Problem in Port Telvannis

Post by HereticDante »

Hi,
I'm have a slight problem with Port Telvannis. Whenever i go into town theres a noticeable drop in framerate. It drops to about 30-35ish on the west side of the city near the avenue, but in the middle of town it drops to about 13-18. I've tried turning off shadows and reducing view distance but it didn't do anything. I haven't had this problem anywhere else in game on any TR maps or in the official game. I've tried the FPS Optimizer too but it didn't work either. I really wanna start on the Mainland House Telvanni quests but this fps drop drives me crazy everytime i enter Port Telvannis.
My graphics card is an ASUS EAH4830 by ATI if that helps. The computer was built late 2008 so i don't think it's a hardware problem. Please if someone could help me i'd really appreciate it.

okay well the card isnt too bad so I doubt it is your hardware.

I would suggest the following:

Lower your resoulution on your screen if possible, then try up the frame rate. that video card works better at a lower resoultion from what Ive read.

Lower your in-game resoultion
Lower the draw distance (fog distance?) in-game as well.
Lower the NPC (AI) Distance in game as well.

And obviously try not to run anything else while running Morrowind, other applications using your RAM never help.

In general The mainland can be a bit laggy at times, but then again Im using a 64mb video card and a 8yo computer so thats expected from me. Mind you that the Morrowind only requires a minimum of a 32mb video card.

If that doesnt help, then you might have a hardware problem.

Well, it drops for me to (but my laptop is maybe 2 months old, and was released 3-4 months ago so from 100+ drops to 60-70). It's HP 4515s.

Maybe it's because outside towns you only have ground, several creatures, not much in general, but in own you have more detailed models (arhitecture, lot of NPCs etc.) so that slows your computer down. But I'm not too sure, could be it, but it could be something else.....

I run a relatively *hot* desktop machine (Athlon dual core, nvidia 256 meg video, 4 gig ram) and never see more than 30 fps. In some towns I drop as low as 12 fps without any serious jumpiness or jerkiness. Broadcast TV only runs at 30 fps so anything above that is gravy. :) I have no problem playing unless the fps drops below 10 or so. Having said that, my older laptop used to drive me crazy because of the hard drive not being able to keep up. Morrowind is constantly loading files from the hard drive so disk access speed can really slow things down. Try defragging your hard drive. It may help considerably. Also make sure you don't have unnecessary programs running in the background. They can cause problems too.

On my laptops, no matter how good graphic cards and memory they had, I could only run Bethesda games in a window mode and then I could use highest settings without any lag. Try that one.
