Yes, the floods occur durring the rainy season. Essentaily, there isnt any soil or plants to soak it up so it just floods.

The thing looks so darn cool though, I think it's worth turning a blind eye to. but that's just IMO.

Well nothing says it is in a canyon really, the picture could be the a cut between two large plataeus which drained away from that cut on both sides.

i have no idea how realistic the thought is, but i had the idea of the desert winds building up on the flatlands and carving up these massive dunes, fifty feet high, in which the nomads camp for protection from the winds. in my vision, the nomads use their spears and shields as tentposts, jabbing them into the face of the dune and draping their cloaks and saddles on them to create temporary tents. one man carved a niche out of the dune and laid out on a rug; another curls up next to his beast of burden and lays beneath the saddle hangings for warmth. in the background, another group is disassembling its encampment, stripping the spears and pulling them free; on the right-hand side you can see, near the bottom, a figure carrying a rolled rug to load up one of the beasts (note that i also had the idea of making the camel-like creatures sleep standing up, like cows, so the nomads could sleep beneath them).

i see them as herders, living with their - whatever they are's - going from oasis to oasis. as such small groups, however, these are probably treasure-seekers, taking two or three animals out in the deep desert to look for Dwemer ruins. thus, instead of having the accoutrement of a full compliment of men, they make due using their weapons and clothing for shelter. the animals themselves are like camels with webbed feet and long tails; the webbed feet make walking on sand easier and the tissues of the long tails hold excess water, as do the fat pouches around the torso. the creatures themselves eat by dragging the tail as they walk; the spike on the end unearths burrowing creatures like snakes, rats and moles, which that camel-looking thing proceeds to dismember. the nomads eat the meat of their burden-beasts; use their skins and organs for materials; use the bones for blades, hilts, and staves; use the fat for butter; and, upon an animal's death, may drink the blood as well.

the thought came up of using the radiant AI schedule system to actually plot nomads' courses from oasis to oasis...

Most certainly, the box canyon bit is something I made-up as an afterthought. After all, now that it's Vulnim Gate, being a frequent for deluges of mud and water would make it a terrible path.

Of course, not being a canyon still doesn't solve their rock fracture problem

Okay guys, another sketch, a better one. This one is a variation. It portrays a small desert town in Central Hammerfell. In the background, a lone scout looks for the caravan while in the foreground a large sand dune swallows up the small town. The town consists of a temple, church, two houses and some tents. There is also a small well (which has dried up) and some cracked ground meaning the area is dry and arid. The caravan enters town with a wagonload of spices for the market. Like in my first drawing, the market guy is signaling the caravan, as people come out and watch it come in. Anyone have any suggestions?

Not quite a town (I realised I misread it when I was about halfway done) So I just finished it. It is just a group of about three guys traveling. I was getting a bit sick of making objects. Hope you like.

PS:how do you make the pictures display as thumbnails? I cant display mine without it being huge.

I didnt know myself just make a smaller version of your image and use it as a thumbnail. Then link it to your image.

Nice. I like it, kinda like pit stops on long voyages, perhaps we can have some of these scattered around desert roads.

i really like it...try sticking four of those tents together with a fire or camels in the middle, or stick a bunch in the - uh - non-windward side of the dune, and you've got the beginnings of a nomad village, i'd say.

What about this?

The ramp leading up to gate would divert a flash flood through the two channels on the side, they could simply go underwater, and that would mean that no one could go through unless they had water breathing. I drew a nifty picture first, but I don't have a scanner so the paint hack job is all you'll get.

Nalzay, if you took the palms off the crest of the dune it would look better though.

i thought i'd draw more of a mountain side concept of a town :)
yeah i stole the tower, thought it fit great with the whole "outlook" idea

as u can see there's somewhat of a gaurd house near the bottom and a temple at the top and so on, lol

EDIT...

yeah... here's one with a wall... i threw in a trader so it doesn't look bare....

Welcome to the forums Jack. :) And thanks for sharing your ideas. Your town looks like a fairly 'civilized' place to be... a trading post perhaps? A place for nomads to exchange goods with traders who supply them with manufactured items? Your town also looks like its carved out of the rock...perhaps some sort of wall or gate would give them some protection on the front side.

Xronin: Interesting drawing about how the nomads use the dunes themselves as a temporary shelter. :)

I varied a little from the general idea. I think it would be awesome to have a camp with a few rich people paying a large group of thugs that are constantly fighting and digging, and a few questionable beast races with glowing bracers (*cough* slaves! *cough*). I think it would be a fun quest to choose to either help the rich people with digging or lead an uprising with the slaves and workers.

The surroungding area could be scattered with holes from previous days. Supplies are shipped in to avoid any officials in the cities with "illegal" dwemer booty.

It's not exactly a village but it was what popped into my head.

I use 3DS6, I'll work on the lots of tents thing. But it might look really repettitive so I'll try making other poses for the guys, and some kind of fire pit in the middle, though unless I make it at sunset, or night, they wouldnt be making a fire in the afternoon. Because it gets over 100 in the day and really cold in the night.

I have one on it's way. Been sitting on my desk since I drew it but I havent had time to scan it.

When I load it you will see a small mining town in the distance. It's built next to the mountain on a natural foundation.

The daimond mine brings emense wealth to the comunity. It's a good thing it does, because, in such hostile territory farming is imposible and all food must be imported. Caravans make regular stops bringing fresh supplies.

Families who live here make a sacrifice. The miners make good money for people of thier status. However, the isolation and terrible heat, not to mention the labor itself make it an undesirable job. Many a miner, especaily if he has a family, hopes to save money and move away, eventualy. However, many have grown old without ever achieving this goal and are buried in the nearby tomb.

[edit] And here it is. It's my first time out with charcoal pecils. It's not a work of art, but it is a concept.

Right, seeing that I was running out of time, I whipped up this, er... thing, which will serve as my WSG# 3 submission. I hope it is whithin the art rules and serves it's purpose. This is a tiny secluded town that has been built recently. It's inhabitants are considered well-off as far as desert dwellers go, and they live off of the land when possible. At good times, the villagers will buy directly from the caravans that sometimes pass through, but most of the time they attain goods from the small local market. I'll update this if it is possible, as I'm adding a grain crop and windmill, an above ground communal well, and a large fire pit area for recreation and storytelling.

(Edit: Oh, and the architecture is constructed out of some sort of mud resin: )

As he crept half dead over the sand dune he saw a small town incased in stone and with joy passed out at the site. He awoke sever hours later as the chill of sunset started to moisten his body. He tumbled over the dune right into the house of the mayor who, immeadeatly noticing, drew a chalise of water from a barrel. He sat the man up ad began feeding him the water in small amounts until the man came around. The man asked were he was. The mayor responded "The Middle Town." the man asked were they got their water. the mayor replied "Did You not see the trees behind our fare town? Derectly behind us is the greatest forest of Hammerfell. There is a river runnung directly behind this mount and we go by caravan every week or so to collect the pure water and fruits that lie there. We also hunt the meat in that treasured grove." with that the man fell unconsious agian and slept peacefully.

Here is my sketch. You'll have to forgive the quality...like I said.. i'm extremely busy at the moment.

Its a picture of a nomad coming in a trading outpost. Shrub roots are collected in the deep desert by the nomads and taken to the traders. At the post, the traders use a crude windmill to grind the roots of desert shrubs, and brew it into a nasty alcohol, which they in turn sell to merchants who take the product into the city.
