[FCG] Dunedweller weapons & clutter

Post by Gez »

Yes, dunedweller weapons! They're crude, made of bones and stones, and leather and scavenged materials. They're often decorated with little gris-gris, knotted strings or feathers from some desert bird. They're made by dirt-poor Bedouin-like tribes of Redguard living in the great Alik'r and the barren Dak'fron deserts.

We've already got a few concepts from Lutemoth, and a finished model of a dagger. Let's see this turned into a full set. We need two or three more blades, a few short axes, some maces, maybe a small hammer. We also need a bow, arrows, and why not a shaman staff?

Lutemoth's concept weapons:

Finished dagger:

Update: We're starting to have all the weapons we need, so the Dunedweller FCG is being generalized to clutter too. :)

Lutemoth's dunedweller concepts:

There should be enough art to make all the models we'll need in the Dunedweller items category. Tents (ints and exts), clothing, armor, and camel saddles are still needed; but that can wait, so for now this thread will not be considered priority anymore and is therefore unstickied. :) Though feel free to add more if so you want, of course.

Ooh, very nice. May I inquire as to what program you model with?

The dagger? I think it was Morden who made it, with 3DSMax. (I personally use Blender 'cuz it's free, but I'm a complete noob at modeling so you won't see my stuff anywhere. I'm only skilled enough to modify meshes made by others.)

Morden uses blender too :) And hey, a shaman staff would be awesome.

Sweet. This is a great topic. The knife was actually modeled and textured by the mysterious Eyeball88 who lurks, but rarely posts. Although we co-operate on a lot of meshes, this one was all him. He models in 3dsMax.

I model in SoftImage|XSI, Blender, and Zbrush. So far i've modeled a short sword, two-handed sword, and a mace, but those are meant to be an old Yoku set. I look forward to seeing what you guys come up with for these nomads. I may have to submit a few concepts myself

Here are some inspiring dunedweller concepts from Lutemoth's thread:

Here's an idea I had of an ax:

NOW IN COLOR!

I get some more up later.

Cool. Looks more like a machete than an axe, I'd say. :)

This would fit very well with the dagger.

Here's what I've come up with so far. Thought I'd throw a few recognizable bones in with a few not so.

LTS, they are brilliant. love the bow, and the thigh bone hammer. the only one i dont really like is the "axe?" just to the right of the bow. but im sure all of these modeled would look just friggen briliant.

I wasn't sure what to label it either lol. That one could use some refining. Its too much of a hybrid weapon.

Those are impressive illustrations. Great ideas for primitive weapons. Could you please upload them at a higher resolution for future modeling and texturing purposes?

Great, thumbs up & superb.
And I do like the second one from the left, the "axe?". Nifty idea to make the blade heavier with stones.
The only thing that bugs me a little bit is that when you look a these weapons primitive is a word that comes to me. Dunedwellers is not a primitive people, just practical. But it only bugs me a little bit.

They're great! I like the bow and arrows the most. :) The axe-thing is great, too; just the kind of things I had in mind.

Everyone can contribute.
Elfane wrote:Dunedwellers is not a primitive people, just practical. But it only bugs me a little bit.
No, but they have limited means. They don't have the resources in their desert for smithing, so they get their metal items by trade rather than doing them themselves. It's easy to seem primitive when you don't have worked metal.

As for myself, I don't think these weapons look more primitive than the dagger. Maybe the bones could be carved and sculpted a bit more to look more worked, but as you said yourself, they're practical. To make a blunt weapon, you don't need to carve out a blade. So I think it's fine.

Be sure to start a showcase after you do some modelling with TR concepts. I'm always looking for new modellers :)

LTS, you are great. That's exactly the type of concepts we need. Detailed, precise, clear, interesting. I like the idea of the skulls mace. My suggestion is to make the handle a bit more longer, because the way it is now, this weapon would be very heavy while having still a very short range. How about a staff? :)

Colaboration with posts :D

I had to give it a go also...

From the left...
2-handsword/cleaver

shield light version, a frame is made from strong bones. In the center a wicker construction that is hardend with a mix of some plant resin and saliva from a wierd desert creature. Then add som stylish and protective skins from your resent hunt and you have yourself a dunedweller shield

to the right, I know there is a name for that kind of weapon but I dont remeber it.

Nice to see an inflation in the CA section, without loosing any quality :D

<Lady_N> i had an orgasm in school today when i saw Lighter's weapons
cause they are that awesome. i think between you (lighter) and elfane, we have all the dunedweller stuff we need. a staff would still be nice though :)

gez, will you be putting up claims? or does that fall to aro?

Well, I wasn't going to put up claims since I assumed it fell within the jurisdiction of the God of Turn Pictures Into Models. I'm just the God of Make People Post Pictures. (And I love Redguard God names.)

And I do want to see a good shaman staff.

Human skulls is more what'd I expect of goblins or grummites. Not of dunedwellers. They aren't Tusken raiders or such, they're perfectly normal human beings who just happen to live in an inhospitable place.

Bbbut in Oot there is a mace called ''coral mace'' and I think that it is for Dunedwellers, and howewer there were bones and skulls on concepts of dunedweller weapons.

The coral mace is for stirk.
And the bones & skulls etc is'nt from humans, it's from animals.
One staff (without human skulls) is on it's way + some clutter & various dunedweller stuff.

Coral Mace for Dunedwellers? Where would they find coral in the desert sand? If it were for the Dunedwellers, it would be called Dunedweller Mace, wouldn't it? The Coral Mace is actually tied to a Stirk quest, and is completely unrelated with our Bedouin-like Redguards.

Edit: Ninja'ed by Elfane, so I confirm what he says.

Totally Agreed.

And the Dundwellers would ideally like to embellish things a bit more I imagine, in terms of the bone. They are partial to a carving or two.

But I certainly think these are a few BEAUTIES of sketches.

A small dunedweller collection and a very little bit of lore.
Dunedwellers is a nomadic people that travels the desert and are among the few that can live in the deepest of the desert and survive. They can find everything they need in this arid terrain. But sometimes they travel into the cities to trade some of their crafts, especially pottery and skinworks.
Thats the reason that you can find the duneclay all over HF.

The dunedweller also like hot and exotic spices. The buy/trade/steal/take any spice they can get their hands on. Since the food in the desert is'nt that variating the need for different tastes is huge. Hence the spice collecting.

edit - I dont like the staff that much, so perhaps I will make a new design for it

I like the chili string. Could be a "fake flora" like the garlic cluster of vanilla Oblivion.

If the horns of the jug were pointing downward, they could serve as a handle.

Nice touch with the symbols.

Yes, Gez the jug should have its horns pointing downwards. I realised this also when I scanned the thing but I was to lazy to change it. Everything take alot more time when working without a tablet.

And making the chili string a "fake flora" would be neat.

Thanks for the symbol cred, it's the one thing on that page I am the most proud over ;D
