This is just the standard line. Bethesda never "have current plans" until they announce anything. This is just Kotaku trading off the Elder Scrolls name.

An Elder Scrolls MMO is in the cards? Oh my...

I don't think anyone can say for sure when TES V will come out. If they've been working on it simultaneously with Fallout 3, we might see it in 1-2 years. If they started after the release of Fallout 3, we could have a 4 year wait ahead of us .
I wouldn't be surprised if Zenimax Online made a TES MMORPG. I wouldn't play it, since I don't really like multiplayer. Bunny hopping, 1337 speak, and the constant insults/flame wars drive me nuts. Plus, imagine having to play with all the "Sithis worshippers."
Anyway, hopefully the TES novels will be good . From what I've heard, the author they've hired is a good writer, so we just have to hope he knows TES lore well .

That's a very good point. Infact recent surveys indicate that only 87% of all mmo players are infact noobs(lol). Anywho back on subject I think that whichever path Bethesda goes down it's going to be (at the very least) interesting.

i for one dismiss MMOs because of some percieved stigma of them being nothing but mindless, grinding, button-mashing with no depth or intellectual activity. when i was young i had a picture block, which entertained me for hours on end without thought. i'm sure those cost a lot less than MMOs.

The one thing everyone needs to remember (mainly people who arent as well knowledge in the history) is tht TES has been going for 10+ years and its popularity has probably increased by an exopential percent, so I hardly doubt they'd just stop making the games.
(Personally I'd like to see another continent like Pyandonea, that combined with Summerset Isle could be an interesting combination. Psijic Order magic and the Maormer would be cool to play around with.)

Yeah, but they've shown with Fallout 3 that they can transfer the selling power of the brand name across to other titles. Why keep flogging the same horse when you can diversify across genres with equal (or in fact, greater) success?RelinQ wrote:The one thing everyone needs to remember (mainly people who arent as well knowledge in the history) is tht TES has been going for 10+ years and its popularity has probably increased by an exopential percent, so I hardly doubt they'd just stop making the games.

man, a shit ton of people will be hella pissed off when/if the MMO is announced, so i suggest that yall keep an open mind.
MMOs have about as much intellectually stimulating content as your average first player game. when compared to shooters or racing games they may even have more. neither are they all about grinding or button mashing (or at least it is possible for them to not be about this). it often requires some semblance of skill to figure out the best succession of skills and the best combination of gear. raids and parties also require communication and cooperation. and this is just based on MMOs on the market today. the TES style of gameplay (and background surrounding it) can transfer into a wholly new multiplayer experience if Zenimax Online does a good job.

L_N, just how do MMORPG companies police their games to keep n00bs off? How would they keep everyone from jumping from rooftop to rooftop in Balmora instead of using the streets? Or from using 1337? I just don't understand how that works without making everyone pretend to be NPCs. I can't help but imagine the Imperial City with everyone running from place to place instead of walking, and I get this horrid thought of people jumping around the city like Mexican jumping beans. I'm not asking this to be an asshole, I'm legitimately curious . With some of the people on the ES forum these days(remember, we will be seeing both the good and the Blad.), I can't imagine all those people behaving. *hugs*
Yeah, but that was a Fallout game. They're rather well-liked by one or two gamers who remember the 90s.MMMowSkwoz wrote:Yeah, but they've shown with Fallout 3 that they can transfer the selling power of the brand name across to other titles. Sniper: a lot of it is just people. in my years of online gaming (including WoW and Run Escape) i have never seen anything like this (which is what people typically think of in MMOs). there are very few people who use horrible 1337 like that nowdays. when MMO players say n00b it typically means someone who doesnt know how to play the game and hence uses inapropriate skills or asks 'stupid' questions, not someone who talks in 1337 and begs for gold. i didnt see people quite that bad in WoW, and smaller MMOs (such as TES is likely to be) are even less likely to be affected.
most MMOs have name filters. this forbids you from using non-letter characters in your names and from using naughty words. the dialog is also filtered: there is a general channel, a trade channel, a looking for party channel, etc. most people will use them appropriately and you wont see "wtb max dmg daedric katana 50k plz msg" unless you want to. you can turn of *all* the channels and play in silence.
there are also dedicated roleplay servers, which are for people who want to roleplay their characters for real. for the most part people talk in character (which i find annoying personally, but it does help immersion) and there are even fewer people who can be classified as newbs.
MMOs are built differently from a single player game (especially one like TES). cities are designed for maximum detail with minimum graphics, hence rooftops are not typically accessible. streets (on which most of the detail is centered) are often the only way to progress through a city.
really, i think that most people complaining about MMOs havent actually played one (a real one. shitty free ones are bound to be full of 10 year old fucktards). i did a stint in WoW, and even there i didnt see people jumping around like jackasses or talking in 1337 (i admit i often played with dialog off). its a different experience to be sure, and its not for everyone, but its not nearly as horrible and as depraved, mind melting, or intellectually unstimulated as people make it out to be.

That said, although I do like playing MMOs I really get something different out of it than playing a single player role-playing game. There tends to be a lot more cognitive dissonance and fourth-wall breaking in reconciling the story of the game with what you are actually doing in the game itself. One major restriction is that since there are hundreds or thousands of characters with more or less the same power level as your own, your character can't really be the hero, and any attempt to portray your character as such tends to fall flat; Being the hero of the city doesn't really mean much, if everybody who's gotten to a certain point is the hero of the same city.
Also it is extremely rare that your character can actually take part in real world-changing events, since they have to take place for everyone and are a lot more difficult to execute.
To be honest, most MMOs right now are very similar games in different clothing--be it fantasy, sci-fi, whatever--and the clothing doesn't do all that great a job of dressing up the underlying mechanics. So I'm not all that interested in a TES MMO unless they try to do something really and truly unique. But, of course, that would be one heck of a risk and I don't foresee Bethsoft taking that sort of risk anytime soon. Not that I blame them.
