Editing from the top, will post if I can find a thread too-

just getting my feet wet again now that I have found a new home and gotten on SSDI- still have to move so it'll be patchy for a bit but here, have some ruins, heh.
Sorry it's rougher than usual.

full size here- I can remove the haze if you want, too.
7-sided stuff. Whee!

Well, I figured I'd submit some concept for desert plants. I grew up in the desert, and in nature documentaries people will tell you that the desert is "rich" with life. Well, it does have a good number of living things, this is true, but most of them aren't things you want to come across.
Anyway, water is a problem in the desert, and plants adapt to gather and store as much of it as they can, however they can.
Here's my first little sketchie. The fillia(er?) in the flowery bits filters moisture from the air.

What do you think?
I'll post more within this post. I think this plant should have a nice thick root for storing water- the leaves with the big thorns are there to discourage digging for it.[/img]

Thats no 'sketchie' that is beautiful, glad that you showed us a bit of your work. I am very impressed, can I ask what you work with? What software/hardware etc? And also, is that small version, or did you create it that small? Whatever size, it is definately a fantastic piece of eye candy!

Awwh, thank you!
Yeah, I made it that small- 400 by 400 pixels, 300ppi.
I just drew it directly in Photoshop with a Wacom tablet and stylus.
As for hardware, I have an athlon 1800 CPU (1.4 gig) and like 728 or whatever megs of ram
GeForce FX 5700
really it's pretty out of date.
And thank you for the compliments!

Thanks, I am looking for them second hand, but i just forked out on Photoshop..... well I say forked out... I paid about £10 (approx $16) for CS2, but I didn't expect to get it so cheap. Ask for it for my birthday.

This succulent sucks.
More specifically, it sucks the juice out of small animals that are lured by the smell of water that it's central leaves put off- both a means of storage, and a lure. The "roots" grab the prey, wrap around it (sort of like a snake) and then extend smaller roots into the animal itself, sucking out all of it's liquids.

Eewww I see what the plant is doing to that rat. Very nice. Would it be possible to see some of your future concepts from multiple angles? Just a rough Front and Side to go along with the drawing would be great. Makes the object much easier to model.

Oh I made it all yesterday. Went out and did swimming too, played some world of warcraft, had dinner and stuff.
(edit)
Okay, no double-posting, right?
So here's today's succulent:

Errr, the sketch thing really sucks.
Trying to figuyre out wa way to make it make sense. I'm finding a top view a bit challenging- I could try for a view from another side if there isn't enough information from the original sketch.
But basically this is a real life succulent, nto sure what the name of it is though.
There are 4 rows of leaves going up the stem, but the leaves do not line up. Rather, one row is a little higher on the stalk than the one to it's left, and the row next to it is a little higher still, and the last is a little higher than that, and then the pattern begins again, if that makes sense. Many plants have this sor tof "spiral" pattern of leaves.
The leaves are also thich, as with most succulents.
I hope these are useful- I'm having a lot of fun making them, anyway!

Your plants look quite realistic, especially the first and last, and the colouring really seems to fit the plants. I could imagine the Windkiss's root being used in cooking, etc... Are you any good at animals? Creatures with this skill and functionality would be a treat to see.

I am extremely jealous, that stuff is great. I really need to learn how to take bits of pictures (like the sand) and use them in pictures. And I lie the grass too, and I can see what that is. You're work is teaching me alot.
And I didn't realise we had another female member in our midst. Guys, lets make sure we're courteous.

Awwh, thank you all, I'm honoured and flattered by your words!
The sand was made by chosing two similar colours, one lighter nd one darker (for the shadows) and then an application of a monochromatic guassian add noise filter. On the last one I also burned the sand a bit at a veyr low percentage. Then I used dodge and burn with a very large brush (again, low percentage) to give the light source effect.
The grass is easy- just take two similar colours (one lighter, one darker, again, more dramatic differences for more dramatic grass) and use the grassblade-shaped paintbrush.
I have been thinking about making some creatures- it's sort of intimidating for me, but I'll probably give it a shot in the next few days, once I've planted my herb garden out back and installed some new cat-6 under the house so we can move the server.
Also, I think I'll wander aorund the neighbourhood and take some photos of succulents (top and two sides, prolly) for easy texturing. Would that be helpful?

You ask, you recieve:
Okay, so I had my camera set to a higher rez than I'd intended, and was only abl3e to take 21 pictures, but hopefully these will be helpful. let me know if you want more, or different ones, or more sides or what have you. I would have gotten tops and sides for all of them,b ut my memory card was full :/
PS the zip file wouldn't upload to this site, so it's here:

(succulents.zip let me know if it works!)

The Tauhee
I needed a little break from plants, so I made a creature!
Yay ungulates!
This is a Tauhee. He lives in HIGH desert, in the mountains. It can easily snow in high desert mountains- perhaps the ones near Skyrim?
He has shaggy fur to keep him warm, and some stripes to uh, blend in with the tall, tough coarse grasses that grow up there. Or maybe because I like Okapis. The world may never know!

That's really great, wish I could utilitise photoshop like that, how long did it take you, maybe I just don't tke enough time on things. Is it based on a real creature?
EDIT: I tested it out, did you smudge the hair in the leg, and out of the bottom of the neck, then go over it, with a plain paintbrush, in the colour the hair was? I will give it a try, but really I need to get a wacom tablet

Well, first I made a light line sketch (brush size 1) and then filled it in with a base colour (the red.)Then I used a base colour to fill in each of the other colours (brown and cream)using my rough linework as something of a guide and a 3 brush for hte furry edges. Used same brush to paint in shades, then some burn tool. After that, I went to town with the smudge tool, genereally from 67% to 86% or so. Added more highlights and shadows, more painted hairs, more smudging. smudged some of the original black linework, locked transparency on it and painted some of the lines more subtle colours.
Er, don't know if that helps?
Yes, Wacom tablet.

Forgot I even had this thread.
Oh hey so updates:
1. Do you still want a fuzzy centipede? Sounds like fun to draw! My life went straight to hell not long after I last posted on this thread.
2. I posted this elsewhere, but I have yet to figure out which posts are "active," so here it is:
Semsemia, modeled after an old Egyptian harp type thing, but I modified the "neck" a bit.

http://www.niceboots.org/~evergrey/Tamriel/semsemiainprog.jpg
The only ones you can find on the 'net are cheapo mostly for decoration thingers. I guess it's either rare to find for real, or a mostly lost art. :/
But hey, I showed this design to an amazing medieval style harpmaker over in Scotland- perhaps he'll be inspired and make it! If he does, I hope he sends me one.

If I am correct, it should be about two feet high. It looks very nice, but I wonder if there's anything that could be done to make it a little more distinctly hammerfellian, since now it's a beatiful instrument that would be at home anywhere.

I would love to see ruin concepts
PoHa: how can we best this trio of trouble? who will save us from this menace of sub-par models? what will we do?
PoHa: I know! we'll shoot an Aro at them
Aro: you have only one Aro missile!
PoHa: yes, but its heat seeking and quite possibly indestructible
