The Formalities of Love

By Draler Ilvi

Dear Indoril, it goes without saying that love is a necessity. Love is a law determined, not ordained. It is the marriage of two souls through the indelible workings of cause and effect. It is necessary.

Did not Sotha Sil attempt to describe the mathematical formula of infatuation? Through regression the clockwork mystic denoted the covariates of passion. Derivative functions were later refined into the socioritualistic guidelines we know today.

The first formality of love is the meeting. Due to the inexperience of youth it is best to have an elder arrange the date, time and garden of encounter. During this encounter the potential partners may assess each others social status and goodness of fit.

The second formality of love is the game. Both parties express nonverbal sentiments of attraction while verbally denying interest or discussing unrelated topics. The first party to give in and explicitly communicate interest is sentenced to occupying the submissive role in the relationship.

The third formality of love is the dance. Once the roles of both parties have been established the dance of love may commence. For specifics consult tomes such as the Canon of Copulation and the Thirty Six Positions of Varen.

The fourth formality of love is the marriage. This is the registration of love within the legal canon. The necessity of the connection is proven and is added to the existing Orthodoxy.

As was stated from the start: love is a law determined, not ordained. Foreigners may use the term 'fate', but a single word cannot express the sophisticated philosophical underpinnings of our customs. The workings of love are a logical necessity following from the divinity of our Triunes. I will end with the words of the Warrior Poet (from the Fourth).

"Vivec knew that to retain his divinity that he must make a strong argument against luck. Further examination shows it is the utter power of the sheer number of coincidences that leads one to the idea that synchronicity is guided by something more than chance."

Let me just say that it's great to see this idea of Indoril formalities being turned into a book series, IP. Like your last one, there is some great stuff here.

Love the names of the tomes you came up with. :P I suppose the placement of this formality means the Indoril don't share the objection towards premarital sex that many real-world orthodox religions have.

This seems alright. The fourth paragraph (nonverbal sentiments etc) sounds a bit robotic. The Indoril may be an odd bunch but they're not lacking a sense of the poetic.

Maybe something about children would be appropriate here?
