Who, what and probably when

Post by Scott MacDonald »

Yah I was wondering if there is a race like the Scots or even the... irish... Anywho I was wondering what part of Tamriel they are from and if the music is Scottish or Celtic style, and how far into the development be when work starts on em.

The Nords are probably the closest thing you'll get to the Celtic type...

You're in the wrong thread though, how is this TR related?

'TR Related Discusion' is a very broad description. This falls under it as good as any.

The words Scottish and Irish do not ever apply to anyone in Tamriel, with the possible exception of Sheogorath.

The Nords are more like those arctic fish with anti-freeze in their bodies.

The Nords are more Celtic than the Brentons. Period.

Bretons are a cross-breed of Imperials and Elves, assuming the lore hasn't changed.

Nords are very viking-like. But the vikings were heavily influenced by celtic culture.

Scott, are you asking this in reference to their musical culture? I know you've been doing music lately.

Nords were influenced (later in their history) by the Celtic culture, which was also the culture of Bretons. Celtic culture was based on paganistic beliefs concerning Mother Earth and on the Latin culture.

So, everything's Latin at the end. I recall that the first name of the city that is now London, was Second Rome, and was founded by members of the Brutii family.

Heh, you're absolutely right, it's not a rare thing for us to get carried away. But as Gez already said, Bretons are (obviously) the closest thing to Scottish and Irish people.
This might not be very obvious in Oblivion, but you will certainly observe it in Morrowind.

My big words might not've made it clear, but I hate people saying that they're like such-and-such.

Why? Because the only reason they look like such and such is either:
  • 1. You just don't know enough about them.

    2. Whoever's writing the lore for them has failed. Unequivicably.
At the present time, it's 1. Universally. Except maybe the Imperials, but that's Oblivion.

It's simple: at the moment, we don't know much about anyone except the Imperials and Dunmer. Daggerfall was intentionally somewhat cliché, but that was 10 years ago. The Imperials are a somewhat sucky example (being from Oblivion and all), but the Dunmer are an excellent one.

Tell me, what real-world culture do the Dunmer resemble? This question is rhetorical. I've seen it answered at least 50 times, and I've seen nearly as many answers. They're America, they're Russia, they're Europe, they're Asia, they're basically any culture in history. Because they're their own culture. They're the Dunmer. They've got things in common with a lot of cultures, but it's so mixed and matched and also purely invented that they're unique. And that's how every race should be.

Okay, okay, since all of you hopefully think for yourselves, at least one of you must've come to the rather simple conclusion: So what? Why is this a big deal? The answer is simple. By equating them with a single culture, or even a small group of them, the races become more and more synonymous with these cultures in our minds. We begin to see our Nords in horned helmets and our Redguards in turbans.* This should never happen. This has been the trend, as I've seen quite a few "OMG wich race is wat earth culture lol." The minute that this question is valid is the minute Tamriel is dead.

*Not to say that Redguards should never wear turbans.

I see what you are trying to say, by finding a simmilarity with a fictional race and real race, we tend to take from the real race to make the fictional race. Which in the end makes the fictional race just a modifyed version of the real race.

Indeed.

Also, there are no kilts in Tamriel- end of story.

I think MW's Imperial Skirt, or whatever its name is, might count.
(It's the one all the Imperial Guards wear)
