WSG#4 [A] Cliffside desert temple.

Post by Morden »

WSG#4 [A] Cliffside desert temple.

We had a previous topic which some people may consider similar to this. It was about the ancient ruins in the desert, and some people submitted ancient temples. This time I'd like you to consider mainstream temple that is in actual use, with active visitors. These structures will be necessary for the game, and we will be modelling some of these variants.

Some things to consider:

1. Take into account the different factions when drawing your sketch. Who is using this temple? From Zephyr: "there's the crowns, imperials and forebears and I think that especially imperial architecture has a footing on some cities, but it would also be interesting to see what kinds of differences there are between forebears and crowns".

2. It can be near a desert city, it can be in the deep desert, but it must be accessible to a community of worshippers.

3. To narrow things down, I've mentioned that it should be a cliff side temple, in keeping with the theme of towns near the mountains. The temple can be below the cliff, in the cliff, on the edge or just somewhere near a cliff.

------------------------------------------------------------
Conclusions and Reflections:

Well, I think I'll leave these to Morden, but I would just like to say thanks to everyone for participating. I really think this is the most successful Wsg thusfar. I hope you all continue to post your art and observations in future Wsgs. - Morgoth

Snakes play an important part in the traditional religions of Hammerfell, especially those in the Alik'r.

Here is my WSG submission. I did it up tonight... it was a bit rushed, as I'm not going to have anymore time.. but I hope it gets my idea across. Orignallly it was at the bottom of a cliff, it sort of took on the look of being on the side of a steep cavern wall.. i suppose thats a type of 'cliff'. Anyways, if i'd seen Sload's post i'd have definately added some snake imagery.

There is no Imperial influence in this drawing, except for perhaps the helmet on the statue, the rest is designed to be either for the Forebearers or the Crowns.

My old temple. It was already placed on a cliff.

Will be releasing a new one soon.

Good luck :)

(Nice drawing Morden, it will probably have some influence on my design)

Interesting stuff so far. I like Vholdrian's monumental temple. The pyramid style is neat to. However, I dont like the levitating platform so much. Perhaps it reminds me of the ministry of whatsit in Vivec.

This is a temple of the crown.<see city in the background>

It is devoted to a mortal mage who was loyal to the crown. He was a beastmaster and once while handling a <insetr name of deadly Hammerfell Cobra> he was bitten. The mage used a potion he thought to be cure poison but was actually turn undead. The poison interacted with the potion and the mage was tranceformed into a bipedal snake creature. Some regarded him as the Argonian Redguard othes saw him as a God, he was both and neither. He could be discribed only as, "The Redguard Saint with Snake Eyes." He was called this because he was only seen passing from one room to the next cloaked.

Still loyal to the crown he dedicated his life to finding a cure. Along the way he found cures to many diseases. for that he was considered a saint. Some devout followers even whisper he found a true cure for corprus but none were believed. When he died he achieved a very loyal following from the crown. He has even been reguarded as a hero, wiping out most plagues in the area. When his body was discovered he had two potions one labled as "Cure Transfomation" and another labled "Enlightenment."

His temple was crafted here when they found a small carving in the face. It was that of a snakeman with two diffrent eyes, both human. They crafted his temple and took the design for the eyes on the original carving and crafted one on either side of the temple. Ever since then an easternly wind has blown.

This is a nomadic style temple. Notice that since they are nomadic, their visit is short, accompanied with stories and legends of the Redgaurd Tall Papa and his three sons.

Okey-dokey, Another archetexture concept...

The standard temple in a town affiliated with the forebears is built into the side of a mountain (Anchient Yakudan coustom) The Crowns prefer a more monumental style (kind of like Vholdrian's). Historicly, the temple's were little more than sacred caves that led deep into the heart of the mountain, but in modern proper temples are hewn out of the clifsides. A statue of Ruptga (Tall Papa) typicaly stands in the main courtyard in a benevolent posture.

Commoners ofer thier daily prayers and lay offerings here, rarely venturing into the temple itself. They sometimes scrawl pious grafiti or stick written prayers into the masonry.

