Well, I listen to Hip-Hop. Most of the time. Big fan of G-Unit.

I sometimes listen to rock, Iron Maiden mostly.

And go ahead, flame me like there is no tomorrow, but that would be kinda childish. I don't flame you for listening to your favorite music either?

Why do most people on the internet and on mod forums listen to rock?
Well,I don't listen to rock much. I dicovered trances and I like a lot (no, I don't rave). One of my favorite songs is CloudWalking, by Pulser, which is a classic...

...oh, and I kiss my Tiësto CDsss every morning...

Can't really say a favorite song... But I really love the Gladiator soundtrack. I'm more of a fan of movie-soundtrack style orchestra music than anything else ;)
Claims completed:
Yashazmus, Shrine of Mehrunes Dagon
Mzankh, Dwemer Ruin
Nchazdrumn, Dwemer Ruin
Sirrilas, Shrine of Mephala
Moriken, Abandoned Dunmer Stronghold
Old Necrom Morag Tong GH
Darconis Diamond Mine
Assorted other boring claims.

I like rock, but what most of you listen to is not rock. deth metel isn't rock. its not even music, its noise.
No melody, no beat, it doesn't evoke any mood or emotion, except maybe numbnesss and apathy.

I seriously have a grudge against the whole hip-hop culture. but I come from a town that is the very definition of caucasian, white collar, middle class america, yet all the kids dres and act like they're from 'da 'hood because they're from the bronx or somewhere, when in reality their family moved from a nice part of the bronx when they were 4.

hell, in a town named pleasantville, which very much looks like the stereotypical mental picture of a "pleasantville" I saw a bunch of 16 year olds dressed and walking around like they were a bunch of "gangstahs". It's hilarious to see some white as snow irish kid with red hair and freckles dressed like a rapper-wannabe trying to be tough and intimidating.

and can that guy with that raspy voice say anything else in a song except "YEEEEEAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!"?

Flat out fucking wrong. I don't know what you've listened to . . . get over the voice and listen to the music and the lyrics. For example, all of the instrumentals in Cradle of Filth are amazing. The singer's voice is what gets to people (unable to decipher it), but the lyrics he creates are poetry in some of the songs.

Besides, most rock is just noise . . . you don't have to even think to listen to it, it's only something that ends up in the background. There are some rock bands who are very good, and lots who suck.
Only the prospect of death makes life worth living.

What if I told everyone my favorite song was "Pictures at an Exhibition" (second movement, "The Great Gate of Kiev") by one of the greatest composers ever, Mussorsgky? Or "Moonlight Sonata" by Beethoven? Yes, I listen to classical music liesurly. I find that, going back a hundred years or so, Music evokes much greater thoughts and emotion than anything I see today.

That doesn't mean I do not enjoy it. On contrary, it has given me the ability to look at all music as music. People who stick to one genre as "music" limit themselves. Death Metal is music, regardless. You can't say otherwise. You can say that "It doesn't do it for me", but no matter your oppinion, it is music.

Other than that, if I had to pick a more modern favorite, it'd have to be Rasputin:

RA RA RASPUTIN
Lover of the Russian queen
There was a cat that really was gone
RA RA RASPUTIN
Russia's greatest love machine
It was a shame how he carried on

even without the screaming voice, its still noise, no recognizable tune. poetic lyrics? I think we have completely different versions of what is poetic.

I bought a metallica's greatest hits CD once. It was blank.

try listening to the stones, Pink Floyd or Steppenwolf. or other greats that are worthy of being called musicians.

To be fair, Eraser, people would have slated those very bands as noise half a century ago. God knows some people still do. Some metal is just noise, but sometimes that's what you want and need; an aural bashing to clean out your system and make you think and feel things that other music just doesn't even touch upon. (Ram Jam are better than Steppenwolf though, in the classic rock stakes :P)
Favourite song, though.... hmmm.... if you could put David Bowie, Stevie Wonder, Jeff Buckley and Jimmy Gnecco in a big pan and mix them all together, then say, "right, you blind, faggoty, girly-voiced goth, write me a ****ing great tune, and be quick about it!" then that would probably be my favourite song.
At the moment though, probably "Rid Of Me" by PJ Harvey.

really, eraser, your outlook on this seems very narrow to me. It's like a guy from hudson bay in canada talking about how he hates surfers; he has no actual experience with the subject whatsoever; just brief encounters on TV and movies.

haha! yeah, Sirwoot. You know, there's a Stevie Wonder lyric, "looking at your hands, hands can understand". That's kind of a good analogy. Perhaps.

