Post by Gnomey »

Title: How to Contribute to Tamriel Rebuilt

Welcome, new and returning members! This sticky thread has a list of the types of help Tamriel Rebuilt needs and how to go about helping us. A lot of the links are to outdated or unfinished posts; we are working on updating them, but for the time being outdated and incomplete information is better than nothing.

Tamriel Rebuilt is looking for contributions in the categories listed below. Most do not require you to go through the showcase process to contribute, and contributors are encouraged to try their hand at multiple categories. If you're new to modding, try the [url=http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewtopic.php?t=24574][OUTDATED] tutorials[/url] for help. If none of the listed activities look like something you can do, don’t worry; Tamriel Rebuilt is always looking for feedback and ideas from the general community.

Once you know what you want to do, check out the [url=http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewtopic.php?t=24999][UNFINISHED] Where to Start[/url] thread to see what we're working on right now and need help with. Also check out the second post in this sticky, where you can learn about how copyright affects you.

You'll find a list of leads you can contact and other general information about Tamriel Rebuilt in this thread: [url=http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewtopic.php?t=25013][UNFINISHED] About Tamriel Rebuilt[/url]

Happy Modding!

Asset Creation

Asset creation is where the game assets are thought up and made. Asset creation does not require a showcase; instead, anyone can contribute. Before you start, please read the required stickies, as linked in the descriptions below. Contributors to asset creation are promoted to Developer once they have made significant and quality contributions.

Concept Artist
Concept artists make artwork to illustrate new ideas. This includes atmospheric pictures, maps, pictures of potential new plants and animals, pictures of pants, houses, wheels, you name it. If it's a new idea, particularly a new asset, concept artists draw it. To start, head over to the [url=http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewforum.php?f=149]Concept Art[/url] forum, read the [url=http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewtopic.php?t=15316][OUTDATED] Concept Art Guidelines[/url], and start drawing.

Modeler
Modelers make and edit models for Tamriel Rebuilt, based off of concept art. Everything you see in Morrowind, from pants to trees to houses, was made by a modeler. Modelers also prepare the model to be animated and textured. To start, head over to the [url=http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewforum.php?f=131]Asset Development[/url] forum and read the [url=http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewtopic.php?t=18224][OUTDATED] Model Guidelines[/url].

Animator
Animators make animations for models and fix up existing animations. They are essential for any model that moves or changes. To start, head over to the [url=http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewforum.php?f=131]Asset Development[/url] forum and read the [url=http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewtopic.php?t=18224][OUTDATED] Model Guidelines[/url].

Texturer
Texturers create images that are applied onto the surface of models like a skin, to give the models their final in-game appearance. Texturers are called upon to edit old textures and make new ones for new models. To start, head over to the [url=http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewforum.php?f=131]Asset Development[/url] forum and read the [url=http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewtopic.php?t=18224][OUTDATED] Texture Guidelines[/url].

Sound Artist
Sound artists create music, in-game sound effects, ambient sounds and voice files. To start, head over to the [url=http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewforum.php?f=195]Sounds[/url] forum and read the [url=http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewtopic.php?t=16193][OUTDATED] Audio Guidelines[/url].

Construction

Construction is what most people think of when they think of modding: putting things together in the construction set. This is where we make the environment and cities players actually play in. Promotion to developer requires creation and approval of a [url=http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewtopic.php?t=18224][OUTDATED] showcase[/url].

Exteriors
Exterior modders make the outside environment that players interact with. This includes wilderness, mountains, seas, and the exterior cells of towns and cities. A showcase is required for promotion to developer status. To start, head to the [url=http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewforum.php?f=203]Developer Showcase[/url] forum and read the [url=http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewtopic.php?t=18224][OUTDATED] Showcase Guidelines[/url].

Interiors
Interior modders make the insides of houses, caves, and all other interior cells.

Scripter
Scripters plan and write scripts for quests, activators, and anything else. Scripters do not require a showcase, but should PM [url=http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=13809]seneca37[/url] instead.

Quester
Questers implement quests in the Construction Set once the quests have been fully planned and written.

Story Implementation

Story implementation includes things like writing quests, creating new lore, and writing books and dialogue. Contributors to story implementation are promoted to Developer once they have made significant and quality contributions.

Writer
Writers write quests and dialogue for use in the game. To start, head over to [url=http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewforum.php?f=114]Quests and Dialogue[/url] and read the [url=http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewtopic.php?t=15500][OUTDATED] Writing Guidelines[/url].

Author
Authors write the in-game literature, such as books, notes, and scrolls. To start, head over to [url=http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewforum.php?f=136]Literature[/url], read the [url=http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewtopic.php?t=15500][OUTDATED] Guidelines[/url], and create a thread with a short summary of a book, your reason why you think it would exist in Morrowind, and the text itself. Considering checking our list of [url=http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewtopic.php?t=23844][OUTDATED] wanted books[/url].

