I'm having (Un)Installation Problems!

Post by 0v3rkill »

All right. My brother lost his oblivion disc after he un-installed it from my computer. So, I go buy another one from best buy not even 15 minutes ago. I pop the disc in and it says...

So I click play. BAM! This pops up.

So out of curiosity, I click Data Files...

"Damaged!?! I'll uninstall it!?"

At this point, I yell "FUCK!" So all I can do is click okay, and then this shows up.

I've done what it says 4 times already. I've scoured my C:Drive, and still nothing. The Bethesda site is telling me to run setup.exe and try to uninstall.
To correct this, you will need to reinstall Oblivion. However, if you repeatedly uninstall and re-install Oblivion, certain systems will display an error message if you try to uninstall Oblivion again. To fix this, put your Oblivion disk in and run setup.exe. This will clear up the error and you can uninstall and reinstall the game
There is no setup.exe! I don't see it! Do I need the original disc my brother bought? Am I going to have to Wipe my hard drive... again?(Computer Virus)

Your registry is corrupt. It's a fixable issue. You will need to delete a few things in your registry though. Go to Start>Run

Run regedit.exe.

Be very careful! Messing with the system registry is very dangerous.

There are a bunch of folders on the left of the window.

1. Click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
2. Click SOFTWARE
3. Click Bethesda Softworks.
4. Find the Oblivion folder, right-click and delete it.
5. If you have the Oblivion CS, uninstall that first, and then delete the folder Oblivion - Construction set.

That should do it. Remember, be very careful. If I screw your PC up, sorry. :(

But I think that should work and clear things up. I had this issue before myself.

Moving this to Off-Topic. Old location is for TR product help only.

First, I would suggest deleting your Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion folder(the whole thing), saving any mods or custom data you want to keep in an extra folder on your desktop during this process.

After that, go to Add/Remove Programs, and try to remove it. It might give you a message saying files could not be found, but will offer you the choice of removing it from the list. I don't think this step is completely necessary, but it makes me feel more secure in my OCD.

Next, go to C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\My Games and delete the Oblivion folder. (Save your Oblivion.ini if you have edited it and want to keep your settings)

Finally, go to Start > Run > type in regedit and hit okay. Maximize the window for ease of use if you like. On the left-hand side, navigate to My Computer > HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Bethesda Softworks. Delete the Oblivion folder there.

Those four steps should totally erase your computer's recollection of Oblivion, and should guarantee you a successful fresh install. Just to be sure you can run a search in all drives and all files and folders for 'oblivion' and delete anything you might have missed that has still persisted.

Good luck!

Note - While in regedit, you may become easily distracted by some other interesting thing. I must warn you: I doubt "undo" works in regedit, so be extra careful of what you touch.

If you don't mess with your computer's registry then you haven't tried everything. It's very very straightforward, simple, and safe if you do only what the instructions provide. If you wipe your computer you lose all your data, and have to back up anything you want to save. Your computer is fine; you just have a corrupted registry entry for one game. Deleting the registry is a lot more sensible than deleting the hard drive.
