Claiming, because I almost finished this while practising with speedtree. The texture is mine too. Have a look:

BTW, do you think it should form into groups always or only in some places?

I'd say it should always be in clusters. The only point of not putting them as clusters would be to help modders get more freedom in how to place them. These plants really don't look like the solitary kind.

Also, of course, it needs to curve more, to have a little branch, shorter thorns with a more pronounced angle, etc. but you know that.

One thing with trees in the CS is that you can't rotate them! It sucks, since there's always some stupid static interfering with a tree in a tight spot. Having them clustered would probably have the branches pointing in various directions...

K, I'm gonna make two versions. Clustered and a single one.

Isn't doable. Speedtree limitations. And I want to have this made with speedtree. It gives us many other advantages that are worth of it(poly use for example, billboards).

In the IRC channel I told you that it should be more of a bush than a single plant. So clusters yes.

Would it be possible to import the speedtree into Max and refine it there? Just adding a few verts to get the proper bend and curve of it???

Amen to than Gez.

Otherwise its looking good. Though I would like it to only have thorns on its "backside" like on the CA. Or at least not 4 thorns grouping together like that on one edge. A bit more randomness.

I'm using speedtree 4.0, Flesh :)

Update. Files are aviable to download now, do not send it to review yet.
Would it be possible to import the speedtree into Max and refine it there? Just adding a few verts to get the proper bend and curve of it???
I don't know if that is even possible, but it would kill all the speedtree advantages anyway. This has to stay in the .spt format if you do not want to get a effect simillar to the one you get on some plantations in Morrowind Map1(IIRC).

Here's how it looks now:

I doubt it can get any closer to the concept without raising the polycount. What you think?

Looking alot better, to bad that you can't edit .spt in Max, but oh well. I am satisfied with the result. But the cluster/clusters should perhaps be closer together. As if the plants are growing from one root system. But with some grass around it it will look very neat as it is. Great work, and fast.

w00t for v4, but if you notice in the files it is mainly a max plug-in with CAD just thrown in there. It is very possible I'm just not exactly sure how :O And it looks quite nice, the cluster is my favourite :)

EDIT: You see what you did there with clusters? There is a specific tool in MAX for SpeedTree called ST Forrest, it's about making those clusters and such I think, maybe worth checking out?

EDIT2: I know a way to get it closer to the concept. Do you see how there are branches on the main trunk (in the concept)? And then thorns, well why not make the 2nd layer (which you have as thorns right now I presume) those branches, then add a 3rd layer of branches, to be as thorns. As far as I know you can add a couple of layers for your needs.

Attack of the clones:

These all are the same varation(I was only testing). It turned out that speedtree clusters don't work with oblivion. It will be up to the modder and/or region generation to put some into clusters.

Flesh, for trees I'm working only with CAD. The max plugin do not work for me. I tried a lot to make them work, but they refuse :( Thanks for the layers suggestion :) After some basic attempts, it looks like a powerful tool :) I'll try to make a use of it.

So, what ya think about the current progress? Adanorcil suggested that I should make this with typical modelling software. But since I just don't feel like doing it with typical modelling software (cause I do that all the time anyway), I would just drop the claim if the quality isn't satisfying. What you say?

P.S. Lady N, there is a polycount note on one of the previous screens.

Not bad. Since we can't rotate you'll need to make rotated variations (seeds).

Ten models (there are nine more from the cluster that needs to be usable in game) times eight rotations (seems a reasonable minimum, every 45° angle) equals 80 speed trees, though.

Meh. I leave the final word to Lady Nerevar then. There are two posibilites. I can scrap this claim or finish it up in a speedtree version. BTW, PoHa gave me some ideas and it actually might be possible to make make a cluster with speedtree.

wait, is speedTree needed, or do i just model clusters of them, and make variations?

SpeedTree isn't required, it's just preferred. If you can make a good enough model with a decent budget of polies, then it should be fine.

It looks nice :P, but the shape should be way more "swirly" and round looking at the concept. The tips of the plants are also a tad close to the ground, in the concept you can clearly see that they are pointed towards the sky.

yea, the tips should be a tad higher. placing something close to the ground like that causes a bit of a problem for exterior modders. since ground is hardly ever that flat the tips will almost always bleed. anyhow, looking good :)

OK, here is the model I will tweak to make all of the clusters and stuff. the thorns will be alpha mapped on those planes on the back of the plant, its 403 faces.
I'll update with a cluster later.

Geez, I have been mega-busy lately, so sorry about the no updates thing. School started up again, I got a girlfriend, and I have been working a bit on my 3D portfolio.
As soon as I can though, I will update this a little bit.