Passed the main courtyard, built into the sides of the mountain, lie sanctuaries to various other gods and local dieties. This one to the god of farming (who's name illudes me). To enter into the inner sanctem requires a show of faith (through a small tithe). Inside, the priests of the cult offer services relevent to thier god. A commoner will only venture here in dire need, to make an important sacrifice and implore the favor of a god.

first try

Post by xx_chromosome »

hi people,

this is my first try at WSG :)
i've always liked cliff side stuff... but never get to actually draw one.

so i did a bit of research on pictures.
sad to say that my skills is not that good so i am kinda basing it on this

i hope you don't mind ^^

here it is

in a nutshell, the city is up top. at the 2 sides of the cliff, connected by a bridge. people can access it through top. the giant statue holds a sword and a platform on the other side for the priest to stand and address the pilgrims (those not from the city)

i'll add some more details later :)

please C&C

I'm seeing a lot of very inspiring compositions so far, this is really nice!

Here's my concept, a bit astray from the cliff concept, I guess:

This temple's rise to power and fame was wrought from the commission to carve out the ancient faces of Ruptga, showing his discontent to Tava for ill-winded storms. This, of course, is hopeful assumption by the people that such a commemoration would appease the gods, but don't tell them that. Soon after the monument's completion, people took root on the temple's hillside and a town was born.

Great drawings, especially you, chromosome, good first week

As for me, I have my idea, just not exactly drawn yet. I'll put my sketch here later.

Lutemoth, love it. But what i like the most is your originality on the cliff side carvings, i like that.

Alright, here's my first concept "art" crap. Yeah, I can't draw. I'd like to learn to, but I don't have the time for now.

So there. As you can see, this temple is probably devoted to Sep, the Great Serpent. Two alternate style for the main, ornemented entrances are provided. A third would have been an open snake maw, but I was not cruel enough to inflict you my rendition of this.

The temple complex has been hollowed out in the rock, and so most of it simply follows natural lines of where it was the simplest to excavate. The haphazard placement of the troglodytic windows reflect this, but it allows to clearly see a pathway going from the secundary entrance, used to avoid profanating the ceremonial entrance for mundane purposes such as "going to the top" to the lookout tower above the cliff.

Since this troglodytic temple provides a sheltered way to go from the valley to the clifftop, it probably doubles at a trade place. The lookout tower is thus doubly useful in that it allows to watch the surroundings for caravans or bandits.

Actually, I like Vholdrian's monastery, it's quite good and not purely imaginary. Google for the word "meteora", ignore anything that has to do with Linkin Park, and check out any 'monastery on rocks' photos you will come across. Might give some inspiration.

A variation on my previous designs. I did Photoshop shading for the first time since long, so i hope this pleases thou eyes. ;)

EDIT: I know this is a big file, but reducing the size means such a decrease in detail that the drawing loses its 'feeling'. Not that it is that detailed, but just the little buildings and stuff get lost (when size is decreased).

i donno how much C&Cs are usually done in here :) but i really like your work lute~

the clean up looked a little better with more details on the shading.. still be nicer if you can try to adjust the lines now and make it smoother (ie the done, top of the cliff lines, etc.)
some parts lack a little depth.. so its a little inconsistant with the rest of the pic.

nice work on the prespective~

Well, here's my submission. Did this one last night. I like the design, to me it seems to suit Hammerfell, I think. This particular temple is very old, and very sacred. It is a Crown temple (shown by the large crown emblem above the main entrance.) The original walls are coated in a stucco-like substance, made from mud and plaster. The temple is in good shape, but some of the outer walls are slightly weathered, exposing the underlying brick. The two small buildings on either side of the main building serve as small two story shrines with one room on each floor. These would be used by the poor for prayer and burnt offerings. The large lower floor is the main entrace hall, which connects to several other prayer chapels which commoners may use. The higher tower is usually used only by nobles, although it is open to all people during religeous holidays. You have to pay a small fee in order to use any of these, so that sort of regulates which income classes can access which areas of the temple. Oh, and please remember, tomorrow is the last day that we will be accepting Wsg#4 art, so please get your peices in. Everyone's work so far has been stunning, keep it up!

