Ubuntu 9.04 on HP G60 laptop, can it work?

Post by Tyrion »

As some of you may know my laptop from last year was pretty much incapable of running any game, or even the Oblivion cs for basic modding purposes. Well, that laptop is now dead, and since the reason it is dead is considered *accidental* by Sony, it can't be replaced. Now honestly, I don't really care about Sony, I wouldn't get another Vaio anyway, the things are overpriced and underpowered, but it does mean flushing $800 down the toilet.

Bummer.

Anyways, I went out looking for another laptop that had at least modest gaming capabilities. I settled on an HP G60. I upgraded the RAM, and shrugged off the poor battery life because I wouldn't be using it on the battery very often anyways. Now I've always dual booted a linux distro along with windows. Windows for gaming, linux for everything else. So I went over to Ubuntu's website, dowloaded Jaunty Jackalope, created a cd to install from, and booted it up. Installation went well, if a little bit sluggishly. When I log-in I'm greeted by an incredibly slow interface and errors with upgrading screen effects. Just scrolling through a webpage takes several minutes where it should take several seconds. The bloody thing is so slow, I decided to just abandon it entirely and work through Vista, since it was impossible to use the internet browser to look up solutions on Ubuntu. After doing some searching I've found that most people had trouble running Ubuntu on this laptop, but no problems that are like mine, so I don't really know where to start.

If anyone in the know about Ubuntu or linux can shed some light on the situation I'd be very grateful.

edit: Two more problems. These are vista related problems to Morrowind. Firstly, I can't get MGE to work. I click on the MGE icon and it just says "Morrowind Graphics Extender has stopped working" and closes. I have a sinking feeling its a vista issue, and can't be resolved. Next, I cant run Morrowind Code Patch. Which seems really odd, I've never heard of any issues with that. I can live without MGE since I only use it for the detailed shadows effect, and I can live without the code patch since I really just want the map fix. Either way, its very annoying, and I hope it can be resolved.

re-edit: After some tinkering code patch works. However still no luck with MGE.

The problem, good sir, is not Ubuntu, but Vista.

Oh, well the Morrowind issues are taken care of. I just got both to work. Haven't gotten around to trying a reinstall of Ubuntu. Why would Vista conflict with Ubuntu and cause it to run poorly?

I managed to dual boot Ubuntu with vista without a hitch. (on a HP Laptop.) But then again, I used the Wubi installer, so there was no install from cd.
If you read this, send 30 jelly babies to The Midlands, England. Ill collect them later.

I was simply referring to Vista's suckery.

Windows Vista should be able to run it in a capability mode for Windows XP or 2000 if my memory suits me, and also that is just the VISTA VIRUS!
I love how everyone ignores me!
