Hardware upgrade

Post by Eraser »

I'm planning on upgrading very very soon(yes OB, but call of duty 2 more urgently). I've always been alot more knowledgable about software than hardware, so hopefully I can get some good help.

I have a P4 2.4 ghz and a gig of ram. I want to upgrade to something in the 3 ghz range, as well as switch over to PCI express and Nvidia. I'm also thinking of switching to AMD over intel.

I want to get what's very high end today and spend the least I can.

Does anyone know if motherboards can support both PCI express and AGP?
Also, are there any motherboards that I can use my P4 chip in now, and simply buy an AMD chip and use later?

Since AMDs are rated differently, what chip and speed is equivalent or better to an intel 3.0 ghz, and which is cheaper for the same speed?

None that I would now of...

No, since Intel and AMD chips use different sockets and have a slightly different architecture.

The AMD quantispeed rating is quite useful to compare AMD and Intel chips. The quantispeed rating 3000+ means, that the chip has an equivalent (or slightly higher) performance as a 3.0 Ghz P4, and usually consumes less energy. AMD is generally a little cheaper than Intel, but the difference is quite small...

sorry if this is a retarded question, but when you upgrade, could you mail me your old parts? I can basically only mod every other saturday, because my own computer has fried parts (motherboard, vid card, processor, or a cobination of those).
I'm also planning to upgrade, and like eraser, mainly for oblivion. Problem is, I have a budget limit of around $650, and I'm basically buying a brand-new computer except for case and drives. What i have planned so far...

420W power supply, $50
Video Card, roughly $200
Motherboard, roughly $80
multiple Cooling devices, roughly $40
1 gig of ram, $80
Processor, roughly $200

I'm dedicating so much to cooling because my current computer was fried from a lack of adequate fans.
I'm thinking i'll get a GeForce 6800 for the video card, but that's assuming the price will drop to around $200 by the time ATI releases its new cards. Any suggestions for processor? I'd rather not have a Pentium D, however; DRM is a total bitch from what i've heard.

Sorry wooty but I have a father and brother who are also desperately in need of an upgrade and haven't gotten any hand-me-downs in a long while.
