a little music

Post by saithan »

I recently purchased some new virtual instruments for my home studio. was rather impressed with the out of the box results.

I wrote this piece with halloween on my mind hence the harmonic minor harmonies.

I doubt the piece itself has much TR value but the instruments definatly do...
not bad realism for symphonic works.

while I'm familliar with classical writing I'm not fluent with ambient classical (classical guitar and ambient jazz is my forte).

any URLs or study materials out there for grasping techniques in ambient classical?

The "aaahhh" voices are a bit too loud. Maybe if you can smooth these a little more then it would be perfect for Hammerfell.

Please, but please make it a bit longer. I'm sure Macar will like this. I really do so. :)

Cheers!

I took your advice and lowered the voice tracks a little bit and added length to the piece taking it to 2:17 in total length.

I hope this is better or at least closer to your preferences.

Hey Saith. I like the sound of what you have so far. The physical quality is certainly high enough. And the tune is pretty pleasant.

The thing about the peice is that it's a little hard place- explore? dungeon? Also- the use of such prominant solo instruments (though they sound really nice) is not the norm for the tes games. However, we're not trying to clone thier music- so that's a moot point.

I hope you continue to post music.

I didn't think that tune was well suited but I wanted to demonstrate the instruments for orcestra/symphonic applications.

If I can use them to help the team in any way that is great.

in the mean time I am working on something more ambient maybe closer to town or explore. it has a long long way to go but here is what I have so far.

as I said before I'm not familliar with the genre so tips are helpful.

I replied to this post a while ago... But it seems to have dissapeared!

Well, I'll repeate what I said. You certainly have the right idea here. I really like the some of the samples- especialy the harp (or is it guitar) which is used very well. The only thing I have a problem with is the strings- they sound fine in on the longer notes- but when they play a moving part they sound odd. If you want- you can send me a midi and a recording of the peice without strings- and I think I could improve it. Otherwise though, It's a great peice.

I'm using 2 string ensamble sections a (chelli and viola)there and a third violin ensamble that comes in very lite.

then I have a small timpani and flute ensamble.

If you can explain what you find odd I'm sure I can fix it. These sound libraries ran me a little over $1200 there is flexability in configuring the modulation and tone. ATM i'm running everything default (out the box) state. and performing all the mixing from the tracks rather than the libraries themself.

Oh really?! Well then. The problem, in my mind is the "attack", some programs will call it other things like velocity, onset, or something else. That's what makes the instrument start quiet and get louder as you hold it. That swelling effect is really nice on a long chord. But when the strings move- they need to not do that- because it sound wierd. The part I'm specificaly talking about is the part where the strings were doubling the harp because the notes are shorter there. In other spots the slow attack is fine- so if the program lets you adjust it that way, just change it for the parts where the strings arent playing long chords.

I see exactly what you are saying (and I agree(thanks)).

yes the velosity was set for string momentum for / setting rather than -

Here is a remaster of the recording with adjusted velocity.

Keep in mind I'm a classic/jazz guitar player so I still have a lot to learn about keybaord and midi.

Sound nice- just the right level of ambience, and a pleasant tune. I really like where the peice goes at about 3 minutes (when the percussive instrument enters). In fact- I'd recomend splitting the peice into 2 seprate ones. I'd say it is long enough- since most explore tracks are a little over 2 minutes long. It has very nice deserty feel from there!
