Abra Katabra...
I've been thinking of spells, and though the current variety is great there are always some more to add. Here are my suggestions as to what could be added to Hammerfell mages' spell lists. Except of a couple the rest should be easy to add, and non seems to me as lore-breaking. Check them out:
School: Destruction
-------------------
Spell Name: Ring of Fire (Cast on Self)
Creates a ring of fire on the ground around the caster. As the caster moves, the ring moves with him. Anyone that crosses that ring suffers fire damage. The caster receives no shield bonus.
Possible stronger variation: Ring of Flames (Cast on Self)
Spell Name: Ring of Ice (Cast on Self)
Creates a ring of iceballs around the caster, above ground. As the caster moves, the ring moves with him. Anyone that crosses that ring suffers frost damage. The caster receives no shield bonus.
Possible stronger variation: Ring of Frost (Cast on Self)
Spell Name: Ring of Lightning (Cast on Self)
Creates a ring of lightning bolts around the caster, above ground. As the caster moves, the ring moves with him. Anyone that crosses that ring suffers lightning damage. The caster receives no shield bonus.
Possible stronger variation: Ring of Thunder (Cast on Self)
Spell Name: Redguard's Rage (Cast on Target)
Unique/rare spell. The caster emits a spectral swinging scimitar that hits the target.
Possible stronger variation: Redguard's Fury (Cast on Target)
School: Alteration
------------------
Spell Name: Thrust (Cast on Target)
Creates a fist-shaped bolt that causes the target to fall on the ground, exactly like a succesful power attack. The target suffers no damage of any kind.
Possible weaker variation: Push (Cast on Touch)
Possible stronger variation: Thrust Wave (Cast on Target)
School: Conjuration
-------------------
Spell Name: Summon Frostmere/Shockmere/Flamemere (Cast on Self)
Summons one of three spectral horses. All have the stats and attributes of the Cheydinhal black horse, but each has 100% resistance to the element that composes it.
This spell already exists as a mod. It is called 'Etheral horses', and although it is extremely rare for TR to use other modders' work, I see no lore issues with this, and it would be a great addition. Spectral camels anyone?
School: Mysticism
-----------------
Spell Name: Magicka Block (Cast on Target)
Prevents the target's magicka regeneration.
Possible weaker variation: Magicka Pause (Cast on Touch)
Possible stronger variation: Magicka Absence (Cast on Target)
Spell Name: Duplicate (Cast on Self)
Creates a copy of the caster with the stats the caster had while duplicating. The 'copy' focuses on the same opponent as the caster and will execute the exact same moves until vanished or killed. It looks like summoning but it's actually mere magicka manipulation, that's why I put it under this school.
Spell Name: Massive Soul Trap (Cast on Target)
Soul trap all opponents in a small radius.
Spell Name: Detect Key (Cast on Self)
Name says it all, a useful Morrowind flashback.
Spell Name: Detect Enchantment (Cast on Self)
Don't tell me there weren't times you wished for it.

They would all (except the soul trap and stunted magicka ones for which effects already exist) involve heavy scripting, especially the magical double one. I don't know if it's possible to get and change facegen info by script, and how else are we going to create a double of the caster?
By the way, an enchantment from Morrowind that should be easy to recreate in Oblivion: the various jinkblades (paralysis for a few seconds on strike).

I know very little about scripts, so I'll answer the 'caster's double' question. The idea about this comes from the 14th level of the 1st Tomb Raider where you had an alien twin that performed the exact same moves with the player and you had to kill it in order to proceed (c'mon someone has to have played this). I don't suggest that the copy is identical, just a shining purple figure with the appropriate heightand shape.
I would suggest that Duplicate be a either under conjuration or Illusion, not Mysticism. They all seem pretty interesting though.
The "Ring of..." spells may be the most difficult to do. I've still not had a chance to really delve into scripting, but I think they all would need a target to hit, and a place of origin. There may be some work-around I'm not thinking of though.

How about an area effect cast on player that lasts a certain duration, but also apply a 100% resistance to the player?
A fire effect, in a ring shaped area aournd the player, damamges enemies that egt within it but not the player, voila!

Orix hacked in my mind! As I say in the description, 'Cast on Self' mi hermanos. Glad to see they're not hard to make, but to confess the truth: I put 'Duplicate' under Mysticism school because its variety of spells has decreased way too much, most of what was previously there have now been transfered under Restoration. So I tried to enrich this school in any way possible.
P.S. To define the Restoration's nature and purpose is to simply say the word itself. But the definition of Mysticism is manipulation of magicka itself. So, when you absorb something, it should be a mysticistic act, shouldn't it?

Yea, Fable might have that one copyrighted...Spell Name: Redguard's Rage (Cast on Target)
Unique/rare spell. The caster emits a spectral swinging scimitar that hits the target.
Possible stronger variation: Redguard's Fury (Cast on Target)
Anyways, awsome ideas, especially the ring ones, remind me of the Nova attacks in Diablo...
Dessert Graveyard
Its a similar idea, but I doubt they copyrighted it. Thats like saying magic fireballs were copyrighted by some D&D guy or something .Silverwood wrote:Yea, Fable might have that one copyrighted...Spell Name: Redguard's Rage (Cast on Target)

And the idea is semi-based on lore, the Shehai can summon somewhat quasi-magic weapons, but I think they'd usually wield them themselves rather than go to the toruble of controlling it on its own.
Although the idea does also remind of of Prince A'Tor's soul, embed in his sword in Redguard, which comes alive and saves the day by stabbing the bad guy.

Actually, there's one line that does exactly that. Something along the lines of SetActorValue. Making it act the same would be more difficult.Gez wrote:..especially the magical double one. I wouldn't say it wasn't TR's tactic! We add content that includes spells, as much as it does books, npcs, quests, maps, items etc. In fact I'd be all for new spell effects, and long as they remain balanced in accordance with what Beth have created, its fine... I think.El Scumbago wrote:I suppose you can't have a complete clone, but the mod adds the idea I've posted earlier in this thread. I wonder, even though it's not a usual TR tactic, could we add some spells, like this or PJ's ones, in Hammerfell? I suppose we'd want to use some new spells anyway.
I think the trouble is knowing what is suitable or not. There's little lore against adding new spells, but then again, you could say the same about weapons, such as spears...
PJ has made some amazing spells. Infact, it would be awesome if I could convince him to have a stab at the Shadow Magic spells, as he knows his stuff and is willing to experiment. I may send him a PM or something.

Regarding the Ring of $Whatever spells, could you have a scripted Cast on Self spell that causes an area-effect spell to be cast straight down?
EDIT: Meant to mention that I'm pretty sure that Self spells cannot have areas. Going to check that.
EDIT2: Yep, the Area box is grayed out.
If a spell cannot be made to target xyz or angle coordinates, another option would be to create an invisible object directly under the caster, and make the caster target it.

EDIT3: Stupid un-underlined links.
