Do you have enough RAM? Latest video drivers? Sporadic spread of rash and itching? Err... ignore the last one...
Playable factions are: Fighters, Mage, and Theives guilds, the Dark Brotherhood, and the Arena, if you call that a guild.

There seem to also be minor factions, such as The Knight of the White Stallion. (start that one in Leyawiin)

Oh, and yes, I got mine today! I'm reading the pocket guide as I speak. (Er, type) Can't wait to go home and install it! I'm pretty sure my comp will run it at around medium settings, at least until I recieve my new Vid card... And I'm buying extra Ram just for the heck of it.

Luckily, my computer met all the specs. You can imagine the happiness I felt after it auto-detected my video settings and said, "You're video settings have been set to high quality."
I've also already read the new PGE from beggining to end, and is it just me or was Bethesda purposely directing all that information at us? All the details and specifics we need for Hammerfell to eliminate most of the unknowingness.
Currently all I've managed to do is complete two main quests and join the Theives Guild, but I'm having a blast. Oblivion is like an orgasm in my eyes.
In other news, the way creatures are made will be more fun in some cases. They now chose from a model list for different parts of the body. For a lot of creatures, like bears and boars, this doesn't make a difference because either they don't have any peices they don't need or because they only have two different types.
That said, zombies are a great (if darkly amusing and kind of gross) example of how the modularity can work. There are two different models for each part of their body, and their bodies are broken up into each leg, each side of the torso, each arm, each hand, and each head. Not only does this allow for a whole bunch of full-bodied zombies, you can have none of say the right arm or the head, and they will be without either the right arm or the head.
I can think of one creature this would really be useful for. The centurions. While spider centurion things clearly can't be in the same section as the others, we could break up lower bodies, torsoes, arms, and heads and have a metric kind of buttload of different centurions.
This is a minor quest spoiler, but a MASSIVE lore dump.
We now know what the Hist are.
In a Fighter's Guild quest, you are infiltrating the Blackwood Company, which has been muscling out the Fighter's Guild. When you go undercover and do a quest for them (killing goblins), they talk to you about their "strange methods." They require you to drink a vial of Hist Sap.
The Hist Sap has no noticable side effects on stats or anything. You go to the village, slaughter the goblins outside, and find the goblins in the shacks, which strangely put up no resistance. As it turns out, the Hist Sap makes you think that every living thing (besides your fellow Blackwood Company fighters, who are also under the influence of the Sap) is a goblin, and you end up slaughtering innocent people.
Basically, the Hist Sap is a powerful narcotic, which combines the effects of LSD and PCP. You go berserk, killing everyone in sight.
You wake up in a daze, and are told to find out where the Hist Sap came from. You slaughter your way into the Blackwood Company basement, and find the bombshell: a Hist Tree hooked up to some strangely Dwemer-looking machine, that was harvesting its sap. It's just a tree. Apparently the Argonians use the sap from the tree as a type or spiritual hallucinogenic, much the way the Khajiit use Moon Sugar. The Hist would be central to a shamanistic tribal society, but are not intelligent.

Your GPU is the problem. The 9200 isn't supported for Oblivion.

100 out of 10 Thrassian judges agree, Oblivion beats the pants of Morrowind. I'm sure I met a gay man in the Imperial City and there's a woman in Skingrad who rants about how she hates the gods. I haven't even gotten into the game that much, but everyone has personality whether there's a quest attatched or not.
Has anyone else done the paranoia quest? I only talked to the first lady (who I think actually had a crush on him )and then slept through the days for the others. I told him they weren't spying on him. What if you tell him they are?

Hmm... personally, I dislike the amount of spoilers. I think we can word our way around giving out spoiling quest information while still asking for help, giving advice, or otherwise saying 'ZOMGOBROCKSURSOCKS!'
Like Sload, for instance. Yes, Sload, I did do that quest, just the opposite of what you describe, actually. You'd have received one of two different outcomes that would be very different from what I believe you brought about, I believe, and they would both be quite entertaining, indeed.
See? That wasn't so hard... I know everyone's excited, and we all want to know things and tell secrets, but some don't have the game yet. Please don't spoil things for them before they have the game.
And no, I'm not ragging on one particular person either... Except maybe Dexter...

