New Guars

Post by Arthmodeus »

Michael Kirkbride on Guars: http://www.elderscrolls.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=62429&hl=
Lizards. Another little known fact is that the Imperials often refer to Guars as "tigers". Here's why: during a tour of Morrowind in the earliest days of the Armistace, Tiber Septim became enamored of the beasts. On the mainland, and specifically the Deshaan Plains, Guars are striped. This, coupled with the fact that His Holiness was never able to pronounce "Guar" correctly (his troubles with the provincial Chimeric tongue is legendary), led to Septim finally callings them "tigers", from a fabled recollection of a storybook beast he loved as a youth.

The new name stuck. Even now, Dres slavers often refer to their cattle-guar as tigers.

MK.
Mainland Guars need retexturing NOW. Is anyone up to this?

Sounds like a bullshit excuse to cover a gap in their lore. Like how there are no horses in Morrowind because they are a dunmer delicacy.. and the grass also makes them sick...

But stripped guars are so cool! I want one.

Besides, I think he made it up then so it'd be something cool that everyone would be like "oh that's neat, I luv stripped guars" and stuff.

But when you follow through on bullshit, it no longer is bullshit and becomes an interesting part of the cultures of the game world. So I fail to see how that's an argument against it...

I mean, if someone volunteers to retexture a guar to have stripes, then I'll have Stalker add it to CoT and do all the replacing myself. But I don't think it is a big enough issue to prioritize ourselves with.

Don't forget than we should only add them to Deshaan Plains.

It says they are predominant in the Deshaan Plain, but also that there were striped guars elsewhere on the mainland. Which means that on the Deshaan, all guars should be striped, but outside of it, the guars could be 50 - 50.

Not a problem. And excuse or not but I like the idea of stripped guards.

would it be possible for spawned guars to have a randomized skin? I'd imagine you could find Guars with a blotched hide, guards with lighter underbellies than the rest of their body, etc.

I've just taken a look at the textures for Guars, considering there's about 20 textures to modify and match together, there's no way I'm doing this.

This isn't an excuse. Kirkbride said that he wasn't making this up in a later post.

I'm no good at textures but I'll see what I can do.

While your at it, can't you make guars more peaceful? Since the "corky"-quest (you know, when the evil Hlaalu guy in Caldera wants his taxes from the farmers) I like them and do not enjoy killing these nice little creatures.

I didn't realise guars wore clothing in the first place. :P

Yeah, striped guars would be pretty neat.

I'm surprised MK is working with ES again, though. Didn't he leave after a very nasty fight with the other devs? Well, good to know he's still a bit involved. I always liked his weird imagination. :)

This particular bullshit makes absolutely no sense at all. If there are no horses, they can't be eaten. :)

Anyway, there were horses in the Morrowind province in Arena -- you just had to use fast travel to see one. :P

It's because that the Dunmer ate them all that they aren't there. Imperials aren't bringing them because they fear that some ravenous Dunmer will steal their horses.

But the Dunmer LOVE horses. They love them more than we love sheep and cows.

Please, leave this discussion on the Kirkbride thread in the Lore section.

Here, I made the Textures. Someone has to apply these to the Guar Model, since I don't know how.

It's pretty easy - you just open the nif in niftexture and replace the correspoding textures with your own. :) You obviously have to rename them to TR standard first though.

I attached the textures to the mesh, and it should work. The stripes look like they're painted on to me, though.

I think they would look much better if you could have the stripes be transparant. Do you know how to add transparancies (I sure don't)?

Using PSP - New Layer, set Transparency to x%. Did you just airbrush them with black? I'd have used the burn tool.

Yeah, someone could definately do better than me. For now, I'm through with retexturing.

Maybe the stripes could be more "tiger-like".

I imagine that they're tigerlike if guars are called "tigers." I think the part that makes it look like tatoos most is actually the unstripiness. Stripes are usually in a row, not all swirled and random like what you have here.

If that didn't make sense, here's a word-picture example.

I was just thinking that since it was Morrowind, the stripes would be unique.

I'll get started on a new one, though.

If you are going to do this, don't make the stripes so regular and geometric.

Make them more random and natural looking.

I assume we want it to look like darkened skin rather than paint or a tattoo. Try darkening the areas rather than painting over them, or you will lose the skin detail underneath.

ok, I give up this retexture... It is hard to make, and not very fun to make.

The paint mistake problem is quite easy to fix, without making a whole new texture, so if the guar I already posted could be used, just talk to me, and I'll fix it.
