Yeah, if this technique pans out really well, it helps put Goldmoor one step closer to completion, and gives us a lot of options for the other regions. We can streamline the process and have grass out of the way relatively quickly with each new region.

Based on this concept of Rihad, which is one of my all time favourite TR pieces:

May I propose to your harbor crane? Beautiful. Am I correct in assuming that that is mega-high poly, or is it usable?*Prays*

It currently sits at around 3k polygons, it was built with low-poly in mind. It still needs some fixing, but it will still be lower poly than your average zombie.

I so love that lighting effect! It blows my mind- looks so real. What is it called again? Sunlights or something?

Skylights, yeah, I never leave home without it. It makes my work look 700x better than it actually is. Invaluable!

It also makes them look 700x larger poly, which is great for concept modeling. How long does a render like that take?

I'm doing one right now, with a new dock and some changes to the crane, so when I post it here I'll also post how long it took to render with a skylight.

I'm also thinking about experimenting with skylights in texture baking. You can render an object with the skylight and have the soft shadows become part of the texture, so when it is viewed in game it will look better. The problem with that is that you can't turn it off at times of day, so you'll have an object with soft sun-cast shadows in the middle of night, or 300 feet under water.

Here we go:

Four minutes and five seconds to render that at 800x600.

I'm playing around with a new dock design. Anvil was supposedly a busy port city, but their dock for the most part looked like old boards held together by duct tape. I figure that because Rihad and Sentinel depend quite heavily upon naval trade, they will keep their docks in slightly better shape.

Another idea I toyed with was having a canopy on top of the crane, because it must be awfully hot and uncomfortable to turn those wheels in sun. I canned it, but it isn't hard to put back on.

I don't like the wood dock. Usually ports like this don't have them (see the concept).

I really love the crane though (kind of looks better without the canopy).

I agree, you see more of the intricacy without the canopy. Still, I imagine if you wanted to hop under there and have a look at how it works, it would be fun. Also, I don't know about functionality, but the wooden dock looks perfect to me.

Rendered with skylights because it makes me look good

That's what our beloved Rihad harbor is looking like right now. Still a few touch-ups to do before I start messing around with textures.

I honestly honestly cannot wait to play in Hammerfall. WOW. Eyeball, this is sensational. The little cube.... bollards, posts, whatever they are, are awesome, and the texture on them is excellent, and Just wow.

A question: Are the ships still enterable, like so they will have interiors? Or because they are rendered from scratch, are they unenterable? I honestly don't know being a having the technical brain power, of several comatosed bunnies.

EDIT: just noticed a lovely touch, that sunken ship is awesome.

Yeah the boats are going to exactly the same style as Cyrodiil's, except we're also going to model some ships of our own.

Pointer number 1: Kids, don't do this at home.

It's the very definition of frustrating monotony. I didn't mention that if I get too close to that crane, it crashes Oblivion.

Baby steps. I'm tweaking the nifs now.

Edit: Part of the problem being that when I exported the mesh it went from 8,800 faces (the harbor) to 33,000. I've got it back down in the 8,000's now. Going to test it to see if that affects anything.

Bump!

Like a K.I.S.S. reunion tour, you thought you had seen the last of me. Between switching jobs and taking care of my grandmother, I haven't had as much spare time as I would like. But I've bumped into a few of you online here and there, and the Tamrielic calling still flows through my veins, so here I am.

With my new job, I'm never really sure how much time I'll have; especially during the summer months, I'll be working quite a bit. I have a 7 week job lined up in August, and more small stuff between now and then. But I've missed things here.

First things first, I've got to share that cliff mesh now that Goldmoor is progressing. The texture might need some of Noir's loving attention. Also, the flat plane behind it will need to be synced up with whatever grass texture we use on the region around the cliff.

I also started work on a cave mesh for Goldmoor that I'm sure is going to be over-kill, but I had my computer away from home for a few days with no internet access and figured I'd just play around with it to brush up on my skills. It was more of a "draft" or an idea than anything.

edit:

Was my idea for a Goldmoor region cave; fairly narrow, a track of sand, dirt and rock that has been eroded by constantly running water. It was probably overkill for the Goldmoor region, I just started it to play around with things.

the cave mesh looks great, but im afraid it might be a bit over the top if we dont have anyone to finish it. if we do however, it will be the unique dungeon weve been lusting over.

Hello Eyeball. What's shakin'?

Is there a chance you could upload an archive filled all your WIP .max/.3ds files? It would be a shame to forever lose all the work you did last winter. Since you left we've been really encouraging people to upload WIP files.

Here is a rar of all the various odds and ends I managed to export, with various levels of success. Some, like the Rihad Harbor ship crane, seem to cause Oblivion to crash if you get too near them; I'm not sure what the workaround for that is yet.

I just heard from an old friend of mine that there may be a small (but funded) animation job opening near me. I'm excited at the possibility. :)

While I wait to hear more from the job, I've got some some time to myself for working on the 10000x things I started in my scatter-brained artistic splurges of creativity.

Wednesday or Thursday is when I'm hoping hearing from my contact. It looks like it could be a kind of cool job though.

Edit: Here's an updated "Ceramic Armor" from one of Lutemoth's concepts.