By the way Cjad, is that a picture of you cleverly disguised as Geoff Capes, or is it John Taylor Thomas?

Actually, that is a real picture of me from my Senior Year at Norwegian Viking High. Obviously, it was then I discovered my love for music, taking me all over the world until I eventually settled into the Caribbean (ultimately, I now live in Miami, which is close enough). Here is a more recent picture...

Now, I like to listen to old Sea Shanties and kick everything with Spongebob Squarepant's face on it.

I've heard enough heavy metal to form an opinion on it. Where I work, there used to be a girl who loved it and played it on the computer (thankfully at a low volume) and was always boasting about having tickets to a mega deth concert.

Oo heavy metal.

I rank it with Emo. Its just msuic with an intensly narrow view on human emotions. Heavy Metal is widely limited to 'hatehatehatehate' and emo is 'oooihurtoooihurtoooihurt'. I like bands with a huge emotional range. De-Loused in the Comatorium by the Mars Volta...

Losing conciousness
Confusion
Excitement
Ectasy
Tranquillity
Commotion
Hate
Love
Loss
Mourning
Dying
Death

Some in one song. And thats just scratching the surface.

Dude those are al great songs but they just don't compare to Schism. Tool is the most awsome band ever to exist. Another good Tool song is Aenima and Stinkfist. I think everyone and their mother knows Sober.

I'm changing my favorites...
(in no particular order)

O-Zone - Dragostea Din Tei
Stupid catchy Romanian dance crap! Aaaiiigh!

Rammstein - Ramstein
I think it's just an enjoyable song.

Pop Will Eat Itself - Ich Bin Ein Auslander
With, er, 'radical' views on modern politics, it's also a pretty solid tune.

Van Halen - Eruption
Words cannot describe the godliness of this song. You must listen nooooowww....heh.

Select the 1974 Yes classic 'Relayer'. This masterpiece has three tracks, of which:
'Gates of Delerium' melded classical music with heavy metal style and produced my favourite piece of music, of all time.

On 'The Blues':
Jimmy Page would be the best blues guitarist. Ever.

On Blue Oyster Cult:
Gadzukes! A band I've not heard of in 25 years!

On hip-hop:
It may be art; it may be dance; it may be a lifestyle: It is not music.

Jimmy Page the best blues guitarist ever, pah!! I love the Zep and everything, as one should, but that's like saying Buckley is the best Qawwali singer.
It's just wrong.
I'd agree with you about hip-hop if I wasn't so open-minded and liberal. However, Rap is crap. Hey that rhymed; that must make me a lyrical gangsta. I should go and steal some beatz from James Brown and pen some inanities about my money and my hos. Or laydeez, as they like to be called nowadays. It's just political correctness gone mad.

Anyone here for indie? If you haven't taken a look at indie music before, you're missing out. Check it out. Anyway, here's a sample of songs that are excellent.

Decemberists: 16 Military Wives; On the Bus Mall; The Engine Driver; Odalisque; Leslie Anne Levine
The Unicorns: Child Star; Tuff Ghost; Innoculate the Innocuous
The Pixies: Where Is My Mind; Gouge Away; Allison
(International) Noise Conspiracy: Impostor Costume; Smash It Up
June of '44: all pretty amazing from what I've heard
Only the prospect of death makes life worth living.

Indie's not bad, though British indie tends to be classed more as the floppy-haired likes of Oasis, Coldplay, Doves and their ilk. I could have gone to see the newly-reformed Pixies not long ago, but I'm not a big fan, I think they're overrated (though their influence can't be dismissed). Monkey Gone to Heaven is class though. "If the Devil is six, then God is seven" is the quintessential shouty lyric

About metal...
It is music. And Jac is right, some of the lyrics for bands like Cradle of Filth are poetic. For example, go to Google and read the lyrics for Amor E Morte. It's a fairly well-written song about a vampire and his bride (at least that's how I read it). Now, while the lyrics themselves are well-written, the subject matter still blows dogs for quarters. I haven't seen a Cradle of Filth lyric yet that doesn't reek of shitty cliches.
Instrumentals are okay. Cradle of Filth doesn't bring much to the table in terms of technique, they just have some impressive speed. Not so impressive that you won't find fifty well-know professional guitar players that are faster, though.
So yes, black metal, death metal, heavy metal, or whatever you want to classify it as this week is music. It's just horridly predictable music.
