Beautiful Vision, Can I Join?

Post by Rand Al'Thor »

Hey fellow older, wiser, and better modders! I was just passing by your website as Google told me that I could find better tutorials on how to use TESCS, well, better than the crappy one you get in the TESCS help section. As I just finished reading through Dragonsong's brilliant tutorial 'My First Room', I thought I might as well explore the site and see what else you had to offer. And boy, did you have a lot! I never knew that someone would have the dedication, the sheer audacity to even THINK of undertaking a project as big as this! However, when I was exploring the Morrowind GOTY edition CD, and I stumbled across TESCS, it really caught me by the scruff of the neck and roared in my ear 'FIND OUT WHO I AM AND USE ME!!' In other words it caught my imagination and so here I am saying how much I really admire your vision... but that's not enough. I want to be a part of the vision so I will do my best to cobble something something together and showcase it in the showcase section. And another thing about sections, wouldn't it be a good idea to have a section dedicated to Welcoming people? I mean a place where people can introduce themselves properly and feel properly ingratiated into the forum, instead of just sporadically cluttering the threads which must be annoying for you. But that's just an idea. Anyway, starting tonight, I will have a go at honing my skills and following Dragonsong's tutorials word for word whilst creating brilliant interiors! One problem though, when I bought the Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind GOTY edition, it said it had Morrowind, Bloodmoon, and Tribunal all on one disc, as well as TESCS. But a few months later, now, I can't seem to find meshes or textures that Dragonsong said I should find? He also said that I would get a message saying that TESCS cannot find the 'local disk' and that the local disc was the TESCS disc so, horror of horrors, I eventually got this message. I have TESCS installed but nothing! The disc is in the drive but no effect! And when I bought the game, it only had one disc, which is where the main game, the expansions, and TESCS are. This is kinda inmportant as Dragonsong's second tutorial 'My Second Room' requires access to the meshes and textures for me to proceed! Hopefully one of you has advice so I can start getting down to texturing and meshing stuff! Anyway, great to be here and hope to be a major contributor in the near-future.

Regards,
Rand Al'Thor

Ok, first of all, welcome to TR!

Right, it seems to me that your disk doesn't contain any of the assets that Dragonsong's tutorial assumes come with your copy aren't there. (The publishers probably just crammed eveything on in the form of the BSA files, the archived version)
Not to worry, there's ways around that. You can use BSA browser, to unpack the BSA files that are in your data files folder in order to individually select nifs, etc.

As far as the CS not finding the files it's looking for, I'm not sure but I suspect it may be fixed by simply going to your preferences and unchecking this option here:

Have fun, I look forward to seeing your showcase.

It is a while ago that I helped someone getting in the team, so I want to help you. Should you have any questions, you can always PM me. If you want to make an interior, I suggest you begin with making a small 3x2 velothi commoners house (which means 4 corners, an entrance and a wall piece), an ancestral tomb or a small cave. I will review it and help you become better. Your enthousiasm is great! I recognise some of it from back when I joined. If you want to model or learn textures, though, I can't help you much because I can't do that. Succes!

Thanks Ludovic for the advice, and everything seems to work; I looked through the data-files and found a shitload of textures and meshes, but I think I'll leave them alone for a while...
Thanks also to theviking, whose benevolent nature doesn't seem to match his 'ferocious' name! Anyway, I've PM'd you with a question that is really, really annoying (I'd call it worse, except there might be some overzealous moderators around that might not take too kindly to it!) problem! I've spent quite a bit of time honing my skills (and my curses) and have come up the the following attachments. Big problem, the one I was talking about earlier and PM'd the viking about, is that every time I save to the file I'm using, for example 'MyFirstCell.esp', TESCS won't save it because I'm using it already. So I said 'Duh! Overwrite it!', so I tried again and again, to no avail. Finally I give in and save it to a new file, for example 'MyFirstCellCell.esp'. Fine. Saved. P.C switched off. Hours pass. P.C switched back on. 'MyFirstCellCell.esp' loaded up. And lo and behold! It's f**ked up. Only bits and pieces are there, seemingly hanging in mid-air. So, hair all ripped out, teeth gnashed to Oblivion, and eyes re-attached to sockets, I close TESCS, reopen it, and load up both 'MyFirstCell.esp' and 'MyFirstCellCell.esp'. Hey! Everythings Ok! Escept... oh s**t. Half of everything is duplicated, and the duplicates are just on top and to the left or right of what they are f**king duplicating. So, taking a deep breath and putting down the hammer that just seemed to materialize out of thin air into my hand, I set about deleting the duplicates and restoring my rather grand first attempt at an interior cell. Once I've done that, I saved it. Same thing happens again, only this time, I expected it. 'Aha!' I said. 'Take that!'. And I saved my beautiful creation to yet another file, with a grand name to fit my grand room, 'The Zodiac Chamber.esp'. Smiling at my success, i close it down and turn off the computer, my love for it restored. A few hours later, I return to touch it up a little, add a few minor details, and generally fiddle with what looks best.
I load up 'The Zodiac Chamber.esp'... and, well, you know what happens next.
The cycle began anew.
HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!

