PoHa!'s Concept Artymajig

Post by PoHa! »

Hey guys!

I've been working on this pic for some time, and I wanted some creative feedback. Its not exactly TR useable, but I plan on eventually posting some more concept art here, so I thought I'd keep it all in one place.

Further, my scanner was too damn small for this pic, so I eventually scanned the poor thing 6 times, and pieced it together as best I could. So that explains the lines, and some of the dark/light inconsistencies.

Like I said, I'd like some feedback on this. While I appreciate "That looks really swell, PoHa!" that's kinda what I've already heard from people around here that's seen it. So post as such if you really want to, but know that it won't help me, either.

I decided it was too big to fit in a little thread, so I've linked it:

Thanks for any comments! :P

Wow, PoHa! I must say that's really incredible! Such wonderful play of shadows in each of the detailed crevasses on it's face! What medium did you use (if it was something other than pencils, I'd love to know)?

It's very lovely texture, so much so you can identify straight away exactly how it'd feel. Visual texture like that is something that many have trouble attaining (including myself)

I'm guessing chalk on black paper, am I right? If that's white paper... that would have taken a loooong time. Great texturing!

My only crit, and this is realy splitting hairs, is that the thing on the bottom of his chin kind of looks like hair, I'm assuming that's not what you were going for. It's just not textured as well. The rest of the pic I feel like I could reach out and touch.

Thanks, Macar and Lutemoth.

Used charcoal on white paper, actually. I smudged the entire paper black (or rather, a dark grey) and erased out the highlights and darkened the darker spots. "Erase-out" method, I believe is what its called.

The "fin-thing" on the bottom looks less like hair in the real drawing, I think, though it should be darker, after looking at it again... actually, does anyone else think that that looks like hair? I'm afraid I don't see it, but it could be my bias, because I know what I think it is, or something to that affect.

Also, something I forgot to put in the first post, is that this is a WIP (you'll notice the vague attempt at a background with the blurry mountains and whatnot), so, if you feel that something looks odd, or that something just outright needs to be changed, tell me, that's what I posted it for :).

Whoa! That is fantastic. That's a work of art, truthfully. Besides that, I like the concept of such a creature. Well, you definitely need to follow this up with more stuff.

It appears that PoHa! has a secret talent!
I must say, that picture is absolutely stunning. PoHa, you should consider drawing in the WSG sometimes :D

The part under the chin didn't look like hair to me at all until I read the posts here, but now that I look at it again I can see how it could be viewed as such. I don't think it looks bad but I'm no art critic (though i'm utterly in love with dragons). I think it's a beautiful concept, and there isn't really a lot about it that I would see as being worth while changing.

I thought that the scale hair thingy down there was part of the background... But indeed you have a talent there :D

Thanks guys (and gal) for the feedback on my dragon pic; I appreciate it :).

I want to do a WSG, but they seem to always be structured architecture (or at least they have been when I've actually had time to try my hand at one) which I just don't like to draw; call me crazy.

I'm working on a dog-sized lizard, as per Dexter's suggestion (IRC Channel), which I hope to scan and post sometime in the near future, so that this thread can actually be called a concept art thread

Great lizard! Probably good for the slightly wetter areas in Hammerfell, I wouldn't wanna crawl on my belly like that in the desert:).

I agree with Bard, this would be certainly at home along the coastline, perhaps even along some of the southern islands. Course, that's just my fancy of the creature

As for the lizard... I still don't get it. What about it makes it look so non-deserty? I haven't a clue.

Hmm... its been sooo long since I've done any drawings (outside of class). So today I did a few. Only one of which I'm happy with, because, quite frankly, I'm not good at architecture. But, here is the one that I DID manage to get a somewhat likeness to what I had intended:

A Dwemer CenturiZOMGn Head... from the side. This is based on an Assyrian drawing, and I was basically focusing on an idea for the beard.

Then I decided that we'll need some Dwemer architecture. I started drawing a tower, and based the design of it almost entirely off of the Oblivion Dwemer armor. Why? I have no freakin' clue. It seemed to make sense at the time, but I stopped before it got worse than it was...

As you can see, it was looking far too whimsical and...uh... creepy looking. Like Umpa Loompa architects go to Halloweentown. Or something along those lines.

Lastly, I drew a watchtower and a wall, which I think turned out decent, not great, but decent... and then I started a dome thing in the background, which, quite frankly, I didn't like.

Conclusion? PoHa! does not like to draw architecture, though he hopes that maybe some other people will see this and be inspired one way or another. Expect that he'll stick with things that aren't not un-architectural in the future... most probably.

Why haven't I noticed this update before? I like the centurion face, it brings the assyrian style that the dwemer have paralleled, and touches base with the concept if the dwemer had tried to create something in their image

Probably because you've been working at a factory pace on your own concepts. :D

As for marine animals... I don't know...