-rather than does a muslim or arabesque design, i decided to try for a monolothic look, creating a cliffside Nedic temple thousands of years old, made by the original nomads of the desert. i took the valley idea we're all of fond of and carved in two giant stone profiles, inspired graphically by the Sith tombs on Korriban (argh, Star Wars geek, i know). the entranceways are on the top of the heads (marked by the banners at the cliff speaks) and through the toes (unseen here); the bottom pathways are marked by a stone wall which opens into a well, with a sacred tree in the center - i figured that water in the open desert would inspire such awe that the Nedic nomads would attribute the oasis' placement to divine providence. the idea of the monolith-men was that pilgrims would climb through each body part and get some different kind of enlightenment from it - all i know is, in Morrowind i walked through Marowak's Spine and the phrase stuck, so i pondered how to work in similar architectural entities here. the main spiral staircase would literally be the spine, with pathways for the leg bones, intestines, heart, brain, lungs, etc. the face opens up at the eyes, nostrils and teeth, with suspension bridges between the two profiles: they're supported by scaffolding on the egdes, but only the hardcore pilgrims go out into the sagging center, right over the sacred oasis, and pray staring right into the sun over the open erg.

xroninbasho23: hey.... i know korriban.. hehehe. n e ways ... i take from the pic that the temple is mostly inside??
though it might defy the purpose of builking a temple inside i guess it still is great to have some designs on the exterior. especially at the cliff top :)

morgoth: cool, reminds me of the LOTR stronghold.
how do you do the wall??

xx: I was thinking the same thing about LOTR! It looks like a minature minas tirith. I'm sure that is a complement Mr Melkor (that is to say Morgoth) will appriciate!

Heh, "Minis" Tirith?

Bad pun aside, much appreciated! But, please, it's Morgoth. I have left such benign names as Melkor behind me. Anyhow XX, the rock wall is actual rock, but I added alot of the details, because it was sort of bland before. The ground pattern is a pattern fill I made. The rest is all hand-done.

Great sketches all around guys, your efforts really show, and they're getting better every week.

Also, I really like your style Swedish Fish, its very unique. :D

Thanks for posting everyone, and welcome to the WSG XX_Chromosome :D The composition of your sketch is really good.

PS. I'm starting to get settled at my place in Toronto, but I still don't have much time to be active in the concept art forum (hence my lack of activity in WSG#4). However, I'll have the next topic up by tonight or tomorow morning.

i havent seen many imperial style temples so here is mine

It's sanctuary is formeed from an abandoned forbearers temple. It has been imperialized with stained glass, and two mud brick bell towers, one of which is complete.

the forbeares reguarded the two rocks beside the temple scacred. once a year they would crack and produce spring water that would be suplied to the nearby village as Holy Water.

Here's my take on this.

Built in the dead end of a canyon, carved right out of rock stands this temple, hidden from the praying eyes of the Crowds. Made countless generations ago, it has lost its former glory, but remains majestic and the faithful know there is shelter and help should they ever need any.
P.S. This sketch was partially based on the existing city of Petra (=stone), somewhere in middle east.

I'm a bit late, I know, but my beloved friend (cough cough) Stalker suggested I should still post it here. I just made this drawing after I had looked at this thread, but I was not planning on putting it here. Since I was slightly forced,(;))I will after all.

This is just a rather quick drawing and I artificially increased the contrast, which explains the darker background. Just as El Scumbago, I was inspired by the beautiful rock temples at Petra.

Link, because I did not have time to upload the picture anywhere else than my usual site.

I added a tower high up on the cliff for orientation purposes. I figured that a big rock formation in the middle of the desert was not exactly easy to find. So I started thinking about ways pilgrims could easily find this place. A tall tower seemed like a logical option.

At day, there could either be large bells ringing, so the pilgrims could hear the pilgrimage site long before they see it. On second thought, this looked like a rather noisy option. So I came up with the idea of smoke. A constant pillar of smoke would be easier to spot on the desert horizon. At night, there could be a fire, which pilgrims could head for, like a lighthouse. On the other hand, I don't think traveling is an option at night, at least not in a desert.