To show that I'm not all mouth and no cojones however, I've added my esp files below for you to take a gander at. Be warned though, you have to upload them all at the same time to fully experience what I've created, cos the bitches never ovewrite. There may be a few duplicates but hey! Beauty doesn't count... it's what's on the inside that counts.... Yeah I know, I think that's bollocks too. Enjoy.

Welcome to TR!

Since you've submitted *.esp's, this thread will be moved to the Showcase soon I'm sure. I'm glad that you want to be a part of the project and are willing to learn the ropes you need to mod for the project. Don't burn yourself out or you'll lose your energy for this project. Slow and steady with a ton of dedication will get you far in this project.

While I'm here, I'd like to tell you that our Literature department would be more than happy to see a story or essay written by you. I see that your grasp of the English language is pretty good, and I'm sure you'd like the lore of the Elder Scrolls universe. Google The Imperial Library (til.gamingsource.net) to learn about the interesting history and mythos of Tamriel and beyond.

Most of all, though - welcome to Tamriel Rebuilt!

Your saving problem is a common one for newbies. Not to fear, it's easily solved.
The CS doesn't function in the same manner as normal document-creation programs.
Files can be:
-unloaded (no effect)
-loaded (you will be able to see them)
-active (all changes you make will be saved here)
What you have to do is set a file as active this means that all changes you do in that session will be saved to that esp. You can use the "combine loaded plugins" option to combine those plugins you provided to create a fully functional esp.
Try having a read of this tutorial.

Hold it! Don't move my thread yet! Hey, you! Put that down! I said don't move! Right. Now then.
theviking has just PM'd me with the solution to my long-winded problem and Ludovic has very kindly helped as well (By the way, what's the 'combine plugins' option? I can't see it anywhere!) , and I'm going to set about putting it into action as soon as I can and so, for that reason, don't take my esp files as the sum of my abilities! Look at them all you may, but a proper version will be along just as soon as I can manage it. However much I wish it was the case, Tamriel-Rebuilt isn't my job. Writing story-like posts isn't my job. Sitting on a numb behind in a cold room, staring at the Blue Screen Of Death, whilst trying to reattach my fingers with nothing but a bloodied needle, a spool with no thread to put through my needle and my teeth, isn't my job. After all this typing, I don't even remeber what my job is anymore. But more on that later.
To Nanu Ra, thanks for the advice. I'll try to put at least some restraint on my unbridled passion for the 'Beautiful Vision', but I can't make any promises! Thanks for the compliment on my English and the welcome, and I'll get round to the Imperial Library as soon as I can. One question though... If I do decide to have a go at book writing as well as interior making, how can I submit my ideas? Or more importantly, to whom?
And another thing, after having a look at other people posts on the forum, it seems that you have to say which game you're modding for so, just for the record, I'd like to declare my allegiance to Morrowind. Mostly because I can't afford a powerful enough computer. Let me tell you something though. If talent and passion and dedication was money, every single person here at Tamriel-Rebuilt would be millionaires. No, billionaires!
Ah, shoot. My fingers have fallen off again and I'm now typing with my tongue. Eew.

You can do work for both, though the more Morrowind the better, in my biased opinion.

As to literature, I believe you would just post an example in your Showcase, whenever you create one, or (less likelily (sp/real word?)) in the Literature forum, if you have access to that?

any work done before you are made modder belongs in the showcase. after you are promoted so to speak you will be able to make claims, anything not covered by claims -- this includes lit -- can simply be posted in the appropriate forum.

welcome, good to see so much enthusiasm ;)

Thanks, it's good to heard such compliments time to time.

And don't worry, we have a lot to do in MW, but your technical problem don't forbid you to wright books, quest, to draw concepts... for Oblivion.

