WSG#18: [A] The Hammerfell Arena

Post by Lutemoth »

[Atmospheric]WSG#18: The Hammerfell Arena.

Everyone is quite familiar with the popularity of the Arena. This installment should provide some great creativity in the differences of Redguard's warrior culture, as opposed to Cyrodiil.
(for those without Oblivion, reference images online are readily available. Ex.)

It shouldn't be difficult of a WSG, go wherever it takes you. However, consider these thoughts before all else.
  • -What armour are the combatants wearing? What are they weilding? How does the Redguard champion differ from the Empire's best?

-In what way is the Arena built? What does the architecture look like?

    - What of the Arena's patrons? What is the style of clothing? How many visitors have come to appreciate the sport?
This week's submissions:

The Hammerfell Arena wouldn't be that much differnt to the one in Cyrodil because a redguard established the one in Cyrodil

I suggest that arena combatants do not have any assigned armor and the grand champion should be harder than the grey prince.

And it's Gaiden Shinji who was a Reguard, not Agronak the Gray Prince.

I have to agree :P They were asstablished at different times, and have had time to evolve since they were asstablished. The IC arena was imperialised, akaviri-ised, and changed in general. And even if it was not, cretive freedom.

I envision the arena similar to the arena in the begginging of Gladiator (NOT the coloseum). I also think that the teams should be the city teams from arena... or similar.

I know what he said. It still is shitty reasoning.

Artists: Make it cool. Make it neat. Ignore what the Arena in Cyrodiil looks like and how they fight there and all that. Just do something awesome.

What always bothered me about arenas is the equality of the spectators, however this equality is quickly destroyed by taking a sharp edged figure for the arena shape like so:

The golden 1337 rich with gold can have their own loge at the highest points.

The Arenas in spain tend to flirt with moorishness. here's one from Barcelona:

When they start covering Hammerfell with Morden's 'happy little trees, who live there' you wish you hadn't. :)

Here is a terrible example:
(you may need some therapy after this).

http://www.wallcoo.com/paint/Bob_Ross_CSG/mxxx01/bob_ross_csg001_mountain_retreat.jpg

His show was even on TRT (Turkish television), which I think is situated about as low as bad taste can go.

The Joy of Painting was so unbelievably bad, that I feel like hitting myself because I have ever watched it.

What are you talking about? The Joy of Painting was the most awesome show EVER!

And they're making a videogame for it.

Arright, arright, save this thread for artwork. Despite how compelling Bob Ross is, he has yet to contribute a piece yet.. When he does, this topic can resume

Note: His death in 1995 may delay his contribution slightly. ~~ Sload

Additional Note: I'm well aware, but I'm not going to let that misfortune discourage the Ross from doing so. ~~ Lute

It would be easier if we knew what the arcitecture for everywhere else was going to look like so that we had something to base this on.

In that case, let someone teach me how to model so that I can help avoid this.

Instead of suggesting, could please, pleaaase, somebody draw?... I mean, it's the WSG... *Moan*

Here. Hope it gets used. I used the Osaka Dome in Japan as a starting point and added Arab qualities. I also put a hint of Kragen architecture on the roofing.

The arena would be open air, the dark isn't exactly the best fighting place...

I'll have a few fighter's and arena designs for this one...

Sorry, I would contribute and I hope to, but as I sat down to draw, I got stuck. My concept is the same: Little or no armour in the legs, very flexible armour above and some sort of helm, the helm is my main problem, really, as so far I can only think of a roman Gladiator's helm. :( I have however made one suit of armour that I might post, though it looks rather strange...

What about having one of those round top-openings?

This with the painting area open to the sky.

Yeah, there could be slits in the dome and everything. It would function while looking cool in the process.

It's called an oculus.

It would make sense as some of these arenas could be near the desert (harsh enviroment battling arena) were sandstorms can roll up and over suddenly

I've had a rather naughty idea!

I like the oculus and the huge dome, but creating a solid dome over the width of the arena is a rather complicated affair.

I've solved this by substituting the dome with a pneumatic structure much like an inflatable matress. The rings would be filled with heated air (hence the furnaces on the beginning), so the structure would function like a stack of inflated inner car tyres.

These structures are also used in real life for these kind of purposes.

I really like the interior with an open ceiling idea, especially if it has artwork of different Redguard heros on the ceilings.

I think he meant building, as opposed to modelling.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pantheon%2C_Rome#Structure
Current one built in CE 125 (see above the linked location).

Would it work to have this as an exterior world? Or would it be easier to make it interior, and simulate the weather?

It would be easier as an exterior, because that way we wouldn't have to make a fake sky. It'd be it's own worldspace, TrMapNumberSentinelArena or whatever. There would be no percipitation or fog type weather while in the Arena, as then it would go through the roof.
