You don't. Not the good nif version. Plus, there are legal issues.

It's illegal to put a game's content in another. Generally you should import the nif in the program you're using and export it as an oblivion nif. As far as I remember Morrowind uses version 5.0.0.2 while Olbivion uses version 20.0.0.4 the same as Zoo Tycoon. You have to get both of the exporters. But nevermind. Don't be sad if this thread will get closed.

Edit: Oops. It seems Gez posted while I was still writing. Nevermind it's ilegal and that's enough.

We wouldn't want to do anything that was illegal. That would be...evil. We Telvanni are loyal subjects to the Empire.

The hypothetical evil person who did this would probably not be rewarded, as the poly count for MW is significantly lower. It would look like crap. Very angular crap, that is.

To be more precise, if you own both Morrowind and Oblivion, it's not illegal to transfer content from one to the other, for your own use. You own the right to do what you want with these games, as long as it's strictly for yourself only.

But you can't legally distribute content from a game, because you don't have the copyright on these content.

Technically, all mods that are partly based on assets from one game are illegal. Let say I distribute a retextured glass armor set, the meshes are still Bethesda's meshes, I don't have a copyright on them, I can't distribute them.

In practice, though, it's allowed, because the idea is that to use this retex, you'll still need the original game. It's still piracy, stricto sensus, but since everyone involved owns the game, it's tolerated.

That's why Bethesda cracks down on using Morrowind resources for Oblivion (or vice-versa), because then the mod-user may not own the resources that have been altered and that are being shared.

surely. it'd just be easier to export the .obj file (from the morrowind mesh) in nifskope... and put in into an oblivion nif file (using Nifskope again) then just associate the textures' again. (morrowid textures usually 128x128 so fine if u dnt mind a quality drop but better if u re-did the texture).

if its illegal to do this, why is everyone telling him how to do it? and shouldn't the suggestions on how to break the law be edited out?

ah, it is only illegal if you try and publish anything from one game as a 'mod' or otherwise for another. ie, releasing the siltstrider mesh with an oblivion mod.
if someone wants to do this for their own amusment then they can do, but it's not gonna be pretty with the low poly morrowind models and small textures.

Yup. It's a copyright issue. What's illegal is not to transfer them from one game to the other, it's to distribute the game's content.

It's allowed to distribute the game's content only as far as the downloaders will need to have bought the game anyway. Because otherwise modding would be too complicated, and an active modding scene adds value to a game. So, game companies tolerate this form of copyright infringement, and that's why you can distribute retextured Kagouti meshes for Morrowind.

Distributing the game's content in a way that let people who don't have it to play it anyway is not tolerated, however.

I think it was only me who did so but unless he posts the meshes on the internet then it's not ilegal. I hate to repeat myself or to repeat someone else's words.

As long as you don't tell him to publish this kind of work, you're 150% legal and free to tell him how to convert the meshes.

A guy in planet elder scrolls published the model of a bonemold helm. He made it from scratch to be legal, and it really looks great. If anyone's interested in Morrowind models, it's a good thing to check out.

i doubt it, you'd be better off using the standard .dds textures. there's a nice plug-in for photoshop that lets you convert everything to the right format.
