My new concepts will be on hold a bit, the last three paintings for school are taking quite a bit more time than I thought they would, so I need to work on them instead. Wont be to long tho, and I have quite a bit of TES art getting backed up that should be done soon, so there will be plenty of holiday goodies for everyone. :P

If it's an entire building, then it is smaller then a shack, and looks like a squashed kwamma forager.

An exterior doorway.
Also, I don't think it's too "redoranish": http://www.imperial-library.info/rgbooks/page.shtml?14

Those are shacks made out of silt strider shells, though. It's not real architecture. And an architecture meant to look like shells would be too redoranish.

Well, perhaps something that looked more like stock silt strider shells could be used for slave shacks, but those are rather unimportant at the moment. The main architectural style should take precedence.

I have an excellent idea (well, in my opinion anyway), and no way to draw it; I don't have a scanner or a drawing app. Oh well.

I was thinking a half-pyramid type deal, some kind of a cross between an obelisk's oblique slope and an Aztec pyramid's staggered architecture, to allow for lower-, middle-, and upper-class levels. There would be a large, open space at the top to allow sunlight to reach the market place in the hollow middle.

The inside would be hollow, and the living quarters would be between the inner and outer walls (similar to the Velothi waistworks or Ghostgate).

There are two pylons out front, and steps leading to the entrance to the inside, a cross between Egyptian pylons and the lions at the New York Public Library.

The color is a cold, stone gray, with blue tapestries hanging on the outside, like the ones on Velothi cantons.

There could be large balconies at the middle- and -upper class levels.

One thing that I think would be a cool idea was to have semi-circular recessed corners on the outside of the building, painted blue or covered in blue stone or ceramic, with a smooth, ridged pattern-- think a pillbug's shell, but inverted so that it curves inward.

There's no harm in showing what you've done, but keep in mind that we're not going for a design that looks Indorilish, so it'll depends on what those resemblance are exactly...

It does seem rather Redoran-ish, imho.

Something to keep in mind in future posts is image size, especially the width of the image. The rest of this page is being stretched now because of your image _LPS. If you can't or don't want to resize them, you could always just make them a link, but I know also that ImageShack gives you thumbnail code which you should be able to use here.

Sorry for the crappy quality. I saved some of the work as a jpg. I later remembered not to do that.

Also, I don't have a scanner, so forgive the bad Paint job.

I was thinking of a hole up top (sort of like the Pantheon). First level is Market place/lower class living quarters. Second is MC, third is UC. The living quarters for the lower class would be between the inner and outer walls, like this:

Sorry for the double post.

So how does concept art work? Does somebody just take a look and then create models and textures, or is there like a committee that chooses a design?

I envision the Dres as living in two different levels in their cities, with the very poor and storehouses on the bottom, and the richer merchants above. The two levels would be connected by stairways at intervals, and perhaps some of the wealthiest merchants would have thier houses connect vertically to thier servants quarters/ storehouses.

In the center of the city would be the canton where the lord lives along w/ his family and servants. Immmediatly surrounding the canton are the most important buildings: temples, barracks, and the houses of the very wealthy.

Regardless of the final design chosen, I think the Dres should have very dense cities, as they are an agricultural society and have a very long history.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but a canton (at least in the world of TES) is not an estate for one family. It is like those cantons in Vivec, made up of many families and filled with many different businesses. What you're proposing isn't really a canton, but a central fortress/tower structure, like the Telvanni towers that their wizards live in.

Well if we use the real world definition of it a canton is an area that is sectioned of and governed or controlled, so similar to district for cities or counties for states. I see the city description as how it is used in Morrowind and each canton is separately controlled by a House or the Temple. Since Dres is one house, I would say that different cantons might be controlled by separate clans, clan alliances, or other alliances or groupings, such as the Slave Canton, or the Market Canton. IF we go by the the single mention of Dres cantons, it suggests a structure, or at least something that you can be directly "outside" of.

Are we pursuing a city canton or a canton surrounded by other buildings? (By city canton, I mean an entire city inside of a canton). I had the impression a city canton was the more popular idea.

p.s. - /finals woot!

Agreed, having a district made up of Molag Mars would get old, even with cool new cantons like the ones Túrelio has desigened. Besides, it makes sense to have cities built around cantons/ central structures. I envision somethin like this:
Large landowner builds very large building in the center of his families plantation to house his family, servants, slaves, etc. As the population of the plantation grows, additional houses are built around the outside of the now very large main structure (be it canton, large tower, etc). This eventually leads to the formation of cities around the cantons. The cantons, then, are primarily smaller towns, particurally the inverted one, as they offer excellent defense for the population.

@greendogo: regarding cantons, you are correct I was rushed when I typed my earlier post and didn't have time to fully flesh out my idea and proofread. Unfortunatly, I am also pressed for time now, so my idea will have to wait.

A lot of catching up to do with this thread. First of all, I'd like to throw in a reminder that there's no real hurry here. Map 6 is a long way off. I'm sure all aspects of Dres culture will receive their share of attention in due time.

