smallporgies showcase
Hi! I've been hanging around the forums for a while and thought I'd finally introduce myself. I would be interested in composing for TR (I use Sibelius with GPO), but also some exterior and maybe interior work too. I have some experience in composing and modding, though not alot but I hope to use TR as an opportunity to improve, as well as contribute .
I don't know when I'll get around to uploading anything to showcase for a while... I'm pretty busy at the moment, but don't worry I'm not normally busy so I will be able to contribute quite a bit usually. Lookin' foward to map 2 btw!

Sibelius doesn't come with an export to .mp3 feature?

First of all - thank you Haplo, Secondly, I am on the verge of recommending you and finally, advice (this advise is centered if that piece was an explore track, please tell me what it is):
The beggining is really good, you have the right idea of Hammerfell, but then the style gets more grand. I tend also to have the problem sometimes of my pieces getting to granduer at points. An easy way to solve this is to put down the volume throught the middle. At about :16 the increase is acceptable, but I would recommend getting there gradually and take more time to get there, since all before is very nice. I like the bit at about :25 but IMO its too different to the intro, but still suits hammerfell around the imperal border. At :48 it gets too grand and too loud. Again, at about 1:13 it get too grand and loud; the brass there don't help. You could try to get the mood as in the begging there with soft brass (thats possible-I know since I am a brass player ). At the end its quite nice again- the drop in volume from the grand to the little drum bit is too big. Otherwise, it ends nicely - I would just try to get rid of some of the granduer bits reoccuring near the end.
Overall- keep the volume steady throught the piece, and don't get too many moods-I really like the introduction, you could try keeping it like that troughout
Good luck smallporgies! You can indeed compose music, and well at that. You just have to get used to the atmosphere we are looking for--I can't wait to recommend you

thanks very much, Jedak. I agree with you on the issue of over-grandeur, I have a tendancy to get carried away! I'll rework the piece a bit and might try writing something else soon as well.
Edit: What did you think of the piano? There isn't any I know of in the original Oblivion (or Morrowind) soundtrack but I thought it went well in the beginning with the gong and ending with the woodwind, even though its not in a significant role. I confess I am a fanatical pianist and freely admit that the most heavy drinkers are both pianists and brass instrumentalists

Great, I can't wait
As for the piano, I can understand why you used it, and you may use it - just depends on how you use it For the higher register I would more likely use a harp, but If I was trying to get some really low notes without the very reedy sound of a contrabasoon I would use a piano.
I am acctually a trumpet player, and I sometimes get carried away too
I'm still too young too drink legally, so I ain't a real brass player

Hello Small Porgies and welcome to the project. First of all, there actually is a piano on the OB soundtrack in "atmosphere_06". However, when I first heard that I was a bit surprised and dissapointed to hear a piano as I don't think a piano fits Tamriel very well. Mostly because it is such a modern instrument compared to the rest of the orchestral arsenal. But, as mr Soule has set the example, you are of course allowed to use the piano, but don't overdo it. IMO you piece relies a bit too heavily on the piano from 0:24-0:45. Maybe you can come up with some other instrumentation there. And as Jedak already suggested, lots of it could be substituted by a harp, at least the arpeggios.
About the grandiosity, Oblivion explore music isn't nearly as grand as MW explore music. Soule has pretty much dumped the idea of grand melodical themes. In some tracks he does a build-up that predicts a grand theme, but just before he arrives there he backs up again. I think that is actually a quite good idea. It sort of gives the player a feeling that something is about to happen and keeps the player in a state of tension.

PS. If Macar doesn't show up in this thread in the next few days, you may always PM him. Composer showcases doesn't show up very frequently and he might not have visited the showcase forum in a while.
PPS. Brass players and pianists are indeed the most heavy drinkers among instrumentalists, but none of them can compete with composers.

aaand here I am!1 Sorry, as mentioned we dont get a lot of music showcases- so I forget to check them at all.
Yet another Sibelius user I didnt realize it because I'm not used to the sounds of GPO yet. Anyway- I like the peice. I think volume is the main isue with the build section. Otherwise I think it could still remain in the background.
Anyway- I'd like to invite you aboard. As soon as you are promoted I'd like you to have a look at the GM music thread in the sound and music forum. And PM me before you write anything.
