New Forum Skin

Post by Adanorcil »

So unless you're completely blind, you've noticed by now that these forums have a new skin.

(If, at this point, you are beginning to wonder whether you are, in fact, completely blind, you may want to do a hard refresh of this page [F5 on Windows].)

The first and foremost goal of this thread is to alert you to the fact that this skin is not entirely finished yet. It was designed to go along with the new website that will be set up very soon, but still has a few minor flaws that need to be ironed out. Once the website proper is running, I will return to the forum skin.

In the meantime, feel free to signal any shortcomings in this thread. Quite a few things (mismatched font sizes, readability, etc.) are probably already on the list to be taken care of soon. By far most of the problems, glitches or flaws that you will encounter are probably due to the fact that this forum is hilarious difficult to skin consistently and in some places appears to operate on sheer magic, but we'll see what can be done.

Awesome work thus far, Adan!

The claims browser needs some updating to be legible with the new background. It needs a post-like box so the text doesn't mix into the background. That, and the tables it uses are a bit weird with their borders. (And consider adding the transparency effect to their status boxes)

From IRC:

thin vertical bar/line between user avatars/locations and their posts would be nice

Also a new the link text; it's brown now, and thus very hard to see (especially toward the bottom of the background image.

This is already a big improvement, in my humble (or not so humble) opinion.

Looks very good and fresh. And the Deshaan concept is great as background image.

Hopefully the new website will finally have beautiful up-to-date screenshots in the gallery. :)

The old site has been burned too deeply into my retinas, so it's still the only thing I can see (and not just on the TR forum either, even Reddit looks like it)

Man, I love this new look. So hawt. Can't wait to see the new image gallery.

Just thought I'd say that the forum is looking fantastic already, I can't wait to see how the site itself turns out!

Also: New avatar for the first time in ages! :3

We need to bump the font sizes all down a notch; I just re-opened my web browser and visited the forums and had to ctrl+ScrollWheel down a notch to get everything back to a decent size. Right now the font is rather large, which increases the scrolling required unnecessarily.

EDIT:
Before
After

Also, regarding link colors... maybe white?

EDITEDIT:
The forum attachment font size, however, was made waaay too small. Its size should be upped by two or three increments, at least.

Additionally (and separately), the spacing and alignment for the buttons, etc. for claims threads will need to be re-done.

EDITEDITEDIT:
The "new post" coloring for the latest ten posts down at the bottom of the board needs updating to the new scheme as well. Posts marked as "unread" in there are still the old brown and tan colors.

The header has been removed and the buttons up top have been rearranged a bit. I will soon continue making everything a bit neater adding a logo or some such to the header.

I know and trust me, I've looked all over the place to find where that color is being set. It appears to be insert straight into the HTML out of absolutely nowhere. Do you know of any sort of template settings/scripts that might contain it?

I think it's an added phpbb mod so I'd look in the /forum/ directory in the .php files.

---

Can we not capitalize the toplinks on the website? As they're ordered and in a neat line, it looks a little unprofessional having them in lowercase.

It would also be nice to have an FAQ toplink, rather than just mentioning it contextually in the contents of a page.

Further, the Claims Browser control panel functionality needs to be restored (updating the map overlays, etc). The various links redirect to /?p=forum/ URLs which obviously is out of date now (this content may be something you can't see, I forget exactly what GMs can see). This actually brings up an important point: we are now entirely missing a modding data section (tutorials/utilities/TR production maps), so that's something important that needs adding back.

Instead of the 'view posts since last visit' could we have 'view new posts' and 'view unread posts' buttons instead?

At the moment if I only have five minutes to check the forums there could be twenty unread posts, which means the next time I check I have to manually find the topics updated in the last day or whatever. If that makes sense?

Haplo, try and keep things relating to the website in a thread relating to the website. Will make it easier to keep track of. ;)

I'm afraid not. What you're seeing here is purely a visual change. Nothing of the forum's functionality has been changed, which would be too much hassle right now.

A few update messages:

- All little cosmetic things such as mentioned in this thread will be handled shortly.
- I will fix up a header again shortly. (I know there's currently no big ol' button to get back to the main page.) This is proving a bit harder than expected, because the original template proved so unwieldy that I am going to have to rebuild it somewhat.

This would be so much easier if changing one thing didn't change it in a bunch of inconsistent and unpredictable places too... :p

There doesn't seem to be a way to get from the forum sections (Mod Planing, Asset Development, etc.) back to the root of the forum. Everything else has that "Tamriel Rebuilt Forums > Internal Discussion >" stuff right below the header buttons, but those sections don't.

Will the new narrow style stay? Because I don't like it. It squashes everything up into a thin column in the middle of the screen.

Also, the Profile and Claims Browser Overview links at the top are in front of the Tamriel Rebuilt link. And the Log out button stretches further than the edge of the bar onto the background.

Do you happen to have a rather small screen resolution? Barring a little padding the proportions of the forum have remained the same (largely because they're a pain to edit). I'll see if I can make it a little more fluid.

EDIT: There should now be a fixed minimum width of 1000 pixels on the main forum container.

Will also try and avoid this on smaller resolutions.

The screen I'm using at the moment is 1280x1024.

It's better, but now Claims Browser Overview sticks over the edge.

The background pic seems to have disappeared entirely on the ipad, and everything is off to the left rather than the middle.

Everything seems fine for me, tried a hard refresh too. Not sure why it's been mucking up in TDF or Lady N's cases. Especially TDF, I basically narrowed my browser window to like a very narrow thing, and I still could not replicate TDF's width issues. I have to assume it's not playing nice with other browsers/OSes? Maybe some information/testing would be helpful for troubleshooting.

On my android tablet it looks the same as on Lady M's iPad. I'm guessing that in order to stop the Claims Browser Overview button going off the edge of the screen it pushes everything to the left.

On my desktop my browser is Chrome. The width is better now that you made the change.
