mGen GIF and JPG file type question

Post by Monkey »

Hey people, just having a play around with mGen, (that's mGen not MGE :) )

And basically im wanting to import either GIF, JPG or PNG files into mGe to use height maps ive created in 3ds max

And i was wondering if anyone knew exactly how the file should be saved.

For example, a gif file, should it be greyscale, indexed RGB or what, how many colours, that sort of thing

If anyone has any ideas it would be really appreciated

I know it's not what you've asked for.. but there is also a tool named tesanwynn. Link

With Tesannwynn you can define exact scales and proportions after which the heightmap-pixels are translated into Landscape. You can also cover areas with textures. Following my experience Tesannwynn is more reliably for creating large maps where mgen would crash.

An advantage of mgen, however, is that you can randomly spread statics over the landscape.

Regarding heightmap-imagefiles. Tesannwynn can take 8-bit Greyscale-BMP's and a few other formats.

Well that sounds like a much better option. I'll have a gander and see what i can make up

Cheers for the pointer mate :)

EDIT: That is a wicked program, works really well, only problem is, i have one map ive already exported from a .ter file using mGen, and when i import a BMP version of the same image using TESAnnwyn its alot flatter and just bumpier, as in, the first .ter file i used has a large slope upto the top of a mountain ridge, whereas TESAnnwyn doesn't seem to pick it up...

Still cool as though, would be very handy to be able to import a gif version of my first image into mGen, for simplicity :P

EDIT: Just had a crazy thought, i might try and rescale oblivion so its as big as its supposed to be, then import it into morrowind, ha ha