Thanks for the comments everyone, and yes, I really should break up my posts to prevent crippling the modders of Tamriel Rebuilt. Oh dear. I seem to have revealed my evil plan! Never mind.
Last night, and most of today, I kept getting reminders of the wise words of Nanu Ra 'Don't burn yourself out or you'll lose your energy for this project. Slow and steady with a ton of dedication will get you far in this project.'

Unfortunately, I've ignored these wise words and dived headfirst into making an extravagant room. However, I've now lost the room I so painstakingly created, amongst other rooms that I left unfinished in my haste to find the perfect concept of a room. This was thanks to some genius's idea of uninstalling and re-installing TESCS and hoping that everything would turn out for the best. Yes, that genius was me. Round of applause. (applause interspersed with frequent boos and hacking coughs)

So thanks to an idea I got from Ludovic, I've decided to take a break from Tamriel-Rebuilt (I really should call it TR, but my inner conscience hates abbreviations), and download every single tutorial from Tamriel Rebuilt, following every single word and doing everything that they tell me to do. Hang on, I have to give you a break so here's a picture of some cute kittens:

Aww.
Back to business. So I'll be taking a break and I'll come back when I'm done with the tutorials and my showcase.
I'll be taking your advice and start by showcasing something small. I've got a few ideas of my own, but any more would be welcome. Keep in mind that I've only started though, so no massively hard ones! In the meantime though, have a look at my recent 'mistakes' and, if you can see through the mistakes, let me know what you think. Don't hold back.
One last thing. To Lady Nerevar, you said that any work done belongs in the showcase, but that I can't make a claim to it until after I'm promoted. Does this mean that other people can take credit for my work if I'm not promoted quickly enough? (cocks gun and aims it at encroaching invaders, intent on taking the bloody credit!)
See you around sometime soon anyways.
Regards,
Rand Al'Thor

Your stuff for the showcase is just 'dummy' material to show folks you know what you're doing. Once you're promoted, you gain access to the claims forum where you can claim an interior cell (or whatever) that TR actually needs to be built. So no one can claim your showcase work as it probably isn't going to be used for the mod. (Unless we really need ints. And FAST!)

For instance, being a quest bloke I created a relatively small quest for my showcase, which was reviewed to perfection and then just left because I had access to all the claiming forums and could thus get on with the work that actually needed doing. (Mouth quests/Mages Guild/Temple... that kind of thing)

Hope that makes things clearer. :)

Yes, they told their agent to tell me that they give you permission to use them in your forum signatures on other forums, so long as they get decent food and lodgings and a 10% share of profits that you may make from using them.

To the crab with the blood dribbling over his pincers, yes, I am aware (painfully so) that I'm am a, what would you call it? Oh yeah. N.o.b.o.d.y. But I'll overlook that and say that I didn't mean taking a break from Tamriel-Rebuilt, as actually 'taking a break from Tamriel-Rebuilt', more like just taking a break for myself because I was incredibly busy making up ideas for interiors that I could use and discarding them as they were deemed far too important for a purpose as lowly as showcasing, however noble it may seem. Yes. Instead I'll just 'take a break' and concentrate on learning from the tutorials and THEN I'll start on a proper showcase. Yes.
From what I've learned so far of quests and their making, it seems to me that- oh, hang on, I've realised that my post is getting a little long so here's a break:

Aww. Cute, aren't they?
Anyway, quests seem to be a lot of hard work, work done by endlessly typing in code in the correct 'syntax' and the right 'procedure'. While this may be a means to an end a.k.a. getting a great script with an in-depth storyline and fast-paced dialogue, isn't there anything that one might enjoy in scripting rather than having to look fowards to hours of coding to get a decent, flaw-free script?
I'm not having a go at the scripters or anything like that, but I'd love to be able to 'claim' a few great storylines of my own to add to Tamriel-Rebuilt in the future, amongst other things, and I want to know more before I decide to take scripting out of my circle of concentration for good.
Back to class then! (Tutorials I mean, not nursery, but then I could have fooled you, eh?!)

My main motivation when it comes to questing is just the fun of getting to help develop the (hopefully) memorable characters TR will introduce, and also just to take some of the pressure off these guys, who deserve all the break they can get.

Questing's also a bit weird: currently I've just been implementing quests (which includes dialogue etc.) rather than actually creating them, so I'm mildly constrained in how much of my own "story" I'm putting in, but I certainly get to put my own spin on characters and events.

