Four Greyhounds' Showcase

Post by Four Greyhounds »

Hi

I wasn't sure until after I joined exactly what I could do to help here at TR. After I joined, I realized that almost everyone (or everyone) has the PC version of the ES games and the construction set that goes along with it. I play Morrowind and Oblivion on the Xbox. I joined TR to help with quest and plot ideas, but not actually modding. I'm not quite sure where to go from here. Any suggestions?

other aspects of TR include music, sound effects, voice acting, and photoshop work.

If you're really interested in TR just get the Morrowind or Oblivion PC versions and go from there. :D TR and all the other mods on the internet, give them a big advantage over the Xbox versions.

There is also writing and quest design. If you're interested in those I suggest you read up extensively on our lore and post something in the appropriate forum.

Yeti does have a point however, The GoTY edition of Morrowind goes for like $5 now days.

Modeling, don't forget about that. You can model without actually having the game (others have to playtest though).

Anyway, I am sure the other members know more on what you do for quest design :P.

Anyway, I would try to find a cheap copy of Oblivion and Morrowind GoTY.

You can probably find OB for around $15, and MW for around $5.

ahahahaha that's me. I don't even own the game anymore! But seriously you can get a hold of Blender for free and see if you got a knack for 3d art

alright thanks. I'll try to find a cheap copy of Oblivion. One other thing: can I buy or download just the construction set, or do I need the game to make it run?

and is modeling different than modding?

Yes you can download the CS separate... I'm not sure if it runs though: I just do 3d art for TR atm and I haven't played the game in almost 2 years.

Yes modeling is different than modding. Modding includes all aspects: Sound, Art/Design, 3d art/modeling, Literature, quests, NPC design, and Interior/Exterior Construction Set work.

Modeling just refers to 3d art.

Go here for the construction set.

btw could somebody PM me and teach my noob ass how to rename the displayed name of the URL but keep the same link? I'd pay many gourds and maybe a camel.

yes, it is for making 3d models, but since I have 3dsMAX I never looked into blender. Ask LadyN for some direction or just google blender: its a freeware program so I'm sure you'll find it fast.

I'm using Blender for all of my modelling work for TR, its a great program. Takes some time to get used too but its just as good as Maya/3dsMax.

I'd recommend using a lot of tutorials, and not being a stryker. Also, try not being a me. I'd also recommend blender.

The only thing i can think to suggest is that you download and install the latest posible patch (for SI, as that comes with the GOTY edition - in Australia at least). Hopefuly that will 'clear' any minor compatability issues.

PS: If you have a joystick or any other sort of control item other than you mouse and keyboard make sure it is un-pluged whenever you play oblivion. Trust me, its important to the games playablity.

To add to the afore mentioned, (and if you haven't done so yet) : make sure that the ONLY data file you run is the Oblivion.esm.

If you still crash:

-Set your graphics settings to 800x600 and turn off all specularity, bloom/hdr, and texture filtering effects.

-Set all your draw distances to 0

-set the game to run in windowed mode (sometimes the full-screen overlay can cause problems)

-Double-check your firewall settings and make sure any instances of Bethesda Softworks are not blocked)

-If you are running a constant avg, adaware, or mcaffee virus scan full time try disabling them when you run Oblivion.

-Make sure you have fairly recent automatic updates from windows as they can cause video and sound problems when gone unchecked for too long.

-And of course email Beth at support@bethsoft.com and wait a few days for a response. They'll probably tell you to empty your temp folder and provide a DxDiag report which should be avaliable in your autorun menu somewhere in "support"

alright, finally figured out what's wrong, it is the video card. could someone please tell me how expensive they are, at least in the ballpark price?

one other thing: when I finally get Oblivion up and running, should I post a new showcase, or just post my work on this thread?

alright, i was finally able to create a (very) small cave. it's near the road behind of Bravil. i know this won't earn a promotion, even if its perfect, but i'd appreciate the criticism so that i can keep learning. also, i wasn't sure exactly the point of pathing, so i just attempted my version of pathing. this is my first mod, so don't expect anything special.

bear with me: i just went to attach my mod, but i don't know where to find the file. i went to my games/oblivion, but it wasn't there. help please! :|

It should be in the 'Oblivion/Data' folder.

I'm glad you're using this place to improve your skills, since that's what is mainly for, anyway, not a TR draft office.

i still can't seem to find it. i go to my documents/my games/oblivion, and from there i have a "saves" folder, as well as the construction set and a document called renderer info. but nothing called oblivion/data. sorry. i'm really clueless when it comes to this stuff. while i'm at it, i also couldn't find the oblivion.ini file either when i tried to pull it up with wordpad.

it shoudnt be in your My Documents folder. the default folder for oblivion's main files is Program Files/Bethesda Softworks. if its not there run a search for it, thats probably simplest.

im not sure that wordpad will recognize that it can open ini files, you probably have to double click the file itself.

noticed that you had seams between your tiles. each cave tile has 4 texture variants, they only fit together in a specific way. also noticed that it was dirty, clean it with TES4gecko or TES4Edit.

more detailed review upcoming.

each tile has a letter at the end, either A, B, C, or D. you have to play with it and figure out which letter snaps to which other letter in each direction. i believe that A snaps to B, B to C, C to D, and D to A. but im not sure. its been a while since ive worked with caves.