Second of all, I like the canton-within-a-canton idea. The rich literally sit on top of the poor, and the poor are literally hemmed in on all sides. I agree that some form of (solid) bridge would also help the mood, and make travel simpler in the canton. I also like the idea of having three of the cantons surrounded by scattered houses, if only because it makes me think of 1984's three pyramids. :)

Kepp up the good work.

RL has been getting in the way all this year. I've been working on the concepts little by little, and the 4th page has been nearly done since I released the 3rd, but it is going slowly. Events are coming at a crossroads for me however, and either way I will probably have more time on my hands, except one way will really suck, and the other will just be life returns to normal for me.

Like I said, I have various concepts done already. I also have a really good visualization(in my head) of what I believe the interior tileset should look like, which arguably is more important than the exterior. While the exterior will whatever we choose, most likely look close to Velothi, the interior needs a new feel, and needs the most modeling work too. I've been attempting to work on a exterior/interior Showcase so I can do some modding, and I think I have a very good idea of all the different types we need to have a versatile and interesting interior tileset that modders can get creative with. While we can get away with retexturing some Velothi structures, or only have a limited number of them for the exterior, with would be game-stopping to have only half of the interior tileset, because you cannot combine them with an existing one and expect them to match.

I will have concepts of them as well once I get to it. I also don't like to release my concepts just a few at a time, so you will just have to wait for me to do some more before I put them up here. I really don't want to and can't say how long till then.

Sounds exciting Turelio. Can't wait!

So what characteristics have you been thinking about for the interior?

Also, this is to everybody, I was wondering if we are going to be including some form of the "waiting door" mentioned on the imperial library website. Here's a link:
http://www.imperial-library.info/fsg/blackwindarticle1.shtml

Here's the quote:
Revered by Vivec as the representation of the Dunmer before the rule of the Tribunal, it would seem that the Dres still cling to traditions of old. The Dres despite their staunch support of the Temple still embrace the aspects of venerating the spirits of their ancestors, through the family shrine. Upon entering the fold of one house through adoption or through marriage, the member of the house binds themselves through ritual and oath into the clan of which they belong and to their House. Through this sacrament, they would find themselves adhered with communication and benefits of their clan’s ancestors, though his connection is less than their offspring, they still retain access to that of their own ancestors. Though this applies to every House, it would seem that only the Ashlanders and the Dres would take this so far. There are those that say that the Dres still worship the Daedra, and even if they did, they would have revered the Anticipations of the Tribunal rather than the other Daedra specifically the Four Corners of the House of Troubles. It would be rather hard to hide the worship any other Daedra other than the Anticipations.

Within each residence, would be a shrine, though it may be no bigger than a hearth in poorer homes or an alcove with the houses of those that are well off, these shrines are consecrated by the mere presence of displayed venerated family relics. In the interior of the homes of the rich, there is often a room set aside, specifically for the use of the ancestors. This isolated shrine is called the Waiting Door, which represents the door to Oblivion.

It is within this shrine, family members would pay their reverence to their ancestors through sacrifice and prayer, as well as through oaths sworn upon duties. Family members must also pay their respects to their ancestors by giving a thorough report of the affairs of the family. Upon paying their respects to their revered ancestors, they may receive in return knowledge, training, and blessings from their ancestors for their dutiful veneration of their ancestor spirits.

The Temple discourages such practices, as family tombs and the use of private tombs causing these traditions to fall into disfavor; the Dres have shown that they do not obey all commands of the temple, despite their fidelity to the temple by continuing such practices.
The last bit is a counter to any argument about how Temple faithful Dunmer wouldn't worship Daedric Princes (albeit, the Good Daedra). Of course, this is all coming from the Imperial Library, so take it with a grain of salt.

I have something in mind that almost looks like an in between for Redoran and Velothi, but not quite that simple. By Redoran, I don't mean organic, but I can't really clearly explain it here, and besides it's not been explored yet. The Velothi interior tileset is very versatile, but in some ways I believe it is not very appealing. I want the interior tileset to have most of the same types as Velothi, but with a totally different look and textures/color. Hopefully also will several versions just like the other, so a Small, Medium, and Larger, with perhaps more, that can all be fitted together. All the extras like pillars and partitions are very important. I want our modders to be able to build any rooms they want to match the outside or the function/look they need.

I guess the biggest thing I can say right now is that I want them to have color, like a band of red that runs the walls of rooms, maybe with writing or designs on them. We could also do several color types like this, as long as they are close to each other, and some without color, to spice things up.

Personally I like aspects of the "Waiting Room", but I agree it could get dull. If we did this, it would be up to modders to make each family shrine different and interesting. Possibly also instead of such shrines in the homes, they could be in their ancestral tombs, or the Dres Mausoleums, which I have to find the source for again, but I believe are mentioned. TR has already decided differentially on some aspects of the Dres from that article. But with Dres, we have a lot of ways we can create something unique.

I somewhat like the idea, but I do agree that in normal housing, it would be rather impractical. Perhaps it would be possible, however, to do one, or a few big ones in Necrom as a kind Waiting Door-Lounge, in a manner of speaking.
