TR Community Competition 1: Texture Darnell's Face!

Post by Vernon »

Dexter and I have been discussing the idea of a TR community competition. They will be run every couple of weeks or so and are mainly aimed at promoting fun. Here is how it will work:

We will find something we need for a quest, model or similar, and outline roughly what it should be like. What we are looking could be a drawing, texture, mesh, piece of music, anything really. Here's the bad news: I'm a poor, lowly student, so there is no prize money! :P However, the best piece of work will be chosen for use in a place of prominence.

Things to keep in mind: This is just for fun. If you do a piece of work and it isn't selected, remember it might well be used somewhere else! The selection process involves a primitive combination of beer, headbutting and sofa thievery, so don't let that stress you.

Without further ado, roll on competition one!

Darnell is a map one NPC. He was a scout for the legion until recently. He was really good at working solo, and enjoyed doing so. A recent bit of EEC politics got him promoted to champion, which meant that he was forced to abandon field work. He hates his administrative position, he takes out his frustration on the recruits, and is extremely strict. Basically, hes a total badass with a short temper. The kind of guy who always has a mean look in his eye.

Here is Dexter's sketch of Darnell:

Now get a hold of The GIMP, Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro or whatever program you want to use, grab a redguard head texture from the CS CD for a reference, and get painting! The competition will last until there are enough entries. ;)

I hope to see good things from this. Chocks away, cap'n!

And to add to the reward, I will guarantee that the winner will recieve absolutely no insults from me until a new champion is crowned. I mean it too. None.

Here is an example redguard texture that can be used as a template:

Get involved. Even if you haven't retextured before, take this opportunity to give it a go!

Wow, Graff that is really quite good. I guess he could look a little more angry and maybe his brows are just a bit too thick by the width of a bee's dick, but otherwise, I like it.

This is the best idea ever. :D

Just keep in mind that Darnell is still one of the good guys in the quest line.. he's just hands-on badass.

Can't we just recolor a picture of Dexter?

It should be a texture, not picture colouring. BTW there's one more entry in the competition which will be announced today.

Paint? Don't use paint, use GIMP:

edit: that was not even close to the right link. Use the one Vernon has provided.

Massey that is quite good, but I suggest you use The GIMP - it is an open-source (free) photoshop clone.

Get the first two downloads on this page:

http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html

It is really a very good image editing program. Try it.

edit: I guess Dex beat me to the mark. :P

To convey the feeling of his personality, a few key changes need to be made to the texture that Vernon has provided.
First off, his mouth needs to be altered so that he looks like he has a frown/sneer. Second, his eyes need to be narrowed and angled so that he has a mean look about him.
Take a look at the Redguard faces in the game to see what the texture Vernon has provided looks like when mapped onto the model. From there, think about how to change it so that the right feeling is conveyed.

This doesn't look like dexter's sketch at all.. but it still looks mean. In this one Darnell lost an eye and got a gold replacement... and he also has some gold eyebrow studs.

And here's another thing you can try: painting a larger texture will allow you to fit more detail in. It can then be resized - this technique works particularly well as you get more room to work with and the resizing will filter the details down nicely.

My try for today. He really doesn't look all that angry to me, maybe just a little pouty. I'll try again some other time, but right now--- eh.

Wow excellent work, Psyborg! Woot, you got character into that face better than anyone else on this page, but hell, its pretty frigging scary. We could use that on some crazy hermit redguard who eats dead pilgrims or something. ;) Also, the mouth has to be closed, unfortunately.

Psyborg, I think your texture is the best in here. Yes, that includes Serra's. Even she said it was better than hers. One thing that just struck me though to make it complete. On the left (our left, his right) of the hairline, there are those three scars that go into the scalp. What if you took those out, and put one on the other side of his head, to continue the scar over his eye? I think that would make you the winner hands-down.

I love Paint Shop Pro, so much fun to transform people into historical British Admirals or long nosed freaks!

In any event, here's my attempt:

In the 550's Byzantine Generals Narses and Liberius were winning battles into their 80's. Retirement programs, though no longer including raping and pillaging, have clearly improved since.

Hi. Here's the updated texture...

I'm not too pleased about the scar in the hair, it didn't turn out the way I wanted it to, but that's a'ight.

And here's a CS shot I made- I think I might have used the wrong head, but it gets the point across anyway.

Well no, I'm not saying I should get rid of it. I just thought I could do better.
But, if you think it looks fine, then I'll keep it in. Now that I've looked at it for a while, it doesn't look that bad.

It just looks a little larger than the one on the eye. It doesn't look like a continuous scar, but more like a separate scar that just happens to be directly above the other.

Okee doke. I downplayed the scar a little, and changed it's position and... well, I changed the scar a bit. I can get rid of it completely, if you'd like, but... anyway, it's up there. Hope you like it...