Dexter wrote:But since you're the Arena grand champion, I could use some advice. I'm fighting those three Argonian slaves, and can't beat them. because it is simply too much for me to fight off three opponents at once in an open area with no cover. Especially when two of them are unarmed, and therefore damage your fatigue (getting knocked down is a bitch when there are three people beating on you). What'd you do to beat them?
That was definately one of the harder fights, i had a whole pile of healing potions (which is what i'd spent most of my money on) and block most of the time. Blocking doesn't always save you though and I had to do that battle like 4 or 5 times before i finally won. The trick is to try and separate them if you can, but it doesn't always work, and side step while you are striking, this seems to do more damage.
The GeForce FX 5200 video card/GPU/graphics card WILL NOT run Oblivion. PERIOD.
Sorry, but it has been confirmed by countless sources, and is NOT listed as a playable version. See, when Bethesda says 'FX series', they don't mean the whole thing, because it's not a series. It's a set. The only subseries supported is the FX Performance subseries. (ie 5500+ )

Anyone heard of it?

YOU ARE WRONG haplo, my friend as a GeForce FX 5200 and after downloading the beta drivers released on the march 22 at nvidia site (the ones that are opitmised for Oblivion, you can find them under "beta drivers") he made it to play the game... slow... but made it. And it look cool as hell.
I said that Geforce FX 5200 doesn't run it because Haplo and Sload told it in IRC

REGARDLESS of whether or not that card will run Oblivion is MOOT. This is not the thread for that discussion. Take it to the "Will My Computer Run Oblivion" thread or something, PLEASE.
On another note, I recently put two and two together. I had heard talk about someone called "City Swimmer" in one of the towns. I later was walking along, and turned a corner to see a guard bent over a dead body. I went to investigate, and found out that this person was, in fact, City Swimmer. Checking their corpse, I found the reason the guard killed him: he had stolen bread. I investigated further, and found PLENTY of food in City Swimmer's house, so this didn't make sense at all...
Later on, however, I met an Argonian in the same town, who, once I convinced him that I was his friend, told me of his hobby; he likes to break into peoples houses, and take their stuff, and place it in their containers. So they think its stolen, but its only just moved.
I can't be certain about it, but I think this is what happened to poor City Swimmer. Radiant enough to steal food, not Radiant enough to check ALL of his containers.
That, or there was some quest in there that I missed that explains it in another way, and the two are unrelated...

Well well my computer is currently kaput but I will be getting it fixed for this game, and Id like to come back (if you will have me...)
Many of my friends have this game and im very interested in getting it, but modding is where my heart is really.
Upon the hist tree subject...Dex, read Aldous Huxley's 'The Doors of Perception'.

This will put the whole Hist tree thing in perspective. My own personal belief paradigm is based on this book.
Cant wait!
Jale! The lore guy! Wow, it's great to see an older member back. I hope you stick around, we'll need lore. Lots of new things going on here at TR, Showcase, Wsgs, Closed project, perhaps even new management, you've been gone awhile. Anyhow, good to see you.

Well its actually 100 out of 10 intelligent thrassian judges agree oblivion beats the pants off morrowind . There are a thousand thrassian judges without brains saying it sucks. Unlike they rant, Radiant AI is actually pretty good, sure they're not comparable to real people, but it beats the pants off any RPG in existance.

