Provincial themes

Post by Macar »

I had this idea...

I think it would be cool if we had a musical theme to represent each province. I can imagine also having a trailer for each province, featuring that theme.

The most relevent one of course would be a hammerfell theme. I was thinking that our resident composers could all try thier hand at it and then we could have a vote.

I guess the main problem with this idea is that we dont have a lot of people composing...

A Question

Post by Hayden »

Would there be any variance in the instrument used, or would they be the same instruments just playing different songs?

I think it would be neat if each region had its own set of instuments, but that's just an idea and hardly seems fiesable ;)

There was actualy a lengthy discussion of that idea here: http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewtopic.php?p=166530 But, yes, it would be nice to incorperate ethnic instruments. However, keeping it in an orchestral format will keep a sense of continuity.

Why is it that music discussion never actually seems to go on in the S+M forum?

I started the province music discussion in the S&M forum I think, but when AFFA joined s/he didnt have access there at first, and started a seperate thread :).

I think its a cool idea Macar, one I'd love to see come to fruition. Could have kinda like a weekly/fournightly composition group (similar in concept to the WSG?).

Being the dope I am and buying the Oblivion soundtrack, it turns out that they took bits of the morrowind melodies and recombined/remixed them into different melodies, while there are some unique ones too. We could do that with province specific instruments.

Sorry, I guess I should have put it here. I though I might get more response elsewhere.

As for the weekly composition group; while it's a cool idea I dont think it would work. Most non-professionals cant produce quality music on-demand. It's too time consuming, and most of the time you need to be "inspired".

I know we have discussed regional styles before, and I think everyone agrees on using different ethnic styles for different provinces. The idea I was proposing in this thread is having a "contest" to pick the main theme for each province as we come to it.

Most of the music we make should be ambient, without a strong or developed theme. The music in MW conforms to this, the only tune that sticks with you is the title-theme. I think we should have a title theme for each province and the rest should be ambient.

Was he working on a theme? I thought he was doing explore stuff. Anyway, I'd like to try my hand at it as well. Though if it comes to a contest, I'm shure he'd win.

I'll have a good chunk of time to work on it soon. Wednesday is the last day of class before spring break. Till then I'm too busy to compose.

Okay, here's what I've been working on. I think you'll recognise the begining. Also, you may recognise the theme, I had posted another version of this in my thread, but it was totaly different then. Please, share your thoughts.

It was nice to hear a piece from Dragonfly's theme at the beginning... really brought back memories. ;) Its interesting how the song moves away from a more Imperial theme at the beginning towards Yokudan at the end.

Has it been confirmed and tested that we can have custom music activate on a Region by Region basis? In Morrowind I remember that there was no regional control.. it was more of just dumping it all in a directory and letting it play through every file.

While we're on the subject dragonfly....

His song is going to be in TR: hammerfell isn't it? Would be a shame to keep that behind.

BTW, I do a lot of customizing on the piano and keyboard, so I would love to create music but I don't have equipment for it. Also a big shame :(

Thanks for the good words all. I'm currently working on stirk music, so this track has been put on hold. I think it would be nice to work the Tamriel theme into it a little more, I'm just not shure where. I might find a place.

Morden hit it on the head. I was going for the modern hamerfell in the begining (It's quite similar to the OB theme). Then I take it into the desert and get yokudan in the house. I was hoping that someday someone might be inspired to make a trailer to this track...

In the editor it looks like you can have default(explore) dungeon and public(towns and houses)

I've been looking around and haven't found anything to create new types, but it might be folder dependant like with the other files as stalker mentioned.

There was a script function in Morrowind to allow for songs to be activated. It was planned to use this to play area-specific music. Unfortunately, the function was bugged (things alwayed played at full volume)
As long as this bug is fixed for OBscript, regional music should be just fine and dandy.

Somebody should check if this function is fixed.
