Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School

Post by Jedak »

Today I went to an audition for an arts specialist school in Melboure (VCASS) for my music. It went really well -- the theory/musicianship test two weeks ago I found easy. Its a really good school and I hope I get in :)

I'll tell you guys what the results are when they come in :)

break a leg... or whatever you say to a composer/theorist. break a baton? a pencil? Tear up some manuscript paper?

Lol, here we have special schools for musicians. You join one at the age of six, and besides typical lessons you learn how to play and sing etc... It's very tiring though, children attempting this kind of school almost don't have any free time... I even had a girlfriend from such a school :P A also have a friend that tries to be really good at playing French Horn. Musicians are very specific people...

Good luck Jedak :)

Its my own instrument, so I wouldn't want to break it. I got my trumpet only a week after my first lesson - my parents could see I would give it up; I'm serious- I have a silver coated intermediate trumpet (not a begginer-and this was advanced intermediate, meaning it could be used as a professional trumpet). And I still play it :]

Also they make you sing a lot - I'm not sure I can break my voice :)

If I get in, I will be able to conduct my own works! They told me that because of the high level I am at composing and conducting for my age (well, maybe not conducting because I started a few months ago but I am conducting my school band ;) ).

Oh trust me, you can. Take one vocal health class and you'll know that sudden death can come at any time to your voice especialy if you abuse it. Pretty scary to people who are looking to thier voice as their sole means of livelyhood.

:o

I didn't know that!

I'll break a vocal chord, then ;)

The results should come in in about two weeks or so.

EDIT:  I got my trumpet 2 months after my first lesson, not one week. I was only 8, anyway :)

I forgot to tell you guys, I guess it hasn't really sunken in...

*drumroll*

I'M IN!!!!!

I got the result two weeks ago and I totally forgot that I posted it here :P

Since I got the results so early after the audition (yes, thats fast -- I know because most get their results about now) it means that I did really good and they really wan't me in.

:D

My favorite sentance in the confirmation form:
You should be aware that gaining entry to the school is equivalent of winning a major scholarship which covers your music tutition fees, provided by the Victorian State Government.

It sounds like a great place! Congrats again!

Hey, well done man.
Hope it all goes well.

I play in a MYM group at the VCA on Saturdays :].

Personally, I find that VCASS lacks in creativity and innovation when it comes to music.

The head of strings thinks that the correct method of playing music is not playing for weeks, and then him molding your playing to his satisfaction.

Pathetic, in my view, but I play celtic music so no wonder.

Congratulations again for getting in, you must be pretty damn good at what you do.
Ignore the extra d, please.

Hey thanks! :D

I've got a friend who goes there (he's a year older) and he also plays trumpet, so I know I'm going to the right place.
(btw I am a higher AMEB grade then him hehe...)