Ive scrubbed up my drawing skills and am currently working on a nice little pretty concept of Orsinium. Might not be that helpful but its just something to ease me back in.
Well I've been playing the game for like 60 hours now and here's what I think of it.
The graphics engine is of course the major change since Morrowind. I can't really say much about it because I'm playing on a FX5900 card so I've got all settings really low. Even on this card however, the distant land looks great though I feel the border between non-distant land and distant land is way too obvious, especially when you're looking down from a hill. This is actually one of the few lacking things I found in the graphics, all other things look great even with settings on low.
The quests are more involving and have more depth than Morrowind's but I feel they're a bit too hard to find. In Morrowind they just came right at you in some way and it was easier too pick up on rumours and such. I get the feeling there are much, much less quests in Oblivion and that I won't be finding new ones for months or even years to come, as is the case in Morrowind. However, I think this also has to do with the limited dialogue in Oblivion. Because it's all spoken, most NPCs don't have more than three topics. So they don't have as much information and you don't get the feeling there's a tons of things you'll have to find out to understand what exactly everyone's talking about. This is one of my greatest disappointments because I loved the huge amount of dialogue on NPCs in Morrowind.
There's much less cultural and geographical diversity than there was in Morrowind. It's all more of a grey area with a few differences but mainly I still really haven't found the conflict that was so obvious in Morrowind. Like the 3 Great Houses, the Camonna Tong, the Empire vs. the xenofobic Dunmer and so on. In Oblivion it's more like us against Oblivion invasion, which is just less atmospheric.
The interiors and exteriors are, on the other hand, more atmospheric than Morrowind's. The way sound and music are used is much better and creates more contrast between the shabby shacks, a lush forest or a gloomy dungeon. Morrowind lacked good use of (ambient) sounds and Oblivion really does use it a lot better.
Combat, stealth and magic have all improved. No need to further comment on that. Leveling however is easier and I get the feeling characters grow into duplicates of each other even easier than they did in Morrowind. There are less skills and either one of the three specialisations can really be used by any characters with a tiny bit of practice. It all seems to me that, concerning magic and combat, this is almost more of an action game with an RPG element than vice versa. The combat really doesn't change in difficulty as you level up; if anything, it gets harder. For other things besides combat and magic, it's very much true to Morrowind's style though. The open-ended, free to do what you want and hugely immersive gameplay is still there as before.
If I were to compare it to how I thought about Morrowind after about this much of playing time, I'd say Morrowind looked better to me. However, if I don't look at Morrowind and look at Oblivion as a stand alone game I see a unique, huge game with stunning graphics that'd be a must-have for anyone that even remotely enjoys games. And on top of that, I see huge potential for Tamriel Rebuilt. The largest lack of Oblivion to me is a shortage of quests, diversity and dialogue. That is where mods chime in and Tamriel Rebuilt can be that mod to kick this games butt into perfection and shove Morrowind to my nr. 2 spot of best games ever. The engine sure is up to TR's goal of recreating Tamriel, unlike Morrowind's, and the game sure makes me feel like passing over the mountains into Hammerfell or Skyrim and finally see all of Tamriel in its glory.
My simple conclusion is that it kicks ass and I spent too much time giving my first impression of the game while I could have spent it playing. It's addictive and rocks, period. Now just a bit of patience for that GeForce7900 GT to come in. Should be saturday. *drools*
I did a bit of modding here a year or so ago, and i'm wondering if there is an "official" word on whether or TR will shift to the new CS. I've already made a few new dungeons just for fun, and it seems like most of TR could be imported into the new CS. It's so much more powerful and user-friendly I've already fallen in love with it....
And go here:http://www.elderscrolls.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=314333
You can see that the landmass present in the game is about 5 times the amount that is actually taken up by Cyrodill! My mouth is watering already for the potential.
Oh, and all you people with the NVIDIA card problems, you can disable shader 2.0 support in the Oblivion .INI file... it will fix 99% of your problems.
1. There are no dwemer ruins in Cyrodiil (Atleast thats what PoHa! Told me). The homeland of the dwemer is and always will be Morrowind, though some of them moved to Hammerfell, because they didn't like the allyance between the Chimer and the Dwemer (According to the PGE).
Dunno about the other 2 things Don't have Oblivion yet.

Alot of other people say this, but I disagree. I seem to find quests everywhere, and everytime I finish one I run into another NPC that gives me one.
But yes, the quests are alot deeper than Morrowind's.

I agree, there is little more in terms of depth. But the animations are a lot better than I thought they'd be judging by the preview videos. So we're in front of a problem, I think.
Just like in Half Life 2 there are many animation sets that were created just for the show. The alchemist that plays with his vials, the farmer that harvests, and so on. Won't Hammerfell require a couple of these? I'll not talk about the animals, they move in a very realistic way. This will be a real pain in our rear.
Plus the flora animations...
And last but definetely not least, the shadows. They play a much more important role now and imo need to be included with every new beast and small plant. I'm just guessing here, but I think that the game does not calculate an object's dimensions in order to automatically project its shadow, right? So shadows need to be made by the modders.
Shadows and animations make me a bit worried, can we really create Hammerfell to Oblivion's standards?
