Outdated Dres Models

Post by Vrenir »

The old Dres set seen in many of the Map 6 screenshots has been outdated at least twice now, with current debates ongoing as to how the Dres will end up being portayed.

Since this set was built though, and since it is no longer being used for the Dres or for anything else as far as I have heard, would it be possible to release the models and textures publicly as a modders' resource? That way, the effort to build it wouldn't go completely to waste, and the larger community could have a new set to play with since new architecture models aren't all that common.

If you're not interested, that's fine of course. The set is TR property after all. I was just looking through the screenshots again and thinking what it might be used for someday; I'm sure that there are other people who might enjoy it as well.

One of the main reasons that the Dres set isn't being used is that the models have a lot of holes in them. Though I can't speak for the project, I don't see any problem with releasing them, but some modeller would then have to spend a long time making the models fit for release.

If any of the modellers still have the old ones around somewhere. I'm sure somebody still has them though.

The old set had too many problems to be used, and were way too much trouble to fix than was worth it; that was one of the two reasons we scrapped it. Did you have a modeler in mind who is interested in fixing them?

I might be interested, assuming I'd get to use the buildings in the Silgrad Tower mod if I wanted to. I couldn't commit until I would have investigated them in 3D Studio Max, but from what I've seen in the screenshots (link) the design really appeals to me. It looks beautiful and interesting while still feeling "Morrowind-y", so, kudos to the creator. Holes and such wouldn't hinder me much, since I'd most likely recreate them based on the original design. I'd use one hipoly set in ST's Oblivion mod and then export a separate lowpoly (I presume?) set in Morrowind format and give you guys to do with what you like. I've got plenty of skill but my imagination is often meagre, so I think I'm at my best when I'm upgrading an existing design (which is something I've also amassed quite a bit of experience in). If anyone's interested, please email the Morrowind nifs to razorwing@silgrad.com.

Yes, the old models are very nice and have a good dark-elf-style design. I would like to have them too. I have made a few scetches of those models and of those, that could be created in that style.

Those models look almost dunmer spaceships. Dunmer scientology. :D
I still think that old mournhold and velothi are the best choices.

Half of the houses live in giant bugs or giant mushrooms. So outlandish is not necessarily unwarranted. However, I do really like the ideas people have come with for creative uses of the Velothi sets. Perhaps a few unique type buildings would be nice to have if anyone has conceptual ideas of what they would look like. While I know we don't necessarily have too much texturing graphics talent here at TR to focus on Morrowind what with trying to crank out the Hammerfell tilesets, if its something that both TR and ST want, it would seem a good idea to try to get some sort of a joint Dres model thing going. From the sounds of it, if we could get some of our awesome concept artists here to sketch up a couple ideas, some ST people might be able to create the models for them. Just an idea.

Razorwing, I just gotta ask, where would Silgrad need Dres models? I thought Silgrad is in Redoran land ?(

Nevertheless TR as an entity no longer carries the models or has them uploaded anywhere. As the creator of the tileset is no longer active in the modding community and has opted to remain out of the reach of the public internet community, everyone should and must consider it a lost resource, and should no longer count on its existence anywhere that is accessible.

Concerning the interest of other people working from our concepts; thanks for the idea, but OoT, or our internal and public data files, are closed, ie final. No more resources, such as architecture sets, are allowed. This is because of the state the maps are in and the gauging of how worth it creating a new tileset would be when compared with it's projected usage. That's also only possible considering there's someone willing to not only design the set, but also model, test, bugfix, tweak, and then implement (possible the hardest job of all) the new models, all on a very unique schedule.

Thank you all for your continued interest, but the Dres architecture is dead.