If you have good ideas for quests, don't worry too much about how exactly to implement them. I personally think its a heck of a lot easier to script a quest than to come up with a good solid idea for a plot, but then again maybe that's just where my personal skills happen to lie. We need many quests to make the world seem as if it is alive, so we need a lot of small-scale stories that are nonetheless interesting and fun, and help give the player a feel for the environment and culture of the area beyond what we can do with just graphics. That, I think, is not so simple a task.

Thanks Bloodthirsty Crustacean and Zalzidrax for the information (Info, dammit, info!) and I feel a little clearer in my mind about scripting. However, I haven't got to the scripting part of my tutorials so I'll wait till then before I decide to go any further with scripting, but I'm pretty interested in Zalzidrax's notion of just suggesting a good plot idea and then letting somebody else implement it if they think it's any good too so, yeah, sounds pretty good to me.
Right. I've gotten about halfway through the tutorials on everything in TESCS and my progress is posted below in a nifty .esp file for my peers to download and review! However, I think that what's more important is the confidence I've gained during the last few days at TESCS and since I've gotten past most of the normal newbie problems with more than a little help from some great people here. Just want to say thanks for the help, and that i feel ready to create an underground world! (it'd have to be underground, since I haven't gotten onto to the exterior cell creating bit!)
Also, when I've done all the tutorials, I'd like some ideas from anybody here as to what could really show you my interior cell creating talents, as I really want to prove myself!

Hello again, and sorry for the massive delay but I've recently found that Nanu Ra's prediction that if I carry on with so much fire, I'd burn myself out, was correct. I'd burned myself out. So I'd continued on with the actual game, defeated Dagoth Ur, slayed Almalexia, and kicked the ass of a another god in Bloodmoon. Also, I'd completed my own personal quest to find my own full set of daedric armour without any help! Hooray! Now that I'm the most powerful person/god on Vvardenfell, Mournhold, and Solstheim, I've found that I'm ready to carry on with TESCS! Hooray!
I've created a nice tomb called 'Zenith of Nythonen-Raa', and created a unique blade as the prize. However, I've always had a notion of Having the blade floating in mid-air in the middle of a darkened chamber, a ray of light catching the blade as it slowly rotates on it's axis. I'd been thinking of how to do this, and thought of something along the lines of one of Dragonsong's tutorials, when he used 'MoveWorld Y-10
Timer - 3'
...to move a bed away to reveal a trapdoor underneath, so I thought 'Hey, if he used 'MoveWorld' to move something, then surely I can use something like 'RotateWorld' to rotate something. This was before I'd burned myself out.
When I was playing Morrowind, I had just defeated Dagoth Ur and was now making my way back to the surface of Red Mountain when a cut-scene appeared, with Azura saying stuff I couldn't understand because there were no subtitles, annoyingly enough, (I'm deaf). After this cutscene, Azura disappeared and hey presto! A floating ring was left behind as a token of her appreciation, and... (drum-roll) it was rotating!!
So I went to TESCS and tried to look for the script that made the ring rotate, to no avail. I would greatly appreciate any help on making anything I'd like rotate slowly.
P.S Oh, and another thing. You know what I said about the ray of light hitting the blade? Is there anyway of doing that as well?

Here is the script from the Ring of Azura.
  • Begin ringAzuraScript

;makes ring spin around like a cheesy B movie until you click on it

    short doOnce

    if ( doOnce == 1 )
    return
    endif

    if ( CellChanged == 1 )
    Disable
    endif

    if ( OnActivate == 0 )
    Rotate Z 30
    return
    endif

    Cast "hand of azura" Player
    Set doOnce to 1
    Activate

    End
To make it yours, you would just remove the CellChanged bit, and remove the "Cast "hand of azura" Player" bit, and attach to your weapon.

Thanks very much for that, I'll start applying the modified script to the 'weapon' as soon as I can.
Is there no hope for the 'ray of light' idea? I'm sure I've seen it somewhere before in the game, but I just can't remember where! Perhaps in Tribunal, or Bloodmoon? The graphics there seem to be more... refined.

Not sure about Tribunal or Bloodmoon, but I'm pretty sure there's no 'beam of light' in Morrowind.

Closest you could get is just by putting a light source with a small radius where the weapon is. That would make the weapon appear to be in a beam of light - kinda.

Yeah, just use an ambient light effect on it, thats about the best you're gonna be able to do. They're the big lightbulbs in case you didnt already know.

Maybe with those rocks that made sounds. They had a purple beam of light if I remember correctly.

