TR Community Competition 3: Give this creature a name!

Post by Vernon »

The Dwemer Explodo needs a proper name. We have come up with nothing in our brief brainstorming for a name, so we are hoping someone can come up with a better one for it. This device carries an explosive payload around Dwemer mines; the payload is used to 'excavate' huge holes in the earth, so miners can move deeper and retrieve minerals that would have been unattainable otherwise. Here is a picture of the device:

I'm fond of the Dwemer Drone or Dwemer Mining Drone. It's short, simple, and to the point (like the other Dwemer construct names).

I have seen centurion archers though.

What it should be named depends on what it is used for. If it is mainly for blowing up intruders, bomb centurion would work. Or whatever the case it could be called the Dwemer Detonator.

It is for blowing rocks only. It will never attack you.

Since this dwemer construct shouldn't be attacking, putting Centurion in the name shouldn't be proper, since all of the constucts built for battle had Centurion in their names, rather than the airship called the "Dirigible". Acronyms seem a little edgy too :\

Caviteer (not a real word I think)
Disinterer
Disintermer

You can try to mix and match with "floating" or "earth"...

Floating Discharger
Earth Rupturer
Earth Caviteer

And so on. I like Earth Caviteer myself.

Dwemer Scarab

There was already a Dwemer artifact called the Puzzle Scarab (I think), which was featured in Redguard.

Agreed. I too thought the centurion thing was battle-oriented. As for acronyms, they won't be accepted unless they are both uber-cool and heavily disguised with bracers of normal-wordlookingness +1 :D

None of Dwemeri creations had the word "Dwemer" in their name. Instead they had "centurion" or "sphere" which denoted either their shape or, I think, the fact than they are animunculi. So centurion is something like animunculi. You won't call it Flying Animunculi, right ?
Giving it no name is just blantly stupid. Did you know that Kaagstag was Kaargstag ? Nope, but he had a name.

Centurion is a rank in the ancient roman military. Anything named centurion is DEFINATLY of agressive/defensive nature.

Theo is on to somethig : Sapeur, but perhaps with the Anglificated spelling : Sapper (as there are no obviusly latinbased words in the other constructs names)
i would prefer
"Dwemer Sapper"

(Btw, fyi: a sapeur or "sapper" is someone who mines through the use of explosives)

I am aware of that. But something true in RL can be false in TES. For example absense of aforementioned rank of centurion in Imperial legion :)
Anyway something with the word "Dwemer" won't fit the general scheme of animunculi naming.
My suggestion was Bumblebee Centurion because it is bigger than just bee (bumblebee that is) and doesn't bite as wasp or hornet. Plus Bee Centurion sounds even more stupid than Bumblebee Centurion :)
Scarab really won't do because they crawl, not fly.
I would suggest to try finding something close to bumblebee but less stupid. Maybe take a latin name of the specimen and change it a bit to sound less latin ?

I think Jale's rotor centurion (or maybe animunculi since its passive?) has been the best so far.
