Question about the music made for Map 1

First I have to say to the creators of the music made by the TR team for Map 1 that the music is absolutely astounding. I didn't even know that most of the music was from you guys (Dragonfly, Dummyplug, Dave G., Macar and Raincatcher) until I heard a song that I really liked and decided to find it in the music folder-- only to discover that it was Raincatcher's!

My question, though, is this: How did you guys do it? How did you make the music, what software did you use, what are some links for an individual interested in making his own music? I'm afraid that my musical prowess extends only to my voice and to my guitar, and you can't make beautiful soundtrack quality music with only those two things.