If you're talking about the Earth Stone quest in the Bloodmoon storyline, where you had to hit three rocks/spires to imitate the pattern of sounds made by the identical three above, then no. It was not a purple beam of light, more like a very visible farting jet pointing upwards. I'm am now laughing my ass off (no pun intended), because I can see an image of a sword being constantly farted on by an unseen entity! Thanks though, I've been experimenting last night and I've found a few light effects that come pretty close to what I'm looking for, although I'll still have to be careful when piling them up on top of each other cos I'd like to make it a seamless ray of light. Anyway, I managed to get the sword rotating beautifully, except for a snag that when I playtest, and I try to pick up the sword, it stays there... but no worries, after looking at the original script, I saw where I'd went wrong and soon fixed it!
Now, I'm just concentrating on building the rest of my tomb worthy of housing the 'Blade of the Sun'.
It makes me wonder, after staring at the sword rotating beautifully for about 10 minutes, just why didn't Bethesda put in more grand effects for legendary artifacts, like the Cuirass of the Saviour's Hide, or Scourge, or Elidon's Ward, or even the Twin Blades of the Gods (Hopesfire, and Trueflame). To tell the truth, when you'd been looking for a certain artifact for a certain amount of time, it would nice to see it up on some pedestal in a ray light, rotating beautifully, rather than just finding it in some bloody cupboard, like the Cuirass of the Saviour's Hide, or in a stupid chest, like Scourge, or like hiding the bastard Elidon's Ward in a place where nobody but the Creator can find it!! Jeez!

I was just wondering if it's possible to apply two scripts at once to the same object, and two enchantments as well? I'm asking this because I've applied the ringAzuraScript to my weapon, but I would also like to apply the bladeScript from the Nerevar_blade_fire found in Tribunal for a cooler effect.

To do that, just take the bits you want from the Trueflame script, and stick 'em in the appropriate place in your new script (if you have just used the Azura's Ring script, then copy all of that into a new script, rename it, save it and then stick the Trueflame bits in an appropriate place)

For two enchantments, its the same: create a new enchantment, and add the effects of the two you wish to merge to it.

Of course, caution must be taken that you don't screw anything up, so make sure you understand the scripts in question before just slapping them down anywhere.

Thanks, but I can't even begin to know what bits to take out of the bladeScript, and it's quite long! However, I did try my hand at it by applying the bladeScript on it's own to the Umbra Sword artfile, and then playtested it. You can guess what happened next...
However, you know what? I think that the rotating blade will be a cool enough effect and I suppose I won't be able to add flaming bits to any weapon I like when I get promoted sometime later on, that will probably be left to the weapon designers. I'm not going to bother you guys about that anymore since I need to get a move on with my proper tomb showcase. Shame, really.
Anyway, I've come across a bit of a snag in my esp. file because I've been trying to create a pit in one of the hallways in my tomb, but when I put in something like in_vs_pitbottom_blah_blah and check that the edges match up all round, it leaves a gap, between the floors that could probably be easily seen by someone falling in it. Does this have anything to do with the objects like in_v_pitmiddle_01
cos they seem to be for the walls of the pit?

Break! Get yourself a coffee or something, cos I ain't gonna show you animal lovers no more pictures for a while!

And as for the two enchantments bit, it's difficult because I'd like to put a few effects that are constant effects, and a few that 'cast when strikes', but the editor doesn't seem to be able to do that; whenever I put constant effect, it does that for all the effects that I've listed, and not for the particular one that i wanted! Argh! I can really appreciate the learning curve you guys were on when you first started this mission...

You can't merge enchantments like that, unfortunately. :(

And yeah, don't worry about all the cool shininess that you want to put in this thing. Remember, this is just a "test", not something for the mod itself. Though if it's particularly good, who knows. Maybe it'll get used.

EDIT: And as for getting the pit working properly, you'll have to wait for a proper Interiorer to get the answers there. I'm just a humble Quester.

There are quite a bit of those pit pieces. The one you are seeking almost has to exist. If you don't find it, however, I always use the velothi foundation from TR_data to cover up holes. I believe it is TR_furn_v_foundation or something.

Gridsnap is on right?

And I have to second Crustacean. Your showcase doesnt need to be flashy and shiny. Something of nice quality, nice layout, nice arangment of static. I think the word I'm looking for is profesional. Make it look profesional.

Hmm, yeah you guys are right, especially about the shiny, flashy bits... which is why I gave up on that fire blade thing... I'm working to make it as spontaneous and original as possible, not too much there, or too litlle here, something like that.
Thanks for the pit-ideas though, I guess I'll have to take a look at some of the tombs with pits in the game, so I can really establish how it's done. Right, back to work!
