[SOLVED] MGE whadup? D:
Mmkay so I haven't had time to do much lately, but I just did a clean install of Morrowind on my new PC! (well old PC but upgraded)
It's Windows 7 Ultimate with 2GB ram (DDR) AMD Athlon 3200+ Clawhammer 2GHZ and a brand new-ish ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB.
I did clean installs of MGE and Morrowind (no worries I have all my TR work backed up)
However I can't get MGE to work! Here is the error log. The program starts fine, got the latest DirectX 9 files (to avoid the missing dll errors).
But upon startup, it gets past the bethesda video then minimizes. I get all these errors.
Error opening file Shaders\TexCoord_4_Offset_A.vso
Error opening file Shaders\TexCoord_4_Offset_A.vso
Error opening file Shaders\WC_TexCoordGen.vso
Error opening file Shaders\FauxEMBM_Displace_2.pso
Unable to load pixelshader file: FauxEMBM_Displace_2.pso
Error opening file Shaders\FauxEMBM_Displace.vso
Unable to load vertexshader file: FauxEMBM_Displace.vso
Error opening file Shaders\TexCoord_4_Offset_A.vso
I can continue to load up to the menu, then all of a sudden it tells me MGE is not configured (when it is).
Then finally it crashes utterly.
Does anyone know a fix for this? I have the latest drivers installed.

Hmm, not sure. I run Windows 7 too, but haven't installed MGE yet. Morrowind's directory is in the Program Files (x86) directory, right? Are you running 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 7?

Yeah I'm running 32 bit Windows 7. Clean install, clean everything. Tried it with the ATI WDDM 1.1 drivers (the ones automatically installed), then I rolled back and installed the ATI drivers. Neither worked.
Yes it's in the Program files directory.
It worked fine on XP (with my old Radeon X1650 and even my integrated GeForce 6100 before that!)
In Vista, it wouldn't even start. Now it does, it just crashes.

Well, with Vista I think there was a patch you had to run. I am installing it now, but may not be able to help assist you since I'm running 64-bit Windows. Try over at the ESF, in the official MGE thread.

In Vista and 7, any program running from program files needs admin access to change files and settings in its directory. You'll need to either run it as admin, or install it to somewhere else (I use C:\Games, the user folder works just as well)
It's Microsoft's attempt to improve system security, but old programs aren't built to cope with this, so it causes problems.

Like MGEgui.exe actually runs, I configure it. In 7 I actually got further than Vista.
It's just Morrowind says those shaders can't be loaded, then crashes. I have full administrative rights (i think), and actually the game is installed on a different partition than my actual system installation.
I'll try your suggestion though.
Have you had any problems?

You might have to download directx 9, as well. I remmeber mge not working for me the first time I tried it on windows 7, and fixing it by installing directx 9. I think 7 comes with only directx 10, which isn't fully compatible with previous versions.
You could always try that, perhaps?

I don't run Windows 7, still XP, however the first time I tried to install MGE it corrupted my Morrowind installation (and I had, as always, the latest DirectX 9.0c). I had to reinstall the game from scratch, so I gave up with this MGE thingy.

You know what's also popular? Enormous flying cities and ridable dragons. Maybe TR should invest in navigable ships and underwater cities.

I did get dX9.
Windows 7 comes with actually DX 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11 dll files, but not the DX9.0c files needed by MGE. I already updated to include the missing DX9 files MGE needed.
Do you think perhaps it's my graphics drivers?

I think it may be what Cathartis was saying about admin rights, you may be the admin of your computer but you need to set the program to be able to run as/by admin with admin privileges.
You should get the option on the proprties page for the main MGEgui file to set it to run with admin rights, cant remember the exact phraseing now cos im in XP (things work in XP ) but i had MGEgui installed in vista at one pointand had similar problems, and im sure that fixed it for me
May be worth a go

That didn't work :S
I don't think that's even the problem, seeing as I have it installed on a completely different partition, not C:\ (The directory is called Program files just for consistency, but is on the volume F:\)
Anyways I managed to play Morrowind by pressing ESC when the first dialog came and it loaded the game fine. I ran it on increased resolution, and the antialiazing and textures seemed to improve.
But the water was COMPLETELY gone. (I read about the issue on the troubleshooting wiki but it's caused by something else). As well, I don't think I got any improvement in view distance, and the FPS is still choppy at places like Ebonheart (god knows about Firewatch or...Necrom!)
I'm worried about it being my GPU, but it's brand-spankin' new Radeon HD 4650.

465W. I don't have much hardware eating it up, just 2 CD/DVD RW combo drives, a fairly outdated CPU, a floppy (yes I know old haha), a USB floppy, cardreader, and my SATA Western Digital 500GB 7200rpm.Haplo wrote:What wattage is your PSU running?

Yes. 500W at least, but that wouldn't really be worth the upgrade; if you can afford a 650, that should do you perfectly, although a 600 would be fine as well. You can't run a Radeon HD 4650 and all that other stuff safely on less than 500W.Swiftoak Woodwarrior wrote:brand-spankin' new Radeon HD 4650.

I kinda agree, but I'm still not sure it's the PSU causing problems. Unless it was caused by physical hardware failure, which I doubt. Again I'm not running any crazy hardware like dual or quad cores. Just the bare basics + GPU.
I had the same issues with my old X1650 Pro with Vista (actually in Vista MGE wouldn't run at all...)
If it was my PSU, I would think that other stuff would start failing, but I've felt no excess heat from the PSU, no crashes, nothing else. The box said 400W recommended.
I benchmarked Oblivion (a game I don't play very often), and I maxed everything with HDR and got a solid 30fps on 1280x1024. Morrowind without MGE runs even more smoothly.
I did notice though that Windows 7 stubbornly wants to install it's own drivers for the GPU. The first time I installed it it was a Radeon HD 4650 WDDM 1.1, and now it keeps updating to a radeon 4600 series, which I don't even have (i rolled it back). I install the manufacturer drivers, same thing (i rolled it back again). Perhaps that might be it, but i doubt it seeing as if it's a bad driver, everything else would f**k up. The WDDM drivers seem to be doing great.
This issue seems to be isolated to just MGE and Morrowind, which completely puzzles me.
le sigh lol.
Should I post some dxdiag info? Will that help?

Apologies for the double post, but I managed to get the sucker working perfectly after a full cleanup. Apparently there was some driver corruption in the registry that made Morrowind think I was running on a 4600 rather than a 4650. I had to clean it up. Probably the strangest error I've ever had.
You can close this thread/delete/whatever now. Thanks for all the help
(Note to Windows 7 users, don't go touching your gpu drivers, the WDDM seems to do a nice job at installing the right ones automatically.)
