Easy Fix for Vista Screenshot and Beta Comment Problem!!!

Post by zhukant »

This is extremely simple!!! No need to reinstall Morrowind or move it out of the Program files directory or ANYTHING!

The problem is that there are TWO Morrowind.ini files if you've installed the game on a Vista computer. TWO of them.

Why? Because you CANNOT EDIT anything in the Program Files folder without giving it Administrator Permission to do so.
A program such as Morrowind DOES NOT ever have Administrator Privileges to edit its own files in Program Files.

THEREFORE, Vista creates a SEPARATE folder where it stores all the files that will be changed by the program.

THIS INCLUDES ANOTHER COPY OF MORROWIND.INI AS WELL AS YOUR SAVED GAMES FOLDER!!!

To view it, go into your Program Files>Bethesda Softworks>Morrowind directory in the explorer program (the one you use to look at folders and files). Look at the top, under the bar that displays the directory filepath, there should be a LARGE BLUE BAR that gives you options and such. If you are in the Morrowing folder in Program Files>Bethesda Softworks, there should be an option in that big blue bar that says COMPATIBILITY FILES.

CLICK THIS BUTTON.

Your view will suddenly change, because the explorer will take you far, far away from the Program Files folder in your C:\ ROOT directory, to ANOTHER PROGRAM FILES FOLDER located all the way in C:\Users land in C:\Users\(Your Username)\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Morrowind

THIS IS WHERE VISTA SENDS THE COMPUTER GAME YOU ARE RUNNING TO MESS WITH FILES!!

In this folder, you will see all the different files that can be messed with by the game. Here you will find a copy of Morrowind.ini and a folder with all your saves!!!

TO ENABLE SCREENSHOTS: Edit THIS copy of Morrowind.ini in notepad. From there, follow this FAQ link: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Hints#Taking_Screenshots

TO ENABLE BETA COMMENTS: Edit THIS copy of Morrowind.ini in notepad. From there, follow this post: http://www.tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewtopic.php?t=21125

Your enthusiasm for Vista workarounds is admirable.

Only because I've been trying to figure out how to fix it, and when moving the entire game out of the Program Files opened a whole new huge can of worms that I'd have to patch back together, this was like a miracle. =]

I'm glad you posted it, though. I was just making fun of your use of caps. :p

Ohh hahah no you're right―I was super excited about this because this is the first time I've ever figured something out that I couldn't find having already been solved somewhere else on the internet. I don't consider myself a computer whiz by any standard so this is kind of amazing to me XD
