Release of Morrowind splash screens?

Post by Dragon32 »

I wondered if you intend on packaging up the Telvannis and Antediluvian Secrets promotional images, like the one on the TR front page, as correctly sized (1024x1024, 24bit) TGAs and releasing them?

I'm a bit of a sucker for new splash screens and these would be a nice addition to my collection (174 at the moment).

Well, it's something we have thought about before. However, in the end, there were three reasons it hasn't been made:

1. Morrowind's standard splash screens are creatures, not screen shots. We thought about getting some of the TR creatures done in the same style, but none of our artists did it so it was dropped.

2. Splash screens are huge. The pack would weight a ton, and we are rather conservative with our bandwidth since we're graciously hosted and we don't want to abuse this hospitality.

3. It is very easy for anyone to turn screenshots and promotional pictures into splash screens. IrfanView, for example, can batch-process it in a minute: just select all the files, choose extra parameters for conversions: 1024x1024 resizing and TGA format.

Actually, Lute did or was doing it, but then fell off the face of the earth.

Oh well, shame.

Yeah I've done that with some of the screenshots from elsewhere on the TR site. Trouble with them is that the process of 'original pic' > 'JPG version for web' > 'TGA version for splash' loses quite a bit of detail.

Where there're duplicates I've replaced the JPG-based ones I made from the TR site with ones from the download as the ones in the download are better quality.

So, yes I could do it but I'd prefer not to start with a 640x480 compressed JPG.

Thanks for the PSD; still looks like there's some JPEG-style compression artifacts, one can see them on the curved letters. If you have a higher resolution version (as the splashscreens are 1024x1024) I'd be doubly grateful; regardless of format. A version of this is definitely going in my Splash folder. Thanks! :)

Now all I need is the Telvannis one... ;)

nah, thats as big as they get. the compression artifact maybe because of my shoddy layer-using practices or something, sorry.

[edit]
ive uploaded 5 never before seen (i think) wallpaper sized images over to nexus :)

No worries on the logos.

Great news on the others though, off I go!

I actually think that the title "boxes" for each map (modeled after the original Morrowind and expansion packaging) would make a nice splash pack.
