definitely. Well-placed sound effects are as scary as well-placed shadows too. Granted, most of these creatures will be placed in dungeons anyway, but setting IS 90% of a monster's terror factor (scientific terminology).
For example, put a corprus stalker in Balmora in broad daylight; he just looks like a bum.

If you need inspiration for zombies (not stalkers but actual zombies) just look at some Oblivion screenshots.

and most of all make them look DEAD
agreed.

If anyone have played thief the dark project, there were some zombies that made my heart stop for five seconds each time I saw them.

The reason they were so scary was because of their "dead-look", you know... you just walked towards the bodies... you just stand there and look at them, and suddenly it start to move and walk.

Is it possible to animate a creature to lay still untill player approaches?

Man ferringo you should turn one of your drawings into an avatar, that'd be cool! Personally a few of my doodles would make some good TES zomie stalkers.

viKING, you can do something like that, in Qarls clothing mod it makes skeletons lie down and when you activate them they get up and attack you. Absolutely scared the shits outta me when I went to get the skellies clothing :P

That'd be good, to have them wake up and attack you, but again you've gotta be wary of going overboard and using it too much. Otherwise the player expects every corpse he sees to get up and start smacking him around, and it's not scary anymore. And after games like half life and thief, people expect that from corpses anyway

guys lets just have some of that plain old scary silent corpse creeping up on you? i wanna see some corpses get up and hit me when i try to steal their booty, i think Tanriel would benefit from a little bit of inspiration from games like half life ect. not too much but just enough to make you feel a little bit giddy when you walk into tht little tomb....

That whole bit about sewing different creatures together, melding them with machines, that inspired this creature:

Abomination

I know it's not anything from the Morrowind/Tamriel world, but maybe some sick-ass Necromancer made it up all by himself, you know? I tried to put some Dwemer looking metal pieces on, maybe the lower half is composed of rotted Dreugh tentacles...

A few interesting bits:
-One of the tentacles is covered in fingers
-the head is designed after an Angler Fish
-hard to see, but the thing's intestines are hanging out a bit.
-part of a human face is sewn into the back

EWWW! :P

^^That is one sweet-looking beastie. Like you said, it could've been contrived by some evil necormancer. But, it is doubtful that several would independently create such a monster, so it would only make sense in a select dungeon, maybe two.

I definately think we could benifit from a creepier zombie creature. Somthing like that oblivion screenshot. Rotting, peices of it falling off, maybe missing one eye, a peice of its skull, having some arrows still stuck in it. Stuff like that.
Claims completed:
Yashazmus, Shrine of Mehrunes Dagon
Mzankh, Dwemer Ruin
Nchazdrumn, Dwemer Ruin
Sirrilas, Shrine of Mephala
Moriken, Abandoned Dunmer Stronghold
Old Necrom Morag Tong GH
Darconis Diamond Mine
Assorted other boring claims.

The Abomination thing, I think it's sufficiantly scary enough. Imagine: You're at 3 health, one healing potion left. Dark tomb, creepy groaning and whispering noises everywhere. Your armor is broken, and your only weapon left is a half-ruined iron dagger. You come to an intersection, that, that- THING jumps out from a corner and roars into your face, it's horrid breath filling your lungs and all you see is it's beastly head! Then you scream like a girl and punch your monitor. It's scary. Good job too! But that would be hell to model.

if enyone played thief: deadly shadows, they know what a scary Zombie is! by the way: try to imagine an undead zombie-corbrus beast... or maybe a ghoul (mutated beasts that eat human flesh, they are alive)
creapy!

I think we could DEFINITELY use some HL2-style ADHD zombies that totally spazz out and leap at you from above/below/wherever. Also, we need good sounds - the morrowind undead creatures sound more like bored hippos than creepy zombies.

The abomination is cool beyond reason, but I agree- it would be a nightmare to model, and to animate... well, a two-legged walk cycle is tough enough (I've heard), and a fifteen-odd walk cycle... well, do the math. But if it could be done, it would be awesome.

Also, I agree with sirwootalot. We need some HL2-fast-headcrab-zombie-esque creatures, but I don't know how the engine's pathfinding would be able to handle something moving that fast, or maybe it would be fine, I don't know. But we need more pants soiling sudden frights... with proper monster placement and good level design, it shouldn't be that hard to have at least a couple "aaah!" moments, even if no scripting is involved.

Hm. Well, here's something I whipped up this morning after eating my Cocoa Puffs. Mm, Cocoa Puffs. They're like chocolate... for your breakfast cereal needs! (note the chin sewed to the neck for an eternal open mouth) The fireball I added because I like drawing fireballs.
