Vertex Shading Tips?

Post by Cep »

Hello!

I have a major problem with vertex shading, I just can't seem to make it look...well right.

Can anyone give me the colors they use and some tips on how and where to use them?

Thanks! :D

pure black for under buidlings, dark muddy brown for the sides of buidlings, dark grey for under rocks, a bit darker then the ground colour to mark hight changes.

I've learned it by remvoing all paint from a area and then repaint and compaire it whit the old one.

How did you remove the paint? I have no shading at the moment.

You remove Vertex shading by setting the colors as high as they will go (something like 256 256 256) and painting over it.

Ok, here's not what do to:

1) Never EVER use brush size 'one' (1) when using vertex shading. It looks horible. Using a larger brusg like 2 will make your roads look more roundish.

2) Never EVER use bold colors, like red or green. These just look aweful. Use browns and blacks and nice earthly tones to shade.

well my point of use vertex shading ... i always change ... i like to paint and add a weird touch to the lands .... u can really transform a boring forest in to a faery tale's one adding coloured lights and coloured vertexshading ...of course judgement need to be used on this ....as noirg said to cartoonish colours won't fit well ... but natural ones do and sometimes u can increase the doing for charme purpouse the lands will look always different and various ... no more boring shades

bethesda uses too vertex colours but on a faded scale then me they use for example dark brown for shadows on dirty terrain and green for grasslands ... other times gray is used .. never a full black .. that could be used to make fake shadows of dark places

anyway i use also several degrees of a colour to mege better and don't look out of place with the ones that don't use ... always fade it when u mix with other areas that don't use ... i use also in water in combination with coloured lights ... this increases the drama or the feeling u want to give ... also remember that in the game the colours result more rounded down so a colour that is brilliant in tescs will look more natural in the game ..

the only rule is to use judgement and aestetical sence...
