i'm interested in doing writing, research and concept art; is there anything in particular that needs doing? or do i just pick something at random, stick it in a topic and see what happens?

Well, the positions where someone is always welcomed are:

Concept Art
Sound/FX/Music
Lore
Literature/Writing
Scripting

And the parts of TR that need people sporadically are:

Quests
Exteriors
Interiors
NPCs

If you feel up to taking over a Work In Progress (WIP) story/writing work, feel free to drop by the Lit & Writing board sometime and choose one of the ones that's available there.
