retextureing

Post by Saibot »

I've recently been experimenting with retextureing via Nifscope and I have a few problems. When I assign a new texture to an object it doesn't work in the CS or the game, it's just black. the only way I can get it to work is if I use one of the stock Bethesda textures. Is anyone familiar enough with Nifscope to maybe tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Most of the stock textures have a 'normal map' assigned to them. In the alpha channel of that normal map is the 'specular map'. This controls the brightness of your texture... essentially.... if you have a normal map assigned to the model and it lacks a specular channel then your texture will appear black in the game I believe.

That would take a very long time to explain and i'm short on time ;) Essentially... if this is your problem... you can quick-fix it by just copying and pasting your image into the alpha channel of your normal map. I would strongly recommend researching the different types of texture maps used in oblivion. ESF is a good resource to start. People ask these questions every day.