Administration

Administration is a catch-all term for project organization. This includes website and forum maintenance, organizing and summarizing meetings, and quality control. Contributors to administration are promoted to Developer once they have made significant and quality contributions, with the exception of reviewers, who must submit a reviewer application.

Organizer
Organizers help keep the site and project running, up-to-date and efficient. This includes proposing updates to outdated stickies, helping us in communications with other projects and the broader community, and the other assorted administrative work that goes with any large project. A good way to start is to head over to [url=http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewforum.php?f=232]Project Organization[/url], look at what sort of things are being discussed there and join in the discussions.

Tester
Testers check out content, both new and old, by examining it in the Construction Set and then playing it in-game under a variety of circumstances. Testing is something everyone can do. If you notice a bug or problem, [url=http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewtopic.php?t=25014][UNFINISHED] post it here[/url].

Reviewer
Reviewers do formal reviews on showcases and claims, making sure they are up to the standards of Tamriel Rebuilt so that members can be promoted and the claims can be marked as finished respectively. To become a reviewer, you must you must [url=http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewtopic.php?t=18034][OUTDATED] submit an application[/url].

How would this thread be related to this one: http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewtopic.php?t=24999 ie, the "where do I start" thread?

I see this thread as a place where people who are interested in contributing to TR in any way would go, and the [url=http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewtopic.php?t=25013]About TR[/url] thread would be a place for anyone to read general information about the project and it's status (TR 101).

They are both related to the 'Where do I start' thread which in my eyes would be a compilation of both, but having two separate threads would be clearer imo.

Right, thanks for reminding me. About TR contains general information about the project itself. How to Contribute to Tamriel Rebuilt informs people as to what sort of skill-sets the Project could use and some information on how to develop those skill-sets. Your sticky should, I think, then inform people very concretely about what work has already been done on the project, what work still needs to be done, and what sort of work is required for which aspect of the project. Its basic role would be to familiarize new members with our progress. I think your sticky should be linked by the other two.

So the general flow would be:

1) Go to About TR and learn about the general project.
2) Go to How to Contribute and learn about the types of help TR needs
3) Go to Where to Start and learn specifically what parts of the project need what things.

Tamriel Rebuilt is looking for modders in the categories listed below. For a few, you will be required to [url=http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewtopic.php?t=18224][OUTDATED] set up a showcase[/url] before you can officially contribute; for most, though, you can simply pitch in. Most modders around here wear multiple hats, so feel free to work in multiple categories. If you're new to modding, try the [url=http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewtopic.php?t=24574][OUTDATED] tutorials[/url] for help. This is a solid start. Interior developers, Exterior developers, questers (not writers) and reviewers are the only ones that would need to go through the traditional showcase process, as far as I'm concerned. Others are naturally still encouraged to create their own showcase threads to show their work and such.
It would be good if we managed to get a decent entry for animation in the modeller section, but I suppose there's no hurry on that.
Ideally the reviewer application thread would be incorporated into the spoiler text; I'd have a short description of each category before the spoiler and then what to do to get promoted (not sure how specific the guidelines should be, or if they should link to external guidelines) in the spoiler.

You've got the general flow going there.

I suggest we up the font size in spoilers for the sake of readability.

BBcode as shown below can be used to change font size:

Code: Select all

[size=X] text here [/size]
I suggest using size 13 for stickies.

[spoiler]klep just spilled 13 drops of tea[/spoiler]

This could also be used as headers/titles in larger stickies like these.

Kaziem and I have made several changes to her draft above. Some of the wording is still rough around the edges and will be further edited.
While the [UNFINISHED] and [OUTDATED] tags for the links are very ugly, I think the sooner this up-to-date sticky can be posted the better, and that we shouldn't wait on all of the guidelines before posting it. As long as the updated guidelines are not available, however, I think the old guidelines are better than nothing, but it should be made clear that they are outdated. This is not the tidiest approach, but it's not really much worse than the mess new members have had to navigate before now, and things should only get better from here on out.

As far as specific guidelines are concerned, I see three options:
1. put them all in a second post below the first, in spoilers. My main quibble with this solution, aside from that the spoilers look clunky, is that [url=http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewtopic.php?t=25010]our note on copyright[/url] is already planned to go in the How to Contribute to Tamriel Rebuilt sticky and the sticky might get too cluttered. Otherwise this might have been the approach I like best.
2. put them all in a minor sticky in Dev Showcase, which will naturally be heavily linked through this sticky and likely others. I think this is the approach I like best in the end. More specifically, I'd consider a guidelines and tutorials thread, with guidelines in the first post and tutorials linked or in spoilers in the second.
3. place them in their designated areas; concept art guidelines in concept art, etc. This is my least favourite approach.

I've updated the first post with Kaziem's posts and a few further changes here and there. I personally consider this done, or at least in a complete enough state to be posted in the correct location. (We can always discuss and make further changes later as necessary). Feedback is welcome.
