Oldest game?

Post by jonarus_drakus »

Specificaly:

"What is the oldest computer game you have (as in instaled) and STILL PLAY?"

There are plenty here who still play morrowind, myself included, but is that the best you can do?

My oldest game? TIE FIGHTER (the extended version with the extra tours of duty), from... when was it... '95?
It still occupies a small corner of my hard drive, right next to the mission editor i got for it.

PS: I LOVE the Tie Interceptor, best playable ship in the game if u ask me.

Some weird educational Magic School Bus game.... don't look at me like that! Those games rocked for little kids.

Or some weird dungeon game where somehow spikes erupted from the ground without any warning, and you died. But that wasn't mine.

Your yet to list anything that i havnt played at some point (i happen to have the CIV4 version of colonization now - not as good as the origional if u ask me).

Its just that TIE is the oldest game i actually have installed and still play.

If i was going for the oldest game i'd ever played full stop, then we would be talking late '80s golf games on a monocrome monitor (keep in mind i was only born in '84 - gamer from the age of 3 or 4!).

Commander Keen ftw. It was the breakout game for ID Software, which is obviously doing very well for itself nowadays. It's one of my all-time favorite platformers, and it still holds interest and challenge despite being utterly ancient.

(For the record, five of the six canonical Keen games are available through Steam, but I've been playing them since I was in kindergarten on a 1986 Packard Bell "microcomputer". My dad had to trick it into thinking it was the eighties so it wouldn't crash on Y2K. I love old stuff.)

Yes, why only count pc games? I still play on my old SNES sometimes. That's all pre '95. Oldest game I still play on the pc would be Warcraft 2.

Hm, currently I'm not playing old games. However, I think I still have C&C: RA2 installed on my other PC. That's from... 2000, I think?

Oh! I recently installed Arena via DOSbox, but it played very, very laggy. I only played it for a couple of minutes. I'm not sure what the problem was, though, so that doesn't really count.

Ooh, ooh. I also played the first C&C a couple of years back on a PC that might as well have come from the same year.

RA2 was deffinitely post '01 (it was tiberiaum sun that came out when your thinking X-mas '99 at the exact same time as AoE2 and Homeworld).

Ahhh DOSbox, i know it well, its how i play TIE fighter.

The Origional C&C was late '95 or '96, it was 'compatible' with win95 (as compatable as anything can be with a microsoft product :D ).

The original C&C was '95. I have it. I play it. I love it.

I think that's as far back as I go, PC-wise. I still play Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64, and Mario Kart 64, though. I don't know how old they are.

Hmm, the oldest PC game I still own is Total Annihilation, and it's still brilliant for LAN gaming :D

The oldest game I own on any platform is Sonic 1 on the Sega Megadrive/Genesis. IMO Sonic 2 was a superior game though.

Sonic... those were the days, man. I don't exactly know which is my oldest because I can't remember getting them, but one of my games on my Sega Genesis :)

Installed on my other PC I have Dungeon Keeper (97) C&C (95).

At the moment I'm going back into old PSX games, such as Destruction Derby (95) Rival Schools (98).

Then we can go farther back to the original Sonic games on the Mega Drive/Genesis, along with Streets of Rage, Mortal Kombat, and suchlike.

I recently downloaded the Xargon series for DOSbox. That was from 1993, and I had it back then too. Other than that I still play XCOM (1993) and Planescape: Torment (1999) every so often. Been thinking about reacquiring the Commander Keen series (1990+) too. Hard to believe how kickass the first of those games was when I was five years old.

Thrig: Colonization was awesome. 8 bit folk music for the win.

Aeven: that spike thing reminds me of the original Prince of Persia. Punishing game, that. Never made it past level 2 (I was only a little kid at the time mind).

Holy Hell. X-Com was by far the best strategy shooter game of the ninetys before Fallout cameout. My guess is that the Halo series is based off of that game.

I think we can all agree that the teenagers rolling D&D when it first came out made the best fucking video games between '93 and '99.

I've played some old games, Serious Sam, Wolvenstein, the first Tribes game.

That was at this computer technician's house though (Who happened to be a server moderator and had a typing speed of like 120 WPM).

That was back in 2000-01 though.
