Um, I'm not a game techie, so forgive me if this post seems naive....
First, I notice that the bird's-eye view of Narsis shows a comparatively large city in the Morrowind universe (albeit small from a Daggerfall player's perspective). But it also seems very concentrated. Since it is a capital city, why not spread it out over several cells so that there isn't as much going on in one cell. You could have wide tree-lined boulevards, parks, different neighborhoods (upper class, middle class, lower class, paupers; or by faction/house). A large indoor market could take up an entire exterior cell (like a canton in Vivec). If I understand this thread discussion correctly, a city could actually be a sprawling metropolis of unlimited size, so long as each exterior cell has a limited number of stuff in it. What say you?

Eh, an opulent garden really isn't that out of character for Hlaalu. But the name does need to be changed. The gardens aren't even hanging or anything. And 'hanging gardens' and a 'forbidden island' don't seem very Dunmerish. Maybe just call it the 'Palace Gardens' or 'Hlaalu High Gardens' or something of that nature. If something doesn't fit with lore why bother doing more work than we have to to fix it?

The Morrowind FPS optimizer does do wonders for Narsis, using it I don't get vertigo walking around, but we still definitely need to reduce the polygon count a fair bit. There's a number of things you can do without even changing the city too much. Firstly, the planters are much more crowded than they need to be, so if we thinned those out, that would help a bit - that goes for the giant fountain in the gardens too, it is a bit too cluttered. There also seems to be an excessive number of repeated statues in parts (like lining the river) so if every other one was taken out, it wouldn't hurt the place too much. Thirdly, there are some exteriors that should really be converted to interiors. The arena and the bathhouse come to mind.

Not sure if that all would be enough, hbut it would be a start.

Would Bethesda have made a city that you need the FPS Optimizer to run? I think not. Narsis needs to be able to run at Balmora speed or better without the FPS Optimizer (or any other outside addons) for it to be acceptable in TR.

That's why I was suggesting seeing what we could do to thin things out.

Actually there really are a lot of superfluous polygons in Narsis-

In the most dense cell this wall of plantlife is a fifth of the polygons in the cell:

There's also a custom dome that is ridiculously high polygon. Like 28k.

Taking those out would reduce the cell's face count by 85000.

There might be other things there too that could be done.

I would like to beg and plea to be in charge of reducing the face count of Narsis, or at least be able to work on reducing the lag a LOT...effective immediately? *cannot express how MUCH he wants to do this*

I am in fact quite skilled at this. I plan on taking out things that no one will miss, or even notice, yet that still reduce the poly count massively...

also, the statues...there are WAYYYYYYYYY too many statues... we should leave every 3rd or 4th one, and take the rest out. (applies only to where statues are lined in freakish amounts)

its only available in the narsis download. To get it you need to download the latest version of narsis and then find it in the editor.

Just to test things, i went through Narsis and deleted all the excess plantlife, statues, replaceable custom meshes with way too many polygons, etc, and tossed in some generic npcs (about 10 total npcs per cell), then went through it to check fps.

With max view distance I was getting 6-10 fps, with it minimum, 10-16.

The biggest framerate drag was the giant fountain thingie at the entrance. Though the statuary scene in a fountain idea is cool, it hurts a bit too much. Maybe the scene can be moved somewhere else where the framerate won't die so much and the fountain can stay.

My laptop's system specs:
Intel 1.29 GHz processor
512 megs RAM
Mobility Radeon 9200 graphics card

(As a reference I was getting 14-18 fps in downtown Balmora)

I think in Prom's memory. A high-detail version of narsis as bolt-on should be in place ;)

prom originally designed two cities: one for high end comps and one for low ends.

But he wanted the low-end one to be the bolt-on. I think the playable version should be included in TR, and the high detailed version should be a bolt-on.

I took a look at the models, I think something went wrong during the exportation, it's still saveable, we should get teli to do reduce the polycount on em :P

From what I can tell, if we did the culling I mentioned above (which really doesn't make the place look that much worse) and then either made that giant fountain thingamajig into an interior plaza instead of an exterior resource hog, Narsis's framerate would not be unreasonable - only slightly worse than Balmora.

to come back to narsis, i just read the thread and i have to say it's amazing. just downloaded it and tomorrow i gonna take a look at it. i think the problem is - without being offensive - that you guys are too deep into it. i am so far a neutral morrowindplayer waiting to get another expansion pack.
i just gonna "walk" through it and tell you guys what i like and what i don't like. visual effects, the appearance of the city,etc..
because everybody knows that there is love at first sight, at least sometimes.

but the thing with the hanging gardens. first thing is that it sounds familiar to me, i just can't remember if or where i heard it. if it's mentioned before i will try to find it and tell you guys. if it's not, then i think it's a great idea to bring this new part in the game. i would imagine a huge interior with an amazing garden, which should have a religious meaning and it should be involved in the city's history. So you have a point to start making the story for the city. also you could involve the hanging gardens in the storyline somehow. with all i saw now and all i still imagine about the city, i try to come up with several conceptarts. if somebody could give me all information about everything that has to be there, like which one of the great houses has the council there, or which story realated things/places/characters(including which meaning these NPC's have), then i could come up with something about 2 weeks later. there are already too many things popping up in my mind, but i don,t wanna tell anything wrong now, because i have no information about things belonging to narsis.

i hope i can help, also i hope you could offer some help.

If you've heard of it before outside of the game it might have been in a history book because there was the Hanging Gardens of Babylon that Nebuchadnezzar built for his homesick wife in (605-562 B.C.) and it also was one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world.(is'nt history fun) holy crap I sound like my freakin' history teacher.

First of all, go into your morrowind.ini file and enter AllowYesToAll=1 directly below the top line [General].

(This will give you a yes to all option when the error dialogs come up).

Secondly, it sounds like you are extracting the files incorrectly.

Go into winrar and extract the TR file to a new folder on your desktop, making sure the "Use Folder Names" option is ticked in the dialog box.

Extract.

Now go into the new folder - it should be named 'Data Files' or it may be a number of folders together: Meshes, Textures, Icons etc.

If it is Data Files, cut then paste the folder into your MORROWIND directory.
OR;
If it is the latter, select all of them, cut, then paste into your DATA FILES folder.

Please read this carefully, or you may have a high chance of ballsing up your installation.

Good luck

Well, considering his name, it is only fitting that Prometheus made the city huge. 8)
